Hey guys curious if anyone has some insight on a FX50 2010-2012ish, or something in that similar segment. We are looking to buy a sporty suv for trips and some city driving. Won't see tons of use as I have a truck for work and girlfriend has a small compact, so prefer something pre owned under $40k.

I've heard great things about these, but people say they are quite small inside. Also considered a 2012+ mdx elite. I like the rwd bias system in the fx but am open to some helpful suggestions.

Cheers!

i'll join in on the BS suggestions, my suggestion is a Porsche 911 turbo awd:nut:

If you don't have kids the FX50 would be more than ok for trips but if you have kids then the MDX is a better choice. The FX50 is a cool looking suv and the sound of the motor is pretty sweet too.

Not sure if these are too small for you, but BMW X3 or Range Rover Evoque?

I don't think you can get an FX50 for under $40k - if you do it will have lots of kms.

FX50 and MDX are worlds apart in driving experience. I think you will find the MDX is lacking the 'sport' in the SUV. However, don't expect to fit too much stuff in the FX ... mostly because the luggage area behind the 2nd row seats is not tall enough. Keep in mind though if it is just you and your gf, then if you fold down the 2nd row you will have tons of space.

RWD bias is pretty sweet when compared to FWD bias but it all depends on how you like to drive. You could get an X5 for under $40k with some kms... I don't know if you can get a V8 though.

ML63 and GL63 are good options lol but definitely not under $40k

Best you can get is a high mileage 550. No 63s.

You can get a 2010+ FX50 for under $40k for sure, as well as a V8 X5. 50,000-80,000km range

You could find a 2009ish ML63 for under $40k. Def high km's though

Damn - you're right.

But closer to 80 - 90k kms range.

This is the only one under $41k (2010 and newer) with less than 80k kms - great deal!

I think the dash got an update in 2013 - otherwise you get the older LCD dash which is still not bad - because you probably won't care with a 420hp V8

That last one is a good deal. I wish that was around when I was looking last year - now this is a good option for replacing my M35 :D :burnout:

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually thought about an X3. It is just the girlfriend and I, no kids just a couple dogs. My concern with the X3 is no bmw dealer in medicine hat. I assumed that Nissan would service and work on the Infiniti, and similar to the bmw, would need a trip out of town for warranty. The few X3's we looked at still had factory warranty though, so I would have to go to Calgary every time.

Is there any issues to consider with the X3, reliabilty? Also any year(s) or options to look for? I've never had a newer BMW so any help would be great. We are hoping to drive both the FX35/50 back toback with a X3.

An out of warranty high km AMG is pretty scary imo.

I would do the FX50 over the X3. The FX looks way nicer and has almost 400hp. The X3 is grandmaish imo.

And all X3s and including the new X4 are horrible to be called BMWs. They feel like something FIAT would make.

I'm actually planning to switch to a SUV after the new year. Just need more space than the Q50S.

I've been looking for 2010-2012 Range Rover LR4. I know on paper they are far from the best in the segment, but there's something about the way they look that gets me excited. Maybe it's because of its rugged SUV look like the G wagon.

Anyone have any experience with the LR4?

All i know is make sure you have warranty. My wife had a range rover and dear god it was always in the shop for electric problems and air ride issues.

They are designed to be disassembled easily when you need to work on them. At least it has a real frame.

SUV? Sport? :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Kudos to the person who was able to convince the world that SUVs are sporty. I think when they came up with that, they meant sport utility as in the utility to deliver your kids and their equipment to a soccer match.

/rant - carry on. :D

Even the utility part... plenty of times I've seen futile attempts to fit something in the hatch.

OP, if you have a truck, you don't need a SUV. Get a sport sedan or even a wagon.

The FX's are ugly as sin IMO, MDX wins here.

Suvs can be sporty, the fx50s is definitely sporty, ml63 is sporty and x5m is especially sporty.

i'm one of those guys who hauls everything in his SUV (X5)... i can fit about 6 pallets in the back with the rear seats down, or about a dozen 2x4s (8ft long) with the rear seats down and boards between the two front seats :P. I could probably squeeze 10ft long boards in there but I don't want them resting against my dash/window :poosie:

I think you are taking "sporty" out of context. Is it sporty compared to a sports car, no. Sporty compared to a Chevy Tahoe? Definitely.

So a sport-SUV is, IMO, a sporty version of an SUV.

In terms of sportiness (<---doesn't seem like a word lol):

FX50 > Pathfinder
X5(M) Suburban
ML63 CX9 etc

How else would you describe a performance version of an SUV?

I mean, if you want to get really anal like this I guess you can say that a "sports car" would be a car designed for "motorsport". Which a huge number of car that people consider to be "sport cars" are not.

Lets just say that OP wants a fast sport utility that when he puts his foot down his him feel good.

The OP should get the original Sports Utility.

On a side note, I have always loved the Vehicross and that sweet sweet TOD system. Sadly they go for crack money used.

^^Haha holy shit I seen one of those last week, really interesting body lines.

We test drove the X3, I agree it feels.."uninspiring" to look at and drive. After that we found a FX50 to look at. Although this one had too many miles on it, we did get a chance to see how they drive. Power was great, space not so much. But I had read that prior to looking so it was no big surprise. It reminded me more of my old SS T-blazer than anything I have tried so far. More connected feel, I quite enjoyed it.

My only other thought would be to consider a wagon, possibly STI, ive heard mixed responses on buying a used one, but its on the list at this point. I appreciate the input, hoping to pick up something before January

honestly nobody believes me when I say look at the BMW X1.....I know it's the smallest of the SUV's, but here's why I love it:

-lots of space inside
-definitely sporty (sits low for suv)
-handles amazing
-2L turbo + AWD + 8 speed auto = fun!
-you can pick up a gently used one for $30-35k that's nicely optioned

while it's not as quick as the 63 amg's or the FX50's, it's still surprisingly sporty and fun to drive.....

Why not the X1 35i then?

They're more rare because fewer people bought them. I've seen the X1 35i with the M sport package on the street and it looks great.

I've seen the sticker on an X1 with the 2.0 and M and it was north of $70. What a fucking rip off. No wonder it would be "rare".

I've never driven one but i can already imagine the feel of the x3. If i were you guys i would get something fun since you dont have kids and dont need a ton of space.

LOL M or not theres no way to justify $70k for an X1.

70k for one?!?! my boss got his wife her 2nd X1, (first didn't have power seats :D ) and loaded up with real leather, sensors front and back, power seats, basically loaded was only 55k.....plus you can find a gently used one easily in the high 20's-low 30's. I would never recommend buying brand new. too much depreciation loss!
