The blast was powerful enough that the shockwave knocked people over several kilometres away.

The Tianjin fire department got a call at 10:50 p.m. regarding a fire in stacked hazardous chemicals in the Rui Hai International Logistics facility, the Ministry of Public Security’s fire section said on its Weibo microblog account. The explosion happened at about 11:30 p.m. local time.

Holy hell.

The explosion actually happened outside of Tianjin. (approx 30 mins outside)
My wife is from there and her dad just went back yesterday.
Pretty crazy though!!!

Didn't it happen at something like 11:30 PM local time? I'm guessing just a light load of staff working in the area at the time. Put that shit in the middle of the day and it would have been much, much worse.

This is just how the Chinese take care of excess inventory in the economy. Watch for a market rally.

Now >100 people dead NOT including missing ~90 firefighters :(

The developers and residents living next to the facility had no idea it was used for haz mat.

Yeah and those are the "official" numbers so in all likelihood it's probably a lot more. You pretty much can't trust any news coming out of China in the first place. Not to mention apparently the chemical plant that exploded and was storing chemicals too close to residential areas is surprise surprise linked to high ranking party officials.

Was gonna say, China has a long standing tradition of hugely under-reporting death tolls in mass casualty incidents. Especially when the government is involved.

With Sodium Cyanide being stored there, im sure the actual death toll could even reach 1000 :(

They had other reports that of other chemicals stored there. One in particular (I can't remember what it was, but it sounded similar to cyanide, cyanose or something), they said reacts violently when exposed to water.... And it was suppose to rain the next day.

I don't know if anything came of it, though.
