Well as the title states finally getting back into the Automotive trade after a 8 year hiatus.

I am a red seal Journeyman, Had a interview went really great but now comes the part of pay and I'm not to sure about what to ask for. Searching around looks like the going rate for a Journeyman is about $45 a hour but wanted a direct opinion from a 4th year or Journeyman tech about how much is the going rate these days.

If it helps I specialize in transmission diagnosis and repair.

Indy shop or dealer ? import or domestic ? wide ranges depending on where. I assume domestic since your a trans guy, I would say your in the right range. If you looking to get a job at a import dealer its much less.

Tranny man is in demand in most domestic dealerships.
better get ready to bend over, lack of pay, as its flat rate and lots of powertrain warranty. Warranty times dropping
each year.... hmm lots of tech wants out of the trade and
you want to jump back in...... good luck

Going rate is 25-40$/hr

Flat rate and type of work come into play heavily.

A tech can easily make more @ 25$/hr flat than a 40$ tech on straight time.

A trans specialist with current training in Calgary will make about 35$/hr I imagine.

It's a independent shop, they deal with mostly domestic and do get into European and Japanese.

I considered dealer also but just as a couple guys mentioned to me that flat rate isn't that great most of the time.

To start off with we agreed on $30 to start and advance fairly quickly to $45 within a 3 month period as I get my skills up to par. Most likely getting into a management role after a couple months.

Thanks for the input guys, helped put things in perspective for me.
