I looked online for a key fob and see people buying them off eBay and having a locksmith program it . The car in question is a 2002 Saturn SL2.
Has anyone had any luck doing it this way? Seems to be about half the price of buying it at the dealer, and she would like to spend as little as possible .

Different manufactures use different systems.

I have had success on a few Fords with programming a third key. No idea of the system on her car, but you'll need to do careful research.

The remotes themselves can be had for around 25-30 and they say it's oem. Not sure how much a dealer or locksmith would charge though. (Yes I will call... Just seeing who's had similar experiences )

Honda dealer charged me 170$ (new OEM FOB + cut + re-program+ 1 hour labor I guess).

Bump...

I need another fob for my 2011 Ram 1500...

dealer wants 180 + 75 for programming.

I can get the ebay units for 30 - 40 but need programming assistance.

Anyone have a hookup ?

Just called them...

They can only do up to 2009 model years and not the brand I have, of course...
