Buddy was playing at Gravity tonight. The Zeiss lenses just love B&W photos. Colour it seems kinda hit or miss. Great light and things are incredible, mediocore to bad light it really shows it lol.

It really is quite impressive. But some of the airmen I was talking to over the weekend that used to be assigned to it said it's REALLY finicky. Regardless of that, it still holds a TON of world records for time to climb, payload, and a few other things...definitely super cool, but honestly...put it in the static line across from a B-2 and guess which one generates the crowd :P

The Super Guppy was entertaining to see fly, but honestly, the coolest plane of the show was that WB-57 High Altitude "research" plane. 2'000 square feet of wing area, and a standard mission profile at around 55'000ft, and the ability to go up over 65'000ft. It was just damn cool to see, and not something you would usually see. Like the B-2, they don't take it out and show it off much.

Really awesome app, they actually make actions for PS and LR, but they're $100 each. The Iphone version is like $3 for the pack which is essentially the "demo" for people thinking of getting it for PS or LR!

How do you like that 80-400 Matt? how's the AF for moving stuff?
I'm debating what lens I want to buy right now since I find the 500 is too long for the Motocross track. I'm leaning towards a 300mm 2.8, but I'm tossing and turning on it.

I'm leaning towards the 300 simply because I know the weather sealing on it is really top notch, and the track is dusty as hell.

Steve, I have found that since moving to the D810 and a +5 AF tune that things are pretty awesome, especially with the group-AF. I think the problem with BIF is moreso me than the gear but it's also something I haven't done much of.

That said, the 300 2.8 VRII is a lens that you will want. As much as the zoom is nice, I would still suggest that. Dust will get into the 80-400G, I know there is in mine but I've also been in Africa so that's how it goes. But if you're shooting wide open all the time it's never an issue anyways unless the sight of dust in a lens makes you cry.

The 500/4 is something I'd like to replace my 80-400G with because I find that I'm at 400mm 90% of the time and want more reach anyways, but the reality is I can't justify that expense for a hobby at which I make $0 from right now :rofl: I follow a guy on Flickr by the name of Kristofer Rowe and his photos have me lusting that lens (https://www.flickr.com/photos/coastalconn).

Just an odd-ball suggestion but what about the Sigma 150-600 Sport? What type of light are you in most of the time?

At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with the 300 2.8. Depending on how close you get, the 200 2.0 might be worth a look at also.

How much did you spend on the C/Y? I had one back when I had my 20D but I eventually sold it and recently thought about picking it up again. I think I still have my C/Y-EOS adapters too.

200 2.0 is actually one of two of the big primes that I haven't ever shot with (200 2.0, 800mm 5.6) and have always liked, but I can't justify the cost when the 70-200 VRII is SOOOOO good at 200mm and the extra stop doesn't affect me all that much for what I'm shooting now (the picture of the jet truck that I posted earlier this month was with the 70-200), I'd like to own one, but more as a novelty, and as an argument in favour of it, it would still be a 300mm 2.8 with a 1.4 TC.

I've never been overly impressed with the Sigma super zoom series. I've seen some ok results from it, but nothing that made me really drool over one.

The 500mm F/4.0 is a fantastic lens, and due to recent realizations of regrets from previous sales of gear, I know I won't ever sell it...lol

Another one to look at on the long end that is ridiculous is the 400mm 2.8, I regret selling that one too.

My first big lens when I moved up from the 70-200 VR1 was the 300mm 2.8 VR1 (the last version of it with the nano coat), and it's also high up in the list of things I regret selling, but at the time I, like you, couldn't justify having so much money tied up in what is essentially a hobby (it generates SOME income, but not even enough to cover the cost of all the gear I keep buying), so it got sold when I went up to the 400mm 2.8, which got sold after race city closed.

haha, at one point or another yes, I've played with most of them. I briefly got to try out Canon's 800mm 5.6 for a few minutes a few years back too, but not enough to even have an opinion of it.

The 600mm F/4 was a great one to shoot with. But I liked borrowing it more than I would like paying for it :P this one is from the 600mm.

My 200mm f2 VR is the one lens I really miss since ditching DSLR's.

I've owned the 200 f2 VRI, 300 2.8 VRI (nano) and 400 2.8 VRII and they're all just fucking amazing. No point in debating quality between them, it's just what focal length you need. The 200/2 works beautifully with the 1.4 TC too ;)

What's the difference between the VRI and VRII 300 2.8?

All VRII's had the nano coat (only the last VRI's did) and a newer generation VR, I think other than that they're the same and that goes for most of the VRI to VRII telephotos.

Oh and Earl I tried the wide angle adapter and it sucks balls :rofl:

One stop better VR performance, the M/A switch, and the "II" version automatically detects a tripod when using VR. Identical optics and Nano Coating, according to Nikon. I'd probably grab the VR1 if you're looking used :)

I think my rental experience with one of those had given me an unfairly poor opinion of them. It was TCS's rental, it was the old version and more used up than your average porn star...i suppose I could give that one a go. One thing I have noticed with sigma is the have an essentially non-existent resale value, so I'd have to go used.

Everything I've read and seen online about their new sport version is pretty spectacular. Only complaint seems to be that it's heavy. But if you're at the track with a monopod, that point seems irrelevant.

It would be at the top of my list honestly but 400mm doesn't seem long enough.

This was just a day hike. There is a "trail" that you can do around the entire ridgeline but that would be a two-day at least. The first bit was incredibly steep, 0.5km at 30% grade, flattened out a bit then 1 km of 21% grade....but once up on the ridge it was amazing and got really lucky with the weather too. Looking forward to more hikes :thumbsup:

received the 50mm 1.2 Ai-S on Friday, sold it yesterday. always wanted to try one, great lens, awesome at f/2 but I already have the Contax and Voigtlander that are both great at f/2

Sunrise or Sunset up in Inkpots, Babel Tower and Fairview Mountain are on my bucket list this season if you guys are up for it.
