I have a 80-series cruiser with the 1HD-T. Fairly light on mods, and intended user will be overlanding/expeditions.

I'm trying to decide between a less aggressive AT/MT Hybrid (ST MAXX) or a full-on MT. The FJ will see a good amount of pavement, but I will be doing some of the western canadian/american BDR's.

Also, the truck is stock height, but will eventually see an OME lift (probably 2.5"). I know 35's fit stock, but I don't want to ruin the driveability of the car. I would like the vehicle to be comfortable to drive over long trips (15,000km +). I would imagine a 285/75/16 ST Maxx would be the most conservative approach, but I've read that most wish they went 315.

thoughts?

Are you going to be buying winter tires? I'd hate to be running a pure M/T as a daily in winter.

I ran 285/75/16 on my 3rd Gen 4Runner with a 4" lift.

I have two vehicles I'll be driving before the FJ80, so I'm not too concerned about winter tires. I don't think I'm going to go STT Pro, as I don't plan to spend that much time in the mud.

Now I'm deciding betweeen 285 or 315 in a BFG KO2 or the Cooper ST Maxx.

I just put STT on my Tacoma this afternoon. They are LOUD.

Toyo Open Country AT2 or Nitto Grappler AT are my two choices for that vehicle.

I've always liked skinnier (stock width) tires on the big cruisers, plus it adds to the driveability with less rolling resistance. Both the Nitto and Toyo have good on road behavior to go with good off road performance.

The KO2's are wearing a lot better than their predecessor over time but I still can't endorse them.

I run the Toyo AT2 Extreme on my F350 and I will be buying another set when these wear out. Much quieter than my BFG Mud Terrains and seem to be relatively good in the winter. I've only had them in the mud a little but and they seem well mannered.

STT or STT Pro?

I would consider the Pro if I was mudding more, based on this review:

ST Maxx is supposed to be an extremely quiet true AT tire. I'll be grabbing a set today - 285/75/16 because I wanted to retain drive-ability and avoid rub:
