Recap of my last 4 winter cars...

Part 1 (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=212211) - Sold because it wasn't fast enough.

Part 2 (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=282712) - One of my favorite cars for winter and summer, lasted 2 winters and 1 summer, sold because I was tired of losing to civics in the winter.

Part 3 (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=341126) - Was so much fun in winter, but just didn't have the room to carry anything. Not the greatest daily driver with a family in tow.

Part 4 (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?threadid=359682) - The old man car. Really loved the car, but need another seat in the back.

The CLS reminded me how much I missed smaller cars. Saw the A45 last year, and too bad it's not available here, because I love hot hatches. This is as close as I'm going to get in a Benz. 2015 GLA45 AMG. It's a SUV, registered as a station wagon, that looks like a hatchback.

I went a little overboard on options. Checked every box except for distronic radar cruise control. The wing is so silly on this thing, but the whole car itself is silly. So ya, it's basically a really overpriced Golf R/RS3 here with a tad more power. But oh those seats, they're so snug and holds you so well in the corners.

360hp in a 3500lb car, it's a boat load of fun. ESP off, throw it in corners, it just oversteers a little and powers through curves. Hilarious that MB made this car, it's so not MB, and one of the more fun AMG's I've owned. Shift farts are hilariously loud, I let ScCab take it for a rip to help me break it in, and you can hear the shifts 2 blocks away. I was worried the optional AMG suspension was too stiff based on reviews, but I realized those reviewers are pussies. The car is very comfortable over bumps. You want stiff? Drive a BS haha.

It's like AMG accidently made a little rally car wannabe. So hilarious. Anyways, some pics from delivery, and removing the roof box till I actually need it. Will update in a few months once I have winters on it and we see some snow!

Must be the angle, it was aligned on the drivers side. It's 400L, no clue if that's a lot or not. It ain't small, had to haul that thing into the basement, what a PITA.

Putting it in the basement? Devise a hanger in the ceiling of your garage! That's what I did with mine.

Mine is 15 cubic ft., which is slightly over 400L so that's a small one for an SUV.

This car is strange but I am really digging it. Does this car use the same AWD system as the CLA?

rage2
07-04-2015, 08:54 AM
Ya, it drives similar to the CLA45 except much more compliant over bumps. It's a haldex FWD based system, but with ESP set to sport or off, it locks power distribution 50/50. There's no understeer anywhere, unless you enter a corner too hot, which isn't the car's fault. It's just happy rotating even if you punch it out of an apex.

It was all because of the lack of Keyless Go. Tons of orders, including mine, were cancelled and there was a stockpile of allocations. Once they added it to the order banks, they all sold. Lone star says they're sold out till December builds.

It wasn't even available until May builds. I think I'm one of the first GLA45s in Canada to get Keyless Go.

I haven't seen the 2016 order guide yet, but I'll bet it gets bundled in the Premium package.

Kind of off topic but why do some cars have their brakes in front and others behind the hub? I guess it's not even brand specific because the BS has it behind while the GLA has it in front.

Suspension design/clearance, brake cooling ducting, lots of different reasons. There's no single reason for it. The only place you wont see a caliper is on the bottom, as that would collect a lot of debris.

And thanks!

Yes, and it's fucking annoying. I have to remember what car I'm driving (or look at the stupid light) whenever I get gas. The B is opposite too (as is the same platform CLA), totally look like a noob when I forget to check. All my cars had the fuel door on the passenger side so I haven't had to check in what feels like a decade. First world problems.

Just noticed this... for someone that likes their car black on black, the front tint is surprisingly light. I am guessing you usually get 20 rear and 50 on front?

Depending on how high your garage is another open is to put a bar on your wall and then clamp your cargo box down to that so it's sideways.

When they first announced the GLA I thought "great another car pretending to be an SuV"but after seeing them in person it's grown on me and still seems much more car like and really doesn't sit all that high. Looks like it'll be getting 380hp for next year too as a direct shot at Audi's RS3

Saw one for the first time over the weekend and thought it looked good. The proportions are much better in real life than they appear in most pictures. However, the one i saw was silver and had an awful looking vinyl stripe package on the side. Definitely did not help the rice factor.

A big thanks to Rage2 for letting me help break in his new winter beater this Friday  .

As requested ill posts up a few lines on what I thought of the experience.

First things first as far as overall dimensions of the car it just screams bloated Golf to me. Which is a GREAT thing. Its not a crossover, its a beefed up car.

