Man spreading. Do you do it?

'Man-spreading' on public transit draws online fury - link (http://www.thespec.com/news-story/5234377--man-spreading-on-public-transit-draws-online-fury/) to story and
link (http://mentakingup2muchspaceonthetrain.tumblr.com/) to related blog.

I haven't regularly used transit in over 7 years now but when I did, I was never a man spreader as I was taught to be respectful of others and their space. Yeah, there's the usual excuses as to why a man might have to spread but it just doesn't wash - they're all just excuses except for the one where one of my brothers had testicular cancer and had one testicle swell up to the size of a baseball before being operated on, that I can accept as an excuse for man-spreading as he literally couldn't cross his legs. The rest of the reasons - truly all just balderdash.

A couple of examples from the blog...

I tend to sit wide in the knees for sure, but not at the expense of everyone around me. I just am not comfortable sitting with my legs almost together, but at the same time I would be less comfortable being the douche on the train taking up 3 times the room I need when others are scrambling for a place to sit down.

the 1st one, irks me, but not that badly. dude on the left is crowding the first open seat making sitting there really uncomfortable. I wouldn't make a stink about that one.

The second one is trolling, or a flamer trying to pick up another guy and trying to show off his package.

But I, Like Tirebob, just can't be comfortable at all with knees together.

I saw this on the news and couldn't stop laughing. First world problems! The lady going around transit asking people about it was interviewing this guy over 6' tall and fairly heavy and asked him why he wouldn't cross his legs. As a girl, even I could figure that one out without asking.

Yes it's a dick move to sit like that however people are dying and there are far worse things going on in the world and this makes the news. Please.

i would sit next to pic 2 and rub his leg. he will get the point.

I had some heffer decide to plomp down beside me at the medicentre yesterday. Her XXXL coat was in my lap. Then she tried to stand up to see the doctor and the chair wanted to come with her. It was a little awkward but not the end of the world. What was I supposed to do, yell hey fat ass, you're invading my space back off?!

The second guy looks like a douchebag with that stupid smirk and man satchel. Looks like he's giving birth. First guy looks like the typical c train zombie staring as his phone. But to be fair, those transit seats are also not wide enough for anyone beyond a size small. At least, not wide enough for anyone who wants to sit comfortably.

Man spreading, there's a time and a place. When people have to stand due to your spreading it's time to close those legs and suck it up.

But really, people do all sorts of inconsiderate things on transit. Giant purses, back packs on seats. Hardly newsworthy.

I avoid transit at all costs but if I was riding I wouldn't really spread, just not clamped together fully.

I take up two seats, until the train/bus starts getting full, then I compact down to one. Or I just stand up if it's a longer ride, as sitting with my knees close together and at right angles makes them hurt like hell after 10 minutes.

I wonder why the blogger has a hate on for men though, as I see women taking up two seats all the time as well. Either by sitting sideways, or by putting their purses/bags on the seat next to them.

No different than morbidly obese people taking up too much room also.

Okay, let's bring up a different but similar situation - you're on a 6 -8 hour flight. Do you man-spread then with strangers on either side of you? Do you care if someone man-spreads into your seat space on that same flight?

I do know that when I was a regular transit user and got on a bus that had people standing and where there were spots being partially occupied by a man-spreader that I had no issues sitting down beside the man-spreader and making sure that man-spreader was now spreading only into their area and not my seating space. Made for some interesting rides sometimes and certainly grins from other standing passengers - actually had a few man-spreaders get up and stand because they could not spread to their heart's content.

The way I see it, if you want to man-spread then do it on a seat that has aisle space that will accommodate your spread - anywhere else is just plain bad manners.

Or maybe, like me, they have knee problems where sitting like that literally hurts them

Actually, it's a great term and I also agree on the obese but what are you going to do about them on a public transit vehicle - I would imagine that many of these obese people are all too well aware of their size and how it impacts others in a public space. Denying the obese access to that public space would be discrimination in it's purest form while making an issue about man-spreading certainly is not - men can opt not to spread or at least do it in a space that can accommodate them without really affecting others (aisle seat).

