On a worldwide scale, this is "a big deal" and a further confirmation of what the Shell CEO said about 18 months ago. "We are a gas company".

In terms of local employment, Hallibaker still makes more waves in Alberta.

Importantly, this is a "trigger" deal similar to 98's deals with Exxon and Mobil and BP/Amoco. We could see some more action here earlier than expected.

What does that mean? What do you expect the local ramifications to be?

It means you will might see some of the bigger canadian companies being bought up or merging together.

If the shareholders get it in their heads its a good idea then :dunno:

Say hypothetically cnq bought suncor or vice versa. Huge waves. Tons of redundant people who will be laid off.

One interesting aspect is that both Shell and BG have LNG export projects on the go for BC

BG in a 50/50 JV with Spectra called Prince Rupert LNG (Prince Rupert)
Shell is operator in a JV with 4 other companies called LNG Canada (Kitimat)

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them cancelled
