Looks like the 5th Ave Lane reversal experiment will begin on May 19. http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation/Roads/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-management/Lane-reversals/Lane-reversal-5-Avenue.aspx

I was hoping that you would be able to take 9th street north onto the bridge and use the furthest most left lane to exit downtown but it looks as if that is not the case. Oh well, should ease up come congestion heading towards bow trail which won't move once it gets close to crowchild anyways.

Didn't know about this, thanks! Very cool, hopefully it will ease traffic on 4th and 6th ave.

Very interesting. Traffic leaving downtown in that area is a mess every single day, so hopefully this helps.

Hoped that they'd fix those turn lanes from NB 8th to WB 4th so that the 2 right most turn lanes can turn concurrently onto the 2 lanes on 4th that lead to the Louise Bridge. Still so many idiots who can't manage it properly.

Interesting wonder if it will make a difference

it's only a stop gap measure. What they really need to fix are the ctrain crossings between 4,5,6 that's what is holding up the traffic.

Right, and it'll cost an insane amount but at least it would improve both Transit & Roads. It's sort of insane how far down the road this is in the citys plans atm.

Lane reversal trial... While I like the concept the drivers in this city are to incompetent to use them.

At least once a week I have some imbecile (Usually a taxi) attempt to turn into me or someone else on the road because they aren't aware of the reversal. 4th to Center St south is particularly bad for this. Full on brake lockups. Just a matter of time until they take out my front end imo.

Almost as bad is a clueless idiot who just straight up ignores the reversal coming south down center street to get past traffic like they are smarter than everyone else. I see those a couple times a month as well. Almost as many who think they can wait till to turn left against 3 lanes of Northbound traffic.

I think this will cause major headaches as a short term trial.

It is promising to see the city exploring solutions to problems that doesn't involve excessive spending.

So now there are 3 roads going west (4th, 5th, 6th) and one going east (9th)?

As far as I'm concerned, the main problem isn't the lack of roads going west, it's that it all bottlenecks on Bow Trail.

It's no good. no one should take it.

Bow actually doesn't bottle neck. It's the CTrain running parallel to 9th street that fucks everything up getting past that point. It's free flowing to bow and crowchild south with crowchild north being the only bottleneck on the west side. It can handle more traffic coming from the core.

5th still goes east doesn't it? I thought it was only a few lanes that get reversed. Regardless there are a ton of options heading east out of downtown. 9th, Memorial, 3rd. I actually rarely use 5th to head east because of the busses making 4 lane changes by the petro Canada building bottlenecking it to shit, which is why I think 5th was chosen as a lane reversal to have less traffic feeding to that block. At least that's what I would do in sim city to fix traffic and force people on other roads.

Yeah, it is only 2 of 5. I suppose this concept is more difficult for people to understand than I thought

Actually since I noticed this yesterday while trying out the 5th reversal - they should've also allowed cars to turn onto 9th/10th from 5th to provide another alternate to the Louise bridge at minimal cost.

Otherwise not many people using it yesterday at 5 - I assume it should pick up. I also can't tell if I am allowed to make the right turn from 5th WB to 8th NB on a red LOL.

Pretty sure this was caused in some way by the lane reversal

Hahaha I know the girl who hit that Porsche. She was turning left on a yellow and went head on. She isn't very smart and it probably wasn't caused by the reversal.

Whoopsie.

Looks like this will be permanent starting October 15th. It is going to stretch to 5th street though. The reversal will be all times outside of morning rush hour making 5th ave a two way street. How you will get into mcdougal is a great question to start

just wait till the 4 car trains start in november and there isn't enough room for the trains to be sitting where they currently wait for the signal, they will be blocking intersections for sure.