Understandable and if an aisle seat can accommodate you, then that would probably be preferable to the assumptions one might make about you in another seating space.

Problem is that most man-spreaders probably don't have bad knees or a swollen testicle like my brother had when he had testicular cancer - their reasons are paper thin excuses at best.

As I fly at least once a week, its never been a huge issue. But 99% of the time I pre-book an aisle seat to avoid issues like that.

What the airlines should do, it cut 2-3 inches off the seatbelts and not hand out extensions. That would solve a ton of issues.

No, it's not a great term. It's fucking stupid and you sound fucking stupid repeating it. It's just right. Fucking. Dumb. :)

Edit: I've thought about it and it's even more stupid than I first suspected. If someone is in your way, say excuse me and sit down. Problem solved.

Nope, great fucking term - pretty much perfectly describes the applicable physical situation.

That said, I do remember ladies (don't know if I should call them that) who would use an extra seat on the bus for their stuff and that's just as annoying.

Holy fuck.. Is this seriously what the world has come to? We already know people generally don't give a shit about anyone other than themselves and people like the 2nd picture just prove that.

I hate sitting on the trains and will generally stand but in any other situation as a few others have said its 100% uncomfortable for me to sit with my legs closed. I don't go full ass wide open but I will sit with my legs open so I am comfortable.

Regarding the trains.. the ones that you sit sideways in the individual seats.. I barely fit in the seat alone.

I do it, but only when I am not impeding someone else's space. It is very uncomfortable not to as years of hockey has ravaged my body :whipped: . If all else fails I will choose to stand.

I'd say your gripe is mostly with the theater then, they installed the reclining seats that go back so far.

Geez, something does make the news and aside from that, there's even a transit system (New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority) that's released public service ads regarding men being courteous to fellow transit riders and people on Beyond are getting their panties all knotted up because they don't think it's worthy of discussion?

Here's a simple solution - if you don't like the thread or what's being discussed in it then don't bother commenting. Your day will move along quite nicely and you'll save yourself a bit of aggravation and last time I checked, no one was forcing anyone on Beyond to comment on anything. For the record, New York Times article - link (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/21/nyregion/MTA-targets-manspreading-on-new-york-city-subways.html?_r=0) and one of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority's sample ads...

http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/12/21/nyregion/21MANSPREADING4web/21MANSPREADING4web-articleLarge.jpg

Anyhow, I am truly sorry if anyone's day has been unsettled by this thread - I found the news article regarding man-spreading both amusing and interesting at the same time.

^^^totally see where you're coming from. Ok, yes the theatre shouldn't install seats that recline back that far, but seriously, do we need to babysit every single fucking person? People these days need to learn to have a bit of respect for others, and conduct themselves in a civilized manner, and ill tell you, it seems SERIOUSLY lacking in this day and age. Some people i think just need a good hard punch in the back of the head.

Surprised no one has mentioned the "saving room for cats" meme.

http://savingroomforcats.tumblr.com/

I habitually sit "wide", but am also conscious of the space and proximity of others.

A year ago I got bitched out by some dude for sitting like that "across from a lady". Honestly, I don't think she noticed - She was intently reading "50 shades of grey".

Never been to a theater where the seats came that far back, but seriously, I would anchor my foot to the sticky ass floor, push my knee forward and just ease her more upright then keep her there.

Some people seem to go out of their way to be ignorant asses. I would take great pleasure in emptying the contents of a waterbottle into that second guys lap if the train were full. He would be to his feet before it was even done pouring.

Damn right I do, but I am also a small Asian, so I have no problem staying within the confines of a single seat.

I don't mind if others do it beside me, but also won't budge if they're invading "my space" and touching me.
I won't make a fist, but the middle knuckles will be protruding and be the only point of contact resting between us.

werd.

at the movies i fully recline. If someone has a problem they can move. I paid the same price as they did. This is also my opinion on airplanes, though an airplane seat would be more difficult to move
