View Full Version : AMVIC Inspection mean anything?

So I bought a vehicle almost 2 weeks ago. There was a slight humming noise coming from the engine, which I thought was just due to the nature of the engine. It would go up and down with the RPMs. I mentioned it to the dealer (small dealer) and they said they are not aware of any issues it has been inspected by a different shop.
The car was "AMVIC" inspected and showed no issues.
I took the car to an independent mechanic after purchase, and they say I need a new power steering/suspension pump which would cost $2100 for the pump and about $900 in labour and shop supplies. They said it is on its way out and that the fluid is black and smells burnt, probably because it has never been changed.
Now, I put on about 800 kms on the car since purchase, do I have any leg to stand on, or am I out of luck since it is sold as is where is, and it has been a few kms since I purchased it, and theoretically could have happened any time after purchase.

What the hell type of car do you have that costs $2100 for a new power steering pump?!? and cost $900 in labour?
Sounds like you are going to be bent over twice.

Mercedes with a Hydraulic suspension. It is a Power Steering/ABC suspension pump.

Ouch!
AMVIC is really only as good as a technician wants to bother with.
Perfect example $50 kijiji "inspection"

The Amvic inspection is mainly for safety related issues that are immediate. If the pump had failed while in the hands of the dealer then they would have to replace it for it to pass inspection. You've since signed off on the amvic and have purchased the vehicle from them so it all falls on you now which is brutal.
With that being said, if I were the dealer I'd have that issue handled. I'd be upset and I know I'd never recommend them to anyone.

Yea it for sure was like that in their hands. Also the rotors seemed slightly warped, and they just said it was because it was sitting for a while and that it would go away after a little bit of driving. Which of course it has not.
I guess I should of got stuff written down or looked at prior to purchase. But it is hard sometimes to book a Mercedes dealership to take a look at a vehicle.

Pretty much out of luck. Which dealer was it?

Isn't there a mediator service in Alberta for buyers and sellers to settle their differences?
CAMVAP... may help. Don't know much about them.
AMVIC may also mediate between the two as well. Depends how far you want to go with it.

Sounds like their "technicians" are just signing off on the inspection regardless of what the vehicle needs. I would make a call to Amvic in the morning and express your concerns. You might have something.

But is there anything they can really do? They could just say "oh it must of crapped out after he bought it".

A call from Amvic might make them take ownership of the problem.

Just call Amvic and worst case they tell you SOL.
Sucks that it happened so soon but a lot of these stories could be easily avoided with a REAL inspection and what were you thinking by believing the sales guy that the issues werent serious and would go away?!?!?! Even if i had to wait 2 weeks for a real inspection I would especially with an out of warranty luxury car. Sorry to sound harsh but these situations happen too often and they could be easily avoided.
You also gotta pay to play :D My neighbor bought a used range rover and its been sitting on their driveway for the last 5 months because they cant afford to fix the air ride and something else:rofl:
GET INSPECTIONS FOLKS AND IF THERES ANY ISSUES ON THE TEST DRIVE GET IT IN WRITING THAT THEY WILL FIX IT.
inspections are not a 100% guarantee but it will be better than going off the dealer own inspection

The funny part is, I didn't practice what I preach, just like what you said Rocket1k78.
I guess it being the only car for sale in Alberta, and them not showing up often got the best of me.

Just an update, the Dealer is willing to get me a pump. They found one used for $700 in BC. The install would cost $700 and they think that I should cover that. Opinions?

Do they not have a warranty? Every used dealership i know of has always had a 30-90 day policy on all of their vehicles.
If they do, and its within this window, new parts 100% covered. If they dont and they are extending you an olive branch, take it.

Right...I got that. But in my experience even the small places have a 30 day warranty.
