View Full Version : What do you heat your house at?

Curious to see what other beyonders do for heating. I keep my house at a steady 19 Celsius all winter long. Would I save money on heating if I let the temp come down during the day and then heat it back up come 5-6pm?

What do you guys have your thermostats set at?

two furnaces... so depending on time of day i have the different floors heated more or less... but 19?! yeah i set mine at 19... when im sleeping  ...well no... more like 18, but yeah 21 is room temperature, so yeah i like 21

20 degrees in the rooms we are using during the day... we don't really heat the bedrooms unless it's chilly at night.

We also live on the Island and have electric baseboard heat which can be controlled by room... so our set up is a bit different.

We did 18 degrees as the default temp setting in our house in calgary and would bring it up to 20 when we were home and watching TV, etc... let it fall to 18 at bedtime.

My overnight temp is 16.5, but our house cools off so slowly, that it won't hit that unless it's -30 outside.
Daytime temps range from 20.5 to 19.5, we've got more complicated program going.

I think most people turn it down at night, during work hours, or while on Vacation. Assuming you have decent windows/insulation I think that's the way to go, since you house isn't going to cool down that fast anyway, so it's just making sure your furnace is off.

I can't imagine it makes too much of a difference compared to leaving it at 19 C year round though. Everyone I know seems to like it at 21-23C, so turning it down would be to 18-19C or so, but you're already there haha.

17c at night/nobody home
19c when we're home

I don't like it hot at night.... probably could knock it down to 16/16.5 at night easily.

22C all day long. Roommates work random hours and the one that lives in the basement is always super cold.

Don't care too much about the gas bill since its split 3 ways it doesn't hurt all that much. We'll see once it gets really cold.

Edit: Before when it was just me it was ~19 most of the time since it gets really warm upstairs.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...you can't really compare accurately, because depending where your thermostat is located, it might give a false sense of temperature.

e.g. ours is in the middle of the hallway of the bedrooms, which is consistently the warmest spot in the house, so it's set at 23*c, but in reality, the living room (where we spend most of our time) is 21*c

19.5C from home - 11pm

Weekends:
17.5C from 12am - 9am
19.5C any other time when I'm home. Otherwise set at away (17.0C)

I thought the Nest was supposed to learn your habits on it's own? If you just want to program temperatures and times manually, you can buy a cheap one from Honeywell or whatever.

That's what I though as well, why are peeps programming theirs?

As for me, 16.5 at night, 21ish when I am home, 23 when wife home (I work mornings, she works evenings so we have different schedules)

It seems to work well for when I'm supposed t be out of the house and turn it to away mode, and I love that I'm able to crank it up on my phone before I get home so I know it'll be nice and warm.

However I do alot of part-time consulting so I'm home any time from 6pm to 1130pm with no routine so it was difficult for the nest to 'learn'.

Used to be 21.
Then 21.5.
Now 22.

All day.

I now understand why my grandparents place is so hot.

The temp goes up as the years go on.

I can't set temperatures, TV volumes, etc to anything other than whole, even numbers... so all these 21.5 type settings are making me spin...

But running the wood burning stove occasionally in the evening makes it stupid hot in the house...too hot so I can't sleep. But she loves it so I have to suffer.

15.5 when no one home/sleeping
20 when people are awake and home (if I didn't have to listen to whiners it would be way colder all the time, I like hoodies and I am well insulated.....)

Unless someone in my house who is retarded thinks turning it up to 25 is going to make the "house warm up faster" Do that many people in this world REALLY not know how a thermostat/furnace works?

We have been running 18 when no one is home, 19 at night and 21 during the day. However where the thermostat is the actually temperature is lower than the reading. I am thinking I might up all those settings but 1 or 2 c. Better to be comfortable than cold. I am fine but my wife is usually cold. My wife's friend is living with us and at night she has a portable heater on.

I've got my Nest set to 20.5 when we're home and 17 when we're away. Because of the age of my house (100 years this year), its quite bad at retaining heat and with the location of the thermostat, I had to play with it until I found a comfortable setting (we like it colder than average).

Yes. Pretty much every female, ever.

Same goes for car heat... "Oh, it's been sitting outside at -20*c all night? Turning the auto-climate controls to 30*, and turning the fan onto full blast will heat it up right away!"

Chapter 1 of any heat transfer text would show you why you're wrong. A smaller temperature difference between inside and outside reduces heat loss rates, which is why programmable thermostats can be used to save energy and money. It's stupid to be wasteful just because you can.

21 all day. Planning on getting a programmable thermostat to change it to 19 when away and 21 when home. But I have a dog at home so maybe a bit too cold for that temp.

But the frequency of my furnace heating is weird, so I may need to get better insulation cause its literally turning on every 30 mins to heat the house. Is this normal?

My house was built in 1915, but the thing is pretty damn well insulated. The WORST heating and electricity bill combined, that i have EVER had in this house over 6 years, is like 350$.

I notice on cold days its about every half hour. If i look for example, rigth now, my thermostat says it was on 6 hours of the day today.

Set my programmable thermostat at the start of every "season".

Currently:

Weekdays:

20 degrees at 6:30 am - to 4:30 pm (during the day)
22 degrees at 4:30 pm - 11:00 pm
16 degrees 11:00 pm- 6:30 am. (sleeping)

Weekends:

20 degrees at 8:00 am - 12:00pm
16 degrees at noon - 4:30 pm ('cuz usually we're out during the day)
22 degrees at 4:30 - 11:00 pm.
16 degrees at 11:00 - 8:00 am. (sleeping)

While on vacation: hold at 16 degrees. Two cats always in the house

Just changed my old manual thermostat to a programmable one I got for free from a friend.
My manual one had no read out on temp so it was just an eye ball on adjusting and turning it way down when I left the house.
This one, I've been messing with adjustments and originally set it to 20 when at home and waking hours. Dear god, it was boiling in there. Turned it to 18* and made it good for waking hours. 19* for evenings.

Weekdays:

18 degrees at 5:00 am - to 8:00 am
16 degrees at 8:00 am - 5:30 pm
19 degrees 5:30 pm- 11:00 pm
16 degrees (sleeping)

Weekends:
Same deal but with adjusted timing for sleeping in a little and later nights.

While on vacation: I'd hold at 12-14 degrees.

Just to mess with everyone's minds, I have mine in F.

6:30-8 AM and 5-10 PM it is at 68 on the thermostat, and our temp station in the kitchen says 64-65.

All other times it is at 62, and I get really confused on the random weekday when I am super cold when at home in the middle of the day.

Installing new windows and better insulation in a 40 year old house, and a programmable thermostat, has dropped our bills quite a bit each winter, probably 150-200 a month for the really frigid months.
