Well, the s14 part out is complete. I did well on it, and got most of my money back. So, while i did pay a bunch of bills, etc...i also picked up a new project. I've always wanted an FD, so i found a very nice JDM unit and picked it up.

Plans are fairly simple for now. Drive for the summer, and then refresh the engine with a rotary aviation seal kit this winter. Stock twins will stay on, and as far as the power, it will remain mostly stock.

Stay tuned, ill update whenever i can afford to do the things i want to do (=

Domestics....cool?

All jokes aside, ive had a few domestics. Never really took to them. Have had rides in them, etc...just not interested. As i always say, to each their own.

I have had a few cool cars. I have always missed my FC. That car was fast for what it was. Her favourite thing to eat was mustangs ;)

From what i've felt when the twins work properly on this FD (chasing a sequential turbo issue at the moment) its very fast. Need to remove the UIM and go thru some of the solenoids. It seems to be MUCH better at night, which tells me that its probably a solenoid failing when its hot. Good thing i have the FSM and all of the testing procedures for it! :D

Hoping to pick up a core engine from a local importer for dirt cheap so that i can take it apart, salvage the electrical items/twins, and then do a rebuild to that keg while this one is still in. You never know what you get with these jdm ones, but the price is right. Even if i get 1 good rotor and one good housing, im a step ahead (=. The great thing about the Rotary aviation seals, is that, rather than shattering into a million pieces and wreaking havoc on the housings/rotors/turbos, they instead warp in the middle, dropping compression but saving everything else. Cant complain about the price either. A master rebuild kit with super seals is only 1500$ USD.

Excited.

how hard are rotory engines really to work on? Me and my buddy are going to be working on my fc when I finally get my ass in gear and get one and we plan on building a fresh engine to go in. Been looking for a rolling shell for a while now...since I sold mine I've wanted another one and i suppose same as last rx7 there's really never a good time to start the constant headache of having a rotary car haha.

he is very mechanically inclined just hasn't done anything other than piston engines. is it really that much harder to master??

sr20s14zenki
07-07-2015, 04:45 PM
Not that hard at all actually. Im fairly confident ill have no issues. Alot of the preparation seems to be the usual, observing proper clearances and general engine assembly practices (cleanliness, organization)

RHD doesnt bother me at all in a small car like this. people say passing on a divided hiway is a pain, but i can actually lean over practically to the left side and see around the cars.

All in all, my only issue now is keeping my left side of the car too close to the lines. Im getting better, more practise (=

Evan, is it true that rotary engines don't like new synthetic oils and you should stick with conventional dino oil?

sr20s14zenki
07-08-2015, 11:02 AM
The rotary does inject sump oil via the oil metering pump, so, back when synthetics were relatively new, they apparently used to leave deposits when burned. Apparently the newer formulations dont have that issue, which is why the Renesis is certified to be ok with synthetic oils conforming to the newer standards.

What some guys do is either straight premix and remove the OMP, and then run synthetic, OR convert the OMP to run out of a tank of 2 stroke oil, and again, run synthetic in the sump.

MAYBE a mild street port, nothing too agressive. Dont want to have to get a standalone at this point.

Yah, these are fairly easy to port, not much skill to it really. I saw another guy do a bridge port

Finally got around to pulling the engine. Compression test showed 70 psi on both rotors, and it sounds even. This hopefully means that the rotors and housings are in good shape at any rate.

Picked up a few little parts for it as well. Got a wicked deal on a powerFC, and a greddy SMIC. The greddy intercooler is apparently good to around just over 350 whp, which is where i should be on the stock twins anyways. AND i get to keep A/C with this intercooler. YAY!!!

Well, got her torn down, and im pleasantly surprised. I think i can get away with everything and just a new set of seals and gaskets. I will probably get the plates lapped, and see about cleaning up the rotor housings.

Rotors- within spec from preliminary measurements, no damage or foreplay with foreign objects

Irons- Less than .002 of wear in any direction, .0001 stepping wear from side seals, from what i can see

Rotor housings- Good shape, some chattering up top, but nowhere in the compression area. I think they will clean up nicely.

Have no pics of rotors yet as they are chilling in a bath of solvent

pics:

Side plates, show VERY little wear.

That one is a 3 rotor 20B (hence why he's offering to buy back the engine) but with that many issues it's a tough sell.

Evan how will you perform the port? CNC or hand tools? You should take a little video regardless.

Also, how much of the horsepower equation does the port job control? how much horsepower is that port good for assuming everything else is able to make / supply lets say 1000 hp?

Jeremy wants to take a look at if he can tool it to be cut with his cnc. Im more than happy to let him try, but i figure it may come down to hand porting. Its pretty simple actually. Spray tool makers dye around the port, let dry. Put template on port, scribe lines. Hog it out, transition it, smoothe as possible. Rotor housing is the same idea, but you need to keep the sleeve in mind. I gotta research that still.

Think of the porting on a rotary, more like a cam on a piston engine. By opening up the port, you A- allow more air and fuel in, but also, B-you change the intake event phasing to be earlier. Mine is a fairly mild street port, so it would be like a fairly mild cam. Most guys easily make around 400 hp or so on a street ported 13b with a single. Alot of the guys making 500+ hp seem to be bridge ported. Im not quite ready for a bridge port yet. I want to explore the limits of the mild increase of factory ports.

I just wish i could do some base lines without the port job, vs the port job, but that would involve tearing it down twice. No thanks (=

Housings just got back from Freelance, and i gotta say, they did a fantastic job. They look 10x better, and they also blast and ultrasonic clean them. For 150$ usd, i cant complain at all.

Decided that porting is a skill that maybe i should learn. I was feeling up to the challenge today and got started. Took me 2 hours to do the first secondary. Gotta get longer grinding stones to reach into the primary port, but i got the aperture done anyways.

Done the aperture on the secondary, still a bit of bowl work to do. Gasket matched the inlet.

Scored a link g4 PNP ecu for it as well. Thanks Nguyen@Autodream!

Plans have also changed, single turbo, borg warner SXE362.

So, need turbo, manifold, and clutch still.

Keep up the good work. Nice seeing a properly assembled rotary coming together!!!

Not really a car update, but, i got my new toy in. A lick of paint here and there and she will
be mint. Even after all these years, its still liquid smoothe, and dead on with its output. Then again, only 102 hours on it! Cant wait to tune my rx7 on it. My truck was the first vehicle on it in about 5 years. Look at my 6.0L power in all its glory

Im slacking BIGTIME. LOL. Between work and my Dyno, ive been too damn busy to get on it. Im slowly getting cleared up now tho. Gonna go get a housing from adam soon. Got a racing beat dual tip exhaust, and a single turbo manifold the other day. So, thats progress i guess. Parts left to get are a turbo, and a good clutch.

;)

Thanks for checking in dude. Hows yours?

Funny enough, regarding RB stuff.. I found an RX8 in the junkyard last week with a full RB system. Shit sounds sweeeeeet.

Not sure what clutch you plan on getting but Adam had some great prices for mine.

Did a bit more porting, finished the primaries. Fuck me i hope i didnt port too deep into the oil seal track. its only about half a mm. I was trying to clean up a "shelf" in the factory port, but i should have done it in the bowl, not the aperture. Oh well, lets see if it burns oil...

Started the exhaust porting, minimal effort so far, still need to taper up to sleeve, and grind in the bevel.

Evan, how many monies in parts has this engine build cost you?
Also can you ball park how many hours labour you have into the engine build so far?

You can get into a RX-7 for not a lot of money and rotary engines are pretty neat. I want to take on a new project next year.
