Probably if you pay extra for oversize luggage. Might get expensive.

Keeping it under wraps until it's actually in my hands. It's a homerun tho.

Now I'm big on winter tires as much as the next guy but have you considered just driving it on the All Seasons during the day?

Seems like alot of expense for a quick highway drive. Esp because of how warm half the journey will be. I wouldn't drive at night with them but wouldn't it be better to stay at a nice hotel somewhere along the way instead or something.

How nuts is the car that you think it wont make it on all seasons? :burnout:

I just made the trip from Vancouver to Calgary a couple days ago. That was the worst conditions I've ever seen. The passes were all closed, took me 4 days. Winter tires for sure!

If you 100% MUST get those tires to the coast, here's an option. Have them shipped Greyhound to vancouver, they'll be there "next-day" according to the website. Pick them up at the Greyhoudn desk, drive to a tire shop, have them put on, drive home. I jsut did a sample quote ont he website and it was $140, which is probably much cheaper than air freight.

you won't see any snow between victoria and vancouver either, so no worries on all-seasons for that portion of the route.

Good luck man, can't wait to see the new ride.

Things have gotten better since then though no? I mean we just had a huge blizzard, I'm not suggesting he drive through a blizzard on AS but a cool sunny day?

Looks like passable conditions for AS in the daytime no?

No time to spare, not even a weekend? You can always have a vacation out of it while you wait for the tires to come in...

You can check-in tires. Just depend if your wallet will let you. :)

It's AWD with LSD's and clearance, but I don't want to fuck around with these conditions. Stress free since 1983.

I can get the hakks today for $1000 all in. Kal tire in vic will mount them saturday morning. I just need a solid way of getting there saturday morning at 8am - greyhound's priority is still a 2hr buffer for allowed delivery parameter.

Friday @ 8PM. I haven't checked the forecast because it seems irrelevant when the main highways can change so quickly.

man you would be fine on all seasons, just came back from revelstoke on sunday and it wasn't that bad. My friend did the trip out on friday and back sunday on MT's and he was fine, and friday was the worst ive ever seen it... Just be careful and hope it doesn;t snow anymore lol

Get someone to ship it for you after you leave so Greyhound has a 1 day buffer (if Greyhound is cheaper than Vic Kal Tire)

I drove back on Sunday and road conditions are pretty bad. Snowy and black ice everywhere especially on coquihalla highway. I was driving an STI with studded winters and its slippery so good luck

Even if I was confident I'd be fine, I still wouldn't risk getting turned away at the coq for not having winter tires.

Probably cheaper and easier to rent a trailer and go get it or have it shipped.

You're stupid if anyone considers driving Calgary to Vancouver in the winter on all seasons.

Did it once on winters and never again. Traction wasn't my issue but visibility was. Ran out of washer fluid at the continental divide at 1am. Good thing that hotel was still open.

When I was looking at shipping my wheels out to Regina, FedEx was $60/each and they were big, 33" diameter and 75lbs each. Probably cheaper than flying.

Have you called the airline already?

My dad shipped wheels back from the UK with him this fall, I think he paid very little extra bagged fees to get them on the plane.

It probably helped that they are 13"s and weigh like 10lbs though.

This is the biggest issue, you have to have snow rated tires or chains to get through the passes, no ifs ands or buts. They'll turn you away if you don't have them :dunno:

And yes, I've traveled with rally tires out east before. As the OP found out, it actually isn't too bad.

I just checked, Tires are NOT considered dangerous goods and can be checked in provided that they are deflated completely (they can be loose or mounted on rims). If you are wrapping them up as two per package, make sure they are secure, I also suggest rope, and make a handle for the bag tag to be placed on by the CSA (The bag tags can very quickly lose their stickiness to plastic in cold weather).

Try to get there at least 2 hours prior to your departure. Due to the Holidays, there is a much higher load factor, and wait times to see a CSA can exceed 30 minutes if you aren't able to use self check kiosks.

Generally speaking, you'll be safe as long as you don't exceed 50 Lbs an item, and are close to the maximum size. The CSA's tend to be sticky on the weight, but generally don't measure exact item dimensions unless it is obviously oversized. If they are under the maximum size listed on the website, just keep the dimensions written down so they can verify them.

Hahaha, I knew Tik-Tok would figure it would. It's a 6MT Allroad. Fern Cloth interior. Bought it from the original owner, an older gent who took really good care of it. It's pretty mint and has every service record since new. Not a lot of cloth allroads around - especially not with the 6-speed. I paid about half the asking price of most allroads listed on kijiji.

The tires were completely unnecessary from Victoria to Hope, but once I was about 100km outside Revelstoke, it was all iceroads. I could easily do the limit (120km/h) and the difference in traction between my Hakk 8's and XI3's is ridiculous. The only downside is that you can't really drift on packed snow very easily - they offer that much grip. I'm excited for it to start dumping.

Yeah, it's really really green... :nut:

Everything is good. I've read that k03 turbos are really only problematic in B5 S4's.

It's got 130,000kms, airbag suspension was replaced under warranty a couple years ago, new clutch/fw last year, abs module a few months ago, pretty much all the big ticket items have been addressed. The only thing it needs is a detail!

If he flew on a Wesjet Flex ticket, the first checked item is free. So with only carry on, the second bundle of tires is $25.

Nice! I assumed they'd be over the weight limit and fall into the more pricey baggage fees

IIRC it was ~28lbs per tire, so I was just under the 65lbs limit

Yeah, the only problem I had with my turbo's, was that the oil return gaskets started leaking, and to replace them means taking the engine out.

If I didn't have so many other previous and impending problems with the car, I would have just done an upgrade at that point.

Still miss driving her. Especially on the highway.
