Jeebus, stole 74 vehicles in a pretty short amount of time...

City police say they’ve taken a 30% bite out of vehicle thefts by busting an organized gang of car rustlers.

From an investigation that began in February, police have laid 168 charges against 10 suspects while recovering 74 stolen vehicles worth $1.9 million, said Staff Sgt. Kristie Verheul.

But while the arrests have reduced the number of vehicle thefts by nearly 40 a week, Verheul said the problem persists.

“It’s a significant drop ... but this is really scratching the surface — 80 vehicles stolen a week is still significant,” she said.

Police believe the group had begun stealing vehicles, bartering for drugs and re-selling the cars, trucks, SUVs, skid steer loaders, ATVs and snowmobiles since December, when the force noticed a dramatic spike in such thefts.

They were stolen from dealerships, driveways, rental agencies and industrial areas, said Verheul.

“Our top targets were actually coordinating the efforts of a number offenders,” she said.

“They were used to commit other crimes or sold for profit.”

The suspects, she said, zeroed in on some pricey wheels, notably a 1970 Mustang worth $40,000 and new trucks priced at $80,000.

Most of the seized vehicles have been returned to their owners undamaged, due partly to the way they were stolen, she said.

“One-third of the stolen vehicles were taken by using their own keys,” said Verheul.

Police also seized drugs, $3,500 in cash, $12,700 worth of other stolen good, a rifle and handgun.

Among those charged were Tyler Roger Scott, 30, who’s charged with 19 counts of breaching a court order, possession of the proceeds of crime and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Bandi Lynn Courterielle, 25 is charged with various theft offences as is Jason Howard Little, 31, who’s also accused of property damage over $5,000.

Police are still seeking Tyler Timothy John, 34, who’s wanted on theft charges.

All the suspects are Calgarians.

Ya not surprised this was a large oraganized theft ring. I know 3 guys that had their Ford Diesels stolen in the last 3 months from all different ends of the city.

I am honestly surprised how easy it is to steal new vehicles with all the technology on them these days.

Looks like they have keys. Whether they are the original keys or copies I don't know.

By the sounds of things, they were stealing the keys, in that case your car is only as safe as you keep your keys.

I'm pretty sure that's the Tyler Scott I used to know, and this doesn't surprise me in the least.

Pretty simple when the keys are left in a running vehicle. It amazes me at how many people do that.

One of the other popular events is when a residence is B & E'd and the keys to the vehicle are taken from the home and the vehicle is sitting outside.

Haha I had the same comparison in my head when I read about it.

Why people leave a vehicle, running or not, with keys in it is beyond me. I guess the next comparable thing is leaving vehicle keys just inside of the front or rear door of one's home - something that probably most of us do and then leave that door unlocked while you're elsewhere in your home or outside chatting with the neighbors, easy enough for a brazen thief to come in and swipe a few keys. Sounds like these four were opportunists for the most part and it appears there's many, many vehicle owners out there that were more than happy to oblige them.

I take it you don't warm up your vehicle in the winter? Thats ok, hundreds of thousands of other people do. It's extrmemly common place to leave a vehicle running with keys it in.

and it's extremely common to have your cars stolen that way, but cold interior? Can't have that.

My ford has the keypad on the side. Perfect for having the car running with the doors locked.

A quick smash of the window defeats that lock fairly quick. :)

The proper way to warm your car is with a good remote starter. The one we had, even if someone broke into the car, the car shuts off as soon as you press on the brakes if there's no key detected, which is required to put the car into drive.

Mine works the same way. I don't know if I can live without a car starter now

I warm up my truck on high idle in the wintertime while I lavishly enjoy a hot cup of coffee inside, and I leave my truck running if I'm in and out of a store, especially when I have to go buy cat food.

Just pave your lawn in Martindale, and blend right in.

I'm 99% sure that's how ALL remote starters work.