This is particularly true of the passenger areas of the car both the front ( AMG Sport Seats  ) as well as the back seats were very comfortable though I think for a road trip vehicle the AMG seats might be a bit stiff in the long term. For a city car though they were great, and i think the form 100% outweighs any back pain i might suffer from them in a trip to Vancouver. Though i am not the biggest guy i had no issues sitting behind Rage in his full comfortable seating position. This is a good time to mention i found the suspension in no way harsh. This was coming back to back from driving my car which has been reviewed as "splashy". So don't have any worries about checking that box on the order sheet if it intrigues you.

Trunk space is good, but not great. About the exact dimensions of a Mk5 or higher GTI trunk ( ever since they put real suspension in the back). It would definitely get tight on a camping trip etc. with kids or a couple extra friends with their stuff. But then again i made such trips work in my golf so who knows haha.

Onto how it drove.

I was quite blown away, this car doesn't really weigh any more than the CLA and it shows. Its a car, no doubt about it. regardless of my chirping Rage about his new "Race Truck". Throttle response isn't fantastic, but livable above 3000 rpms. Which is the only place this car should be driven in all honesty. It does have turbo lag, no ifs about it. But with 350 bhp form a 2L engine i don't know why it is even worth mentioning. The car is fast, but i found it very controlled ( not that i pushed it 100%). Not the same as some AMG's i have driven which i swear were trying to kill me at every stab of the throttle. I found myself sailing through the gears and speedo without even realizing it. The car definitely inspires a ton of confidence. The AMG sport exhaust is also quite the spectacle. Very loud, and the shift farts are EXTREMELY harsh. Maybe to much so for my tastes, i would need more time dailying one to really decide. It is very unique for a factory exhaust system. Fortunately if you don't want them for a given drive they turn off which a push of a button. You still get the great rush of the exhaust, with a bit of the bark dialed out.

The AMG AWD system really is a top notch implementation. I drove it in the full sport setting the entire time with the center diff already dialed straight into 50% from the start from what Rage tells me. On the street the grip was tenacious and trying a few tight figure 8's in a parking lot you can really see how the system works. This isn't your standard Subaru or Audi AWD.

My experience with DCT's is fairly limited aside from VW DSG cars but this was very good. The car shifted with no hesitation or nonsense, just immediacy and no break in power delivery. People who have been scared off by old flappy paddle systems like the SMG3 or otherwise should rest easily knowing the technology has matured. On starts it wasn't as smooth as my bmw slushbox but that is to be expected.

Overall i think the car checks all of the boxes i wanted it to ( the wife might disagree on a few points like the fact that its a hatchback and doesnt come in a cabriolet :nut: ). Since its mean it always comes back to the 2, and oddly how so many people have compared the CLA / A to the 2.

Would i trade my M235i in for the GLA45?
No.

But that's because they are far to different of vehicles to be compared and my driving the GLA definitely makes me question some of the comparos i have read between this *45 line of vehicles and the 2 series. At least in its RWD guise.

Would i love to have the GLA45 sit in my garage next to the 2? Absolutely.

This car would be fantastic for when i need to move an extra person or 2 around the city. When i want an extra couple inches of ground clearance in the winter. Or when i want the confidence that when i take my car out in a snow storm that I am actually going to get home again. All without compromising on the amount of fun i have on a daily basis in my 2. Different fun is still fun!

Rage I wasnt sure if this was better posted in your new car thread or the GLA45 thread. Ill let you make the call if you want it moved.

And again, thanks for letting me take it out :D .

Mibz talked about the stiffness of the suspension too, think he had the same thoughts as you, it could be softer. My car was spec'd with the 20% stiffer AMG suspension. The standard suspension is a little more forgiving. I had to order the suspension to get the red brakes and the wing, which is more important because I'm a ricer.

I liked it. Its not back breaking, but it isnt comfortable either.

If i bought comfort over performance i would drive a 528i. ;)

I will note i mostly called the race seats stiff. i didn't think the suspension was to stiff.

07-13-2015, 10:27 AM
It's stiffer than it needs to be, that's my problem with it. I could live with it, but it's stiffer than pretty much every other "regular" car I've driven, as well as some aftermarket suspensions. It still feels like a modern suspension where it deals with bumps very well, I just think it's unnecessarily stiff.

That and the throttle response are my only two complaints. I disagree with "It should be driven over 3000 rpm at all times". It's not a Honda, but it needs to be driven like one.

