been thinking of getting a compact premium camera and spent a good hour playing with the LX100, RX100III and X30.

the RX100 III was too small and uncomfortable to shoot with and menu is terrible.
the LX100 was fast, nicer to hold than the RX100 but I didn't like the EVF much, the X30 EVF looked nicer, brighter and cleaner.
the LX100 though had the advantage of wider FOV (24mm vs 28mm), also although none of these camera has bulb mode the LX100 could go as far as 1 min whereas the X30 only as far as 30s.

of the 3, the X30 is my favourite, it's the one that feels and shoots like a camera the most.

I just picked up the RX100iii, it is small but I'm really enjoying it so far. I've found the menu really intuitive to navigate, haven't shot with it all that much yet, but so far so good.

If it's just 28mm on the short end, why not just keep with the X100? For travel mainly or just general use?

mainly for travel, the X100 will be the main camera, GR w/ 21mm if I foresee shooting UWA landscape but I'm thinking what if I need tele, like 70mm or 100mm.
Xpan and/or GF670 as film cameras.

I could just bring the A7 and M lenses (21,35,50,90) too but don't really want to be swapping lenses when travelling.

another alternative would be X100 w/ GW3 for 28mm, then the A7 w/ 35-70 Vario-Sonnar but it's a big heavy combo

have a lead on an X20 for cheap so will be checking it out first

Outside of the experience and the (3/4) medium format "Look" the D810 is superior in every way. But I fucking love this thing so far. Plus there are only two sub 28mm options and they start at $5k :rofl:

So far all my lenses seem to play nicely with it (35/75/105/150) except the 45mm which needs to get to about 5.6 to look decent. Probably going to get the new 55mm lens which is optimized for digital and has fancy things like a quiet focus motor and "coatings".

To get the 25mm I'd need to unload my 17mm TS-E, and I love that lens so we'll see. Plus you know I love to carry like 7 different camera chargers with me when I travel.

Its a 0.795 crop factor on the horizontal, so 45 is 35 and 55 is 44. 0.73 factor on the vertical (4:3 vs 2:3) aspects, so shooting in portrait mode is a little wider.

Yup, CCD so no liveview or such. The new 645Z has that new sony CMOS sensor (same as Phase One IQ250 and the new Hasselblad 50d) and goes to ISO 204k, supposed to be amazing.

Hawaii's probably not until next fall, so I might actually have to shoot some landscapes in Alberta :rofl:

It's definitely chunkier, but it's definitely one of the smaller 645 setups (with a mirror at least).

Wide angle options are:

- 35mm is 28mm,
- there's a 33-55mm zoom that gets you a 26mm wide end, but apparently pretty weak
- New 28-45mm is 22-35mm ($5.2k)
- 25mm Prime that's 19mm ($5k)

There's 2 versions of the 25mm, the 'old' one they still sell in Japan has a shorter lens hood and can be used on film bodies as a 15mm equivalent!

35mm looks pretty good wide open, so does the 75mm. 150mm looks ok, probably about perfect for portraits, 105mm 2.4 is amazing wide open which makes me really really happy. 45mm looks like crap wide open, but totally usable at 5.6

Looking at a used 55mm SDM right now, and probably going to grab a 67 300mm f4 manual focus since they've got a good reputation and are only about $200.

Yeah, I started the PCH at Santa Cruz then switched over to the 101 from San Luis Obispo. Just looking at the map, there was no reason to stay on the PCH the rest of the way since it's all in-land around Santa Barbara. Plus I was losing light by 5:00 and it was completely dark by 5:30 so I wouldn't have seen anything anyways.

It was a pretty fun ride, except for the one-lane-no-passing stretches where everyone was stuck behind the guy driving 20MPH under the limit and the bicyclists who insisted on riding in the middle of the road... uphill :banghead:

That one was out by Beiseker...I went out there looking for them, and then funny enough, as I was coming home saw 3 of them between HWY 2 and Didsbury.

There's quite a few around Beiseker, and LOTS around Mossleigh. They just hang out on top of the power poles and fence posts for the most part. On the power poles they're pretty easy to spot from a ways away, when they're on the fences they blend in surprisingly well. And when you scare them off if they land on the ground unless you don't take your eyes off em they're pretty much impossible to find.

On the power poles they're pretty easy to spot from a ways away, when they're on the fences they blend in surprisingly well. And when you scare them off if they land on the ground unless you don't take your eyes off em they're pretty much impossible to find.

They're really cool, but most of them are really skittish. That's a crop from a 500mm shot, and that's about as close as I could get to them...that one is about 5' wing tip to wing tip, maybe a little bigger.

I'm off work tomorrow, so I'm thinking I'll head out to go try to find some more around Didsbury (wife permitting).

Thanks guys. I got a x100s and the files are amazing for landscape work and shadow detail, but I can't figure out how to edit B&W or skin tones with out making it look weird to me:banghead:

I am shooting raw and the raw files are not like Canon raw files at all. Here is a link to a couple Fuji raw files from my x100s one similar to the one I posted, only way under exposed. The problem I'm having is converting to b&w and it looking really strange.

The Stephen Ave. shot looked really aliased and nasty after trying to recover the extreme underexposure. Colour or b&w.
