View Full Version : F150 woes...beware FLAKING GRILLE PAINT

well first off I know everyone's going to chime in about how Ford sucks etc. etc. but peoples opinions aside I just want to ask other F150 owners or people thinking about getting one.

Recently I washed the truck at the coin wash, and was astonished to watch paint flakes come flying off of my grille when rinsing my grille...has this happened to anyone else (I was a reasonable distance away) - Ford of course calls it chipping and wont warranty it, the truck is 5 months old and I have already had the button that controls the sliding rear window break (they covered that) but now this very upset with Ford who I have backed for years, I cant believe they wont warranty this

Anyways, if it happened to you, please report it so they start to cover their shoddy paint jobs (they said only if it becomes a common thing will Ford look into warrantying this issue)...and if we could get this thread noticed through the search engines etc. and get Ford's attention that would be great (That's what I ultimately want) and I know the Beyond community is great at that

Thanks Guys

I have the chrome grille and bumpers, but I have heard stories of people with chipping and flaking issues on the bumpers. I think the 3m Film is very popular on all front painted surfaces for this reason.

Spend the $500-$700 and get it done. First thing I do with a "new" used vehicle. 2 feet of coverage on the front end and bumper. Wheel well coverage if it's going to be running fat tire. Welcome to cheap water based enviro paints.

Just wait until the day after your warranty expires.

Heated seats stop working first (no big deal I can live without), then the heat stops working a couple months later, then the navigation/sync system constantly starts freezing and to top it off engine fails at 46,000km (this was still in warranty time though).

Never again. Back with GM and sticking with GM's.

This is a F150?

^^^ and who doesn't get 3M on their cars nowadays anyway... Spend the 500 bucks and get your cars 3M'ed. Ford wont warranty it, cause the flaking is being caused by rock chips, then your doing over it with a high pressure washer, wtf do you expect to happen?

3m looks like garbage, is unforgiving in small brushes and is unnecessary for many people. I've never had it installed and I usually remove it. I'm industry and have seen all levels from cheap, to dealer precut, to high end lambo cuts. I don't like any of it.

I'd rather see rock chips then bugs imbedded into my 3m. But I don't use highways during the week so its not a concern for me.

Where did he say it was caused by rock chips? Look online and you'll see this problem is constantly talked about in F150 forums and elsewhere.

Yes had 2010 FX4 that was purchased new. It drove like shit after the engine was replaced so I traded in for 2014 Denali. I feel sorry for whoever got my old truck.

I take it you are in the market for a new truck?

I've been driving a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD for the past year and it was excellent. Old style body and interior, but still good. Just changed to the new model recently and it's even better than the last. Awesome trucks.

Very close to rolling 50,000kms on my F150 and I have no complaints about it. I did get 3m though, so no paint chipping here.

Lol, you really can't compare one guys experience with another. Just like you've had nothing but good luck with GM products, where as my experience with them has been nothing but bad.

Although their engines have never given us a problem, pretty much everything else has.

I've had 3M type protection put on any vehicle that I plan on keeping for more than a year. Curious as to why you say it's garbage? It improves resale value. No one likes seeing a zillion pock mark chips on the front of a car. I agree I've seen hack jobs where it's all yellow and visible. But I've never had that issue as I mainly garage mine. I've also never had an issue with bugs in the film. It seems that dealerships do the worst 3M film around. I always go to a specialist.

honestly, most domestics made domestically don't have great paint or finishing and really there are no exceptions to the rule

my deaborn truck was a great value, but does it have fit quality issues? yep... does it rattle at only 10,000km, yep... Do the doors panel shake when I close them? yep
Are there paint flaws? yep
Does the hood open crooked? yep

For what I paid, I can totally live with this level of quality, and don't expect Merc ML or Beemer X series fit & finish.

however for people, like my friends, who own a Platnium or Limited... they have the same problems but paid quite a bit more for upgraded creature comforts.

I've done the 3m from a brand new car before and I hated it after 2 years I still left it though till year 6 when I sold it. My next purschase I didn't get it and I'm quite happy I didnt. My audi I bought used has it everywhere once again not super happy with it but not going to peel it off. I'd rather re paint if I kept my cars that long.

I don't 3m... I have a massive brush guard that has a mesh pattern on 1/8 steel...

So far, no rock chips on my grill or hood

That entire sentence isn't worth the binary code it's written on.

Surprised about the hate for the 3m film. I've had it on a couple of cars, and had zero issues.
