What's the list? Also need reasonable back seat space as the purchaser has a teenage kid.

Impreza

To meet all your criteria, including "Car", pretty sure you're just looking at an Impreza.

Otherwise you're looking at a low-mid optioned cute-ute like a CR-V, CX5, Sportage, Rogue, etc.

Edit title from car to vehicle.

Finding AWD under the $28K mark has been the challenge so far.

$28k all in, or $28k pre-taxes etc.?

GMC Terrain these. The new Encore looks like a good little SUV.

The Jeep Renegade should be in that price range if they are not buying immediately. They could likely also find a '14 Cherokee at the upper range of 28K if they haggled a bit, especially when the '15s start rolling in.

How tall is the kid? Are we talking about over or under 6'?

And options needed or a bare bone AWD?

You can probably get a Dodge Journey and it may be under $28K with year end discounts.

Tahoe Denali, less than 3 payments of $28k

Serious answer: GMC Terrain, buddy just grabbed one and likes it so far.

A Mazda CX5 GX AWD has an MSRP of $28 095 plus freight/pdi, fees and taxes and is one of the few import SUVs still made in Japan. I'll work them a deal of dealer invoice plus a very small percentage over Bill. Mazda also has an Unlimited mileage warranty on all their 2015 models.

Doesn't the Subaru forester win all small SUV awards. Just sucks we have crappy dealers here. I think it starts at 24k.

The Forester starts at 26K plus freight and fees but Subaru rarely sells them as a basic package, for a small price increase you ad the convenience package and that gets you alloy wheels instead of steel wheels, fog lights and a few other nice features. The CVT is one reason why I'm not crazy about the Forester anymore.

No bs, just straight up, this is the fair price etc. unlike fullfledgedyyc, if ask him what the deal is he might chase me out the door.

i like the mazda unlimited thing since i put anywhere from 40-50k on a car/year except i divide it between 3 vehicles haha

You won't get a CR-V for under $28K with AWD unless it's the left over 2014 model which should be slim in picking at this point.

Thanks Sam! Having spent 10 years in the luxury vehicle business Mazda is a big change but I've come to really like them. They're edgy, similar minimalistic interior to BMW as well as a similar multimedia interface, very direct steering and road feel and no CVT! haha.

Now that Im becoming more comfortable with the product and pricing I can put some real deals together for anybody out there who wants one.

I read that as being the teen in the back seat, so it needs to be big enough. Not that they would be driving. But I suppose that might happen?

i had a 2014 rogue for a work vehicle and the base is pretty dressed up(backup camera, bluetooth). they are boring as hell to drive and the cvt sounds like a rubber band. that being said I took it through rogers pass at night during a storm in february and it handled like a gem. they also get ridiculous fuel economy, partially because you are never tempted to step on it.

:nut: Yeah CRV ' S suck. My mom has one and I despise it entirely. Fuck I hate that thing. I ended up getting it completely stuck in an alleyway that had some hard pack snow and ice. AWD? Oh okay :nut: she likes it because it's good on gas, but.....

28k all in they are looking at Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Nissan Rogue S base AWD possibly. Nothing else (worth while) will be under 28k once you add freight/pdi dealer fees and tax.

most of these entry level AWD suck so bad you are better off saving the coin and getting FWD. If they want AWD its gotta be Subaru

Thanks for the input guys, Subaru is about the only thing she hadn't considered yet. My concern would be the lack of dealer support in Calgary. I don't have any first hand experience but I get the impression that both of the dealerships here can leave a lot to be desired when it comes to customer service.

We have 2, 2012 Outbacks.

If I had to buy a new car with a 28k budget, I would definitely be looking at a Forester or Outback.

You can service your Subaru anywhere. We get our Impreza/WRX/Forester/Tribeca done at Integra Tire.

I bought a 2010 legacy gt from Centaur and took it there for the first two years of service and never had any issues. Thereafter took it to All Makes (definitely less expensive to service than the dealer).

Even if you buy new; you can take it to All Makes Auto Repair for servicing (would recommend based on my experience with them).

We just bought a 2015 Subaru Legacy. Great car with lots of room in the back. You should be able to get the base model all in at your price range.

I've driven the Mitsubishi RVR, I owned an Outlander. I'm pretty happy with both of them. A fully loaded RVR AWC Limited Edition is $28k on the website, and I'm sure you could knock a couple grand off that.

I've never had any real issues with Subaru Calgary.

But like others have said, you don't have to take it to the dealer for everything.

I've got a 2011 Legacy. I was pissed when they updated the audio and Bluetooth for the '12 and '13 models, but I've never had any problems with the car.

http://driving.ca/editors-choice/family-cuvs does a really good comparison

to me... none of the above really offers good "value for dollar"..

With minivan's disappearing, and the demand driving for cross over awd "c-utes" the pricing I feel has drastically ramped upwards in this specific market.

My friend has a Subaru Forrester and though its a "nice" and capable CUV, its gas mileage is pretty awful for a car weighing under the 4k mark... and really lacks space (as most in this segment do)

For the price of this thing out the door... you could get into a similarly loaded Supercrew FX4 with an ecoboost with probably close "real world" fuel economy.

The teen isn't driving, just a passenger. I like the Fusion idea, hadn't considered it yet.

Mitsubishi is pretty much off the table as they are the most expensive brand to insure dollar for dollar ($30,000 Mitsu vs. $30,000 something else).

I appreciate the help guys, this isn't a market segment I've shopped before so I haven't paid a lot of attention to it.

That said, for a teen it should really be a gutless hatchback to keep them out of trouble that they can stuff all of their belongings into when they leave for Uni. Dropping a brand new full size truck or SUV, or an AWD car with a bazillion horsepower into the hands of a 16 y/o is just asking for trouble.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. The Fusion is a great car, its my top choice whenever I need to rent a car. If I didn't have the Subaru, I probably would have bought a Fusion.

But the Fusion, at least for 2015, only comes in AWD with the 2.0L engine.

The Fusion SE 2.0L with AWD starts at over $29K. Without adding any options (MyFord Touch is well worth the $800, IMO), MSRP is $32,500 after taxes. You can knock some of that off, but I don't know if you'll get under $28K.

And I might be mistaken on this, but I read the OP's post as, the person looking for the vehicle needs it to have decent room in the back seat for the teenager, not that the car is for the teenager. Although I suppose he/she might drive the car at some point.

Gutless hatchback, AWD, sounds like perfect Subaru territory. 2015 Impreza 2.0i hatch MSRP is $23,000, no idea of incentives right now.

Subaru's feel like you have gone back in time. Good AWD system, but the rest of the car is so dated looking and feeling.

I would find a way to get the Fusion personally, they are damn impressive for the price and feel like a significantly more premium car. Lots of good deals on leftover 2014's on the lot that would come in under that price.

I actually just bought a 2014 Fusion Titanium AWD since my F10 was written off and I needed something to hold me over until the C450AMG and 340 come out. I love the car though and everyone I have let drive it wants to buy it off me.
