I've had a lot of different cars, mostly beaters.
First car was a 0.2, I got down to a 0.02 after university for two cars in a row, highest was a Mazda3 that I bought brand new, worked out to a 1.2.
My current truck is a 0.74.

Don't know if I'll ever crack the 1.0 mark again. Honestly don't see the point. Maybe when my kids move out . . . .

A similar poll based on car price vs annual income would be funny. I was driving a $500 truck for a year where my T4 was over $100k once. That was a special year, my co-workers thought it was hilarious.

I should say I like to keep the wife's car around the 1.0 mark.

was thinking more about the car price to income thing. To me, I think income /10 is a pretty reasonable budget a vehicle.
I'm sure that's waaaay low for this crowd, but in my area, people live in expensive houses and drive cheap cars.

Meh, this stat is kind of irrelevant though, more of a fun stat than anything. If I really wanted to be ridiculous I'd go out and pick up a SLS Black Series and rock a 9 on the scale.

If my career didn't go the way it did, I'd be driving a 1 on the scale.

If you conform to social expectations, you most likely wouldn't succeed far enough to surpass a 1 on the scale within your means.

If you are a teen for instance, getting a 28K car is way over what the social expectation of what somebody that age should drive.

Flash forward to your average 40 year old... a 28K car might be sensible for that person, but the social expectation is that they pick up something a little more expensive and comfortable.

Flash foward again to somebody who is getting into their late 50's... a very comfortable retirement luxury vehicle is probably on the horizon, and that is more or less the social expectation.

I see what you're saying. I agree. The only caveat being a persons socio-economic status. There are some subsets where 16 year old's get new M3's (I know someone who got one), so in that group a 28k car for a teen is average, if not below.

Depends how many variables were in the equation... someone around must be good at math and could come up with a formula with age, car cost, and shelter (primary) cost vs income

Yea, the key is to not give a fuck about what other people think and just do what makes you happy.

Looking back at my past purchases, it's pretty interesting how the ratio changed to coincide with events that affected my personal finances. When I was younger, I was at a 5.2 ratio, living with the parents, and making decent money. Bought a house and that dropped things down to a 2.8, still a bit irresponsible with money. Then came the divorce, financial fallout, where my DD dropped to a 0.96 ratio. As I climbed out of debt, the next DD went up to a 1.2, and slowly worked its way up to a 2.4 ratio. Once the mortgage was paid off, I rewarded myself with a 2.9 DD.

I think that's a more interesting way to look at the stat than anything. Too bad the ratio doesn't account for inflation, it would show that I was even more reckless in my 20's.

This.

I bought a powerful BMW because when I was 12 I went to the auto show with my dad and fell in love with them. Been obsessed with them since. And after graduating school, buying a house, getting engaged ( all the responsible person stuff) I went to the Auto show again. Saw the new 2 series. Fell in love. Went down to the dealer the next weekend and cut a cheque.

Did I / Do I get a lot of flack for it?

Absolutely ( Including by some pretentious douches who make fun of me for having a "75 grand car" while they wear a 2,000 dollar Canada Goose Jacket, )

But I am the one who gets to smile every time I drive it. Fuck 'em.

2.0 here, no HELOC. I can't say I've ever felt out of place or judged based on my age/car... Maybe it'd be different if I spent the same amount on a coupe?

The age x 1000 rule of thumb probably needs to have some Calgary O&G baller factor applied to it. It almost seems outside the norm for a new grad engineer to not go out and buy a 3 series when they land their first job.

If you want to have some fun, do the discretionary income / car price ratio and see how many people are buying cars beyond their means. By using discretionary income instead of income, you wouldn't have to reveal your income either. :)

edit - got my terms mixed up, it's discretionary income I'm looking at, which is income - taxes - cost to live (rent/mortgage, debt servicing, food etc).
