Hey guys, looking to pick up a decent camera for travel and I am lost. I basically know nothing about photography but want an upgrade over my Cannon powershot from 2008 (lol).

Can anyone provide a recommendation based on:

$500 give or take
New or Used
Somewhat compact for travel (no DSLR)

I was looking at Sony RX100. There is a first gen model on Kijiji for $300, which seems ok.

Cheers.

Whatever iteration of the Sony RX 100 series you can afford is the best you will do for a P&S in your budget.

I am also assuming you want a retractable lens P&S camera rather than a ILC mirrorless, since price can be very similar.

I somewhat agree now, if all you care about is to take some random records of your travel, post them in social media and maybe print them in no bigger than 8x10, the current phones now a days will do just fine.

I am loving my Nikon AW1. I use the under water 11-27 for most everything and a 50-110 for the rest.

I bought a fuji xm-1 and while I love the camera, it sucks for travel cause it's big and heavy. Go as small as possible.

For under $500 the RX100 is a great choice.

Others to consider if you're willing to spend more money:

- Canon GX7 (Same sensor as RX100's)
- RX100 Mk3 (wider on the short end 24mm vs 28mm)
- Panasonic LX100 (a little larger, larger sensor and faster aperture)

Canon s120 is a super capable little shooter, 1080p video, wifi, shoots raw. I've had 2 (both got stolen, goddamnit) and will likely buy the next iteration.

Awesome low light performance on that little guy.

Thanks for the feedback. Going to check out the S120 as well.

I've got a nexus4 so the camera just doesn't deliver

Note that the RX 100 series cameras use a *much* larger sensor than most P&S cameras, including the S120. Don't just look at the spec sheets (you probably already know that though).

Picked up the first gen rx100 from vistek (price match cam store for $499). Its already overwhelming coming from a base model powershot and the aperature mode is wicked. Should be great for Thailand travels.

I picked up the Nikon AW1 with the 11-25mm underwater lens and a 30 - 100 mm dry lens. I used it for about 3 hours a day every day for a week and a half in Jamaica just for snorkeling plus the rest of the day. Zero problems so far it is my primary fishing camera as well.

My other recommendation would be on the the pentax underwater series. I used the W10 for about 4 years and it is still doing great as my backup camera.
