View Full Version : The shortest length of time you've kept a vehicle?

What's the shortest length of time you've kept a vehicle? I just sold a truck today that I bought 10 days ago. I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I gave up and settled on something close, and then a couple days ago a truck came up that was what I wanted in almost every way. So I bought that and sold the other one.

I had a 2014 Audi S4 for about 1.5 months. 4200km.

Longest I've kept a car is a bit over a year...

I've bought a few cars sight unseen that seemed good on paper then I drove them and hated them so sold them immediately. So, some as little as 2-3 days.

I actually bought a CBR 600RR a few years ago and after one ride realized how shitty CBRs are so I dumped it that same day at a loss.

6 days...

71 Mach 1 mustang with a 429 and double holley 4barels...

It was a tank of gas a day to commute, but holy shit the merge onto deerfoot was fun both ways :)

Flipped it for good profit too...

I bought it with a "blown motor" - oil change - solved the oil pressure issue - carb rebuilds solved the fuel pouring into the cylinders, then installing the proper linkages on those 4 barrels - made it run like a .... 70s big block with an aggressive cam and cherry bomb duals... (I really wanted to say smooth... But let's face it - it wasn't)

I owned a 77 Nova SS owned it for 2 or 3 hours.

Bought it at the auction, drove it to the registries office. the guy behind me liked it so much, he made me an offer on it, and I took it. Bought it for $2800 and sold it for $7500. I wasn't even planning on selling it.

10 months. Mazda 3, hated the seats, auto window wipers and the automatic transmission.

It sold within 48hrs and made $1000 profit.

This last year I haven't owned a vehicle longer than 2-3 months.

na mx-5 miata - 3 months
mini truck - 2 months
e36 bmw - 1 month
dc2 integra - 3 months
jdm wrx - 2 months

Might keep WRX another two months. Then get a new car I'll keep probably forever.

Before I get that new car wouldn't mind getting another cheap fun car. Which usually happens when I spend a lot of time browsing Kijiji.

Around 12 hours. Bought an old S-10 and spent the afternoon jumping it until the motor mounts broke, then sold it for the same $100 to my buddy's Dad for a farm truck. Never had plates on it so big deal. Pretty much sums up my teenage years in a small farming town.

31 Months for my GTI. in that time it only cost me 400 bucks in regular maintenance. 220 dollars for a mirror i broke ( don't ask ).

And i only lost about 5k on the depreciation ( and that was me trading it into a dealer and buying it CPO. Not bad)

Probably 14 days. I rarely hold onto a vehicle for more than 6 months. I get bored of them, and if you sell them in that time frame you usually don't lose money on them.

Technically about six months, but I prefer to look at it as a few weeks. In the fall of 2009 I bought a 2008 Yamaha FZ1, rode it a half a dozen times and had to park it for the winter. Didn't care for how it rode so I sold it in the spring. I think I only put about 500 KM on it.

About six months. I tend to keep most vehicles about two years, although for a lot of my driving life, I've had multiple vehicles on the go at once.

Wow I thought I was bad for wanting to switch every year or so. I'd say mine would be a year and a couple of months. But ALL my cars I've kept for more or less that long. The C63 would be the longest (2 years in July) but it might get dropped before that too.

Motor I put into thinmyster's shell which was Redlyne_Jr's shell.
Wheels went to ExtremeSi and got plastiDipped.

8 days.
Back in 2004 I bought a 1985 Honda Shadow off a co worker that had NO idea what it was worth for $1200. I already had the ad running before I even picked it up, and sold it 8 days later for $2700. Nice bike, but making that sort of coin in such a short time was a deal too hard to pass up.

Bought a mint 1992 Mustang 4cyl for $100. Planned on building a track car from it, had a guy knock on my door asking if I would sell it. Long story short, sold it for $2800.

Its not illegal, I made money. :dunno:

When you start actively flipping (>6 cars/year) thats when it becomes a business. I know some people who work at auctions and buy/ sell 5 cars a year and make some money.

2 days.

Purchased a 95 or 96 Honda Prelude on a whim, came with 2 sets of tires/rims and a Escort Passort 9500ix radar detector. Alignment was off and was lazy to get it fixed so i swapped the donut set of tires and kept the rims and radar detector

sold the vehicle, 2nd set of rims/tires and kept the radar detector for a $1,500 profit.

i hate selling used cars :thumbsdow

3 weeks

Bought a JDM NA6 Eunos for £200, put a new exhaust and cheap wheels on it, detailed it and sold it for £900

the wheels that i took off it turned out to be some rare JDM wheels that just needed refurbished, and i sold them for £250 :)

Kinda wanted to keep it longer, as it was such a fun car, but can't argue at that profit for very little outlay!

Hmm, car that I've actually registered and driven around....I can think of a couple good examples about ten years ago

1990 Civic Si- paid $500, invested $3000, sold 2 months later $8500
1991 Civic Si- paid $700, invested $1400, sold 1 1/2 months later $4500

About a month and a half for me. Bought an integra from someone who had no space for it for $500, put about $100 into it and sold it for $2000 about a month and a half later. Also sold the extra rims from it for another $300.

Chrysler Daytona Turbo - 1 month
Bought it just to crank the boost and mess around with. Ended up getting an offer for 3 times what I paid for it.

Nissan 240sx w/SR20DET - 2 months
Traded my 12sec turbo Civic for this. My first RWD car! Goofed around in winter with it a bit.

Nissan Skyline GTS w/RB25DET - 1 month
Traded the above 240sx for this. Sold for cash so that I could buy my Aristo that I've had 3 years.

And if we're counting parts cars:

Ford Mustang 4cyl auto - 5 days
Bought it for 500, drove it home and did a couple burnouts with it. Yes it did burnouts. Took the parts I needed and sold it to picknpull for 200 bucks.

3 months - brand new Toyota Tundra. Truck was too tall and large for our office building's downtown parkade.

Fortunately we didn't get hosed trading it in for our Lexus as the truck was purchased during one of Toyota's huge incentive periods.

5 hours, Bought a 97 VW Jetta at work from a customer who wanted rid of it, had a buyer by the end of the day. 2 bill of sales, one day lol.

Next shortest was a impulse 99 chevy 1500 purchase that ended up having a blow transfer case, sold it to a pot head and broken exactly even 2 weeks later.

Lots of others, but those stand out haha.

30 Days. Picked up a 2003 F150, from the dealership i worked at, one month later the parts guy tells me the air filter for my truck was here. He shows me my old one and tells me how the outside was super dirty. I aksed how he got my air filter as my truck was locked. He said he removed a month earlier becuase it was too dirty.(outisde, as the inside was of course clean).

As I lived in a new development area i probably had a large amount of dust, silt and sand in the motor. So i decided to trade it and came out even.