But, again, neither of those things would dissuade me from buying one if I could afford it. Easily the best year-round daily commuter I've driven recently. Very easy to drive at the limit, very easy to cruise in.

It's similar. The Evo is better at trail brake corner entry, other than that, I'd say they're close in terms of handling trait. The Evo feels like it wants to rotate more, where as the GLA rotates but doesn't want to really kick the tail out even if you go way too fast into a corner (right Mibz? lol). Honestly, I think the GLA's handling brilliance is in the software, the torque vectoring (they call it Curve Assist) hides the suspension setups weaknesses, but it hides it well. I don't know if that's a good thing or not, because it's the same reason I don't enjoy driving the GTR. I haven't been able to turn off that torque vectoring yet. Even with traction control off, I can go balls out WOT out of a corner in the rain. Or it could be just the AWD system compensating. I'm not sure yet. Will need snow to really understand wtf it's doing.

The interior, no comparison. GLA is way more spacious, and much nicer interior, even if you don't option it as hardcore as I did.

Performance, the GLA45 will run circles around the Evo X. With that being said, if I didn't need to have space for family and crap, I'd probably choose the Evo X over the GLA45. I still love the Evo X, and find an excuse to test drive one yearly for the hell of it.

I have no idea what you're talking about ;)

But yeah, it GLA doesn't want to be sideways. I'm not sure if it's the AWD. The Cayenne was much easier to get sideways than the GLA, for sure, but it's got a heavy rear biased AWD system. Maybe the front wheels of the GLA are just pulling it out of the slide.

I dunno. Hard to say without knowing exactly when the nannies are kicking in and what they're doing. They don't make themselves obvious, but you know they're doing something. Every other car I've been in, you can hear/feel the brakes actuating to either stop a slide or pull the car into a corner. Maybe it's just a smoother system. :dunno:

Either way, it's fun. I'm not sure rage2 will be able to make it do whatever he wants, but what it can do is, IMO, enough to not be boring.

EDIT: I'm super curious about the "GLA will run circles around an Evo X" comment now. I would've assumed the much lighter Evo would be a lot easier to throw around.

EDIT 2: A GLA 45 weighs less than a loaded Evo X. I think. Hard to find numbers on GLA options.

Power. The GLA45 is much faster in a straight line. I'd argue the GLA45 also has as much, if not more grip than the Evo around corners as well. Even if it didn't, the power is pretty far apart.

Ignoring factory hp ratings, the stock Evo X puts out around 250-260whp to the ground, while the stock GLA45 puts out around 330-340whp to the ground.

Like you mentioned in your post, both cars weigh about the same, depending on options.

Rage, is your GLA a 2015? I see the 2016 CLA/GLA gets the updated engine from the A45 which is kind of dickish for those who bought early.

Did you cross shop the Macan or SQ5? Or just buy it cuz it's a Benz?

2015. I don't have any of the upgrades. Those will be available in November when the 2016's hit the dealers.

You guys are hilarious, but in this case, absolutely correct haha.

I wasn't even looking into this segment at all. I was looking at the E63 Wagon. When I saw the GLA45 in person, and realized it's more hatchback than a SUV, it popped up on my radar. After reading a couple reviews, I was sold. There's nothing else to cross shop against really. The Golf R is the closest competitor, but it's too small for my needs. I guess I cross shopped the X1, but glad I went with the GLA45 instead (my brother ended up with the X1 based on my shopping/testing).

Macan, SQ5, those are SUV's, not even on my list at all. The Macan was even less roomy than the GLA45 when I sat inside it.

I do keep sticking with Benz's because they're familiar, and they keep giving me loyalty incentives that makes lease rates better than the competition.

Liking the all black colour scheme a lot. Glad you didn't go with the hideous AMG graphics package.

Yea, no clue wtf they were thinking with that Edition 1 graphics package. On all the other cars it looks a lot nicer. Here's the A45 one, this is what the GLA45 E1 should've looked like:

Do you know if the hitch (for a bike attachment) is available for the AMG? This ticks all the boxes unless it only comes with the roof rack.

rage2

It does not. Unfortunately, the hitch is Euro only (along with that badass bike rack) and ONLY for the 250. It's not available here because it's a metric hitch that's completely useless for our imperial gear here. Also, the AMG has a lot more exhaust work under there and can't fit the hitch.

Still waiting for an aftermarket solution, those too are 250 only right now.
