Moved this to the right date, dropped the ball yesterday. Went out looking for the Northern Pygmy Owl in Fish Creek - no such luck. Ended up going to the Weaselhead instead and found some small and common birds.

Around 2-2:30? The guy with a tripod and a stopwatch? lol

I took one shot of bankers as a test to see how far the venting exhaust from the building would carry in the image. Need a few shots when it's cloudy and windy out for a project I'm doing.

Got out to Abraham Lake this weekend. Stayed overnight at the hostel in Nordegg, which is actually pretty nice. Unfortunately for sunset I ended up pulling a Lancer from the bottom of an ice slope and sunset was pretty bland. Which then led to a short snowfall not allowing any astro work, to then the lake being covered in snow the next morning. So that section was a total bust.

But right after sunrise (:banghead: ) it was a warm, clear day for snowshoeing in Bow Lake meadows, wildlife watching, hot springs and admiring the stars on the way back into Calgary.

I went to Minnewanka and Louise today. SNOW, SLEET, HAIL from Canmore to turnoff, then nothing but blue bird skies and fresh powder everywhere, was gorgeous.

Walked across Minnewanka, then went up to Louise for some shinny. Great day.

Nothing worth looking at for several reasons:

1. Brought the x100s - not a landscape photographer's camera
2. Was with people that just wanted to use their iPhones and keep moving. Nobody wanted to wait for me to shoot :p
3. Had the camera setup totally, totally wrong, as I was dealing with a battery that will deplete after about 50 shots and was afraid to get too deep into the menu and risk killing the camera.

Auto iso was on, as was the built in ND filter, for some reason all the shots are like 1000+ iso, all the way to 3200. So whilst the look kinda cool/vintage, they're not high quality photos in any respect.

So while it was a terrible day out as a photo expedition, the scenery and weather made up for it on a personal enjoyment level :)

do you shoot with auto ISO on a DSLR as well?
I always manually set my ISO and adjust it and aperture depending on exposure and depth of field I need

disable auto ND and assign it to the Fn key, that way you can quickly turn it on when you need it (ie long exposure or f/2 in daylight)

i tend to use the EVF most of the time to get accurate focus or if I'm using a polarizer, OVF when in the streets shooting at f/8-f/11

spend some time and learn the controls you'll find it as fast or even as faster than a DSLR, Q menu is really handy to have too

X100s w/ 28mm converter is a pretty good combo too if you want something wider

Finally got around to shooting with it. Surprisingly good! Vignettes like a motherfucker, but centre sharpness is good wide open and stopped down only the extreme corners suffer.

Last night @ 10pm got the AuroraWatch alert. I've lost count now the number of times I've seen the aurora from my house.. it wasn't too vibrant but just enough that the camera picked it up. One of these days when there's a massive amount I hope to head out to the mountains for some shots..
