The Calgary Police Service is warning business owners and motor vehicle dealerships to be vigilant following the theft of key-making equipment.

Between 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, and 5 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, four unknown men broke into a Calgary locksmith company.

Once inside, the culprits took approximately $70,000 worth of tools and equipment specific to lock manufacturing and safe maintenance. The equipment can be used to cut and activate vehicle keys, including electronic chip keys and vending machine keys. The suspects also stole a device that has the capability to unlock combination safes.

The first man is described as Caucasian, and was wearing a Nike sun visor, dark clothing, dark gloves and wore a black bandana.

The second man is described as Caucasian, wearing a dark hoodie, jeans, a baseball cap and dark gloves.

The third man was wearing a grey hoodie and a mask with a picture of a skull on it.

No description is available for the fourth man.

The suspects fled in a stolen white 2010 Nissan Xterra that did not have a license plate on it at the time.

CCTV photos of the people, as well as the vehicle, believed to be linked to this investigation can be found on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

Dealerships and businesses with combination safes are asked to keep a close eye on their properties and report anything that may appear suspicious.

Those cctv pictures are terrible. You'd think they'd have to get better security considering they're in the security business.

Can someone explain to me how chipped keys can be activated without physical access to the vehicle and an original active key?

^There's got to be a way to access the info with reference to a VIN #. Obviously, not accessible to the public, but hey, neither is all this equipment.

You probably only need physical access to the car. I think all manufacturers have a system to bypass the need for a programming key. People lose those all the time... That is probably the kind of device that was stolen.

no, any chipped key will need to be programmed to the car in order for it to run the car. there is no way to by-pass it. even if you order a key from the factory by VIN, it would only come cut to match the keycode of the car giving access to the car, you still need to program the key to the car or else it won't run the vehicle.
