Earlier this year, the Calgary Board of Education replaced several regular bus stops with a handful of so-called "congregated bus stops" in a bid to balance their budgets.

Calgary Board of Education to reduce bus stops and routes
But Kim Hall says she's out thousands of dollars after she had to pull her twin boys off their bus route because the closest congregated bus stop is eight blocks away — one of only three in the entire community of Royal Oak.

Lisa Davis, head of the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils
Lisa Davis says the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils has been inundated with complaints. (CBC)

"They would be trudging through a field. It's crossing a main street which is busy with traffic, and then crossing a number of side streets," Hall said.

Hall will now drive the two sixth-graders and then pay for before-and-after school care.

First things first she literally lives in the middle of nowhere. And is upset about getting her kids to school? Oh noes i will have to drive them to school and pay for someone to watch them.

2nd of all she has 2 kids in grade 6. 12 year olds. 12. Who she says cannot cross a street or a field?

 wtf is wrong with people.

When I was in grade 6 I would ride my bike 5 km to school in the good times of the year.

Grade 7 I was walking 15 blocks to school in a third world country not knowing how to speak the local language.

I knew people in grade 6 who were doing VERY adult things in their free time. let alone crossing a street.

Oh it is stupid. People you know, can research homes before buying and see where the schools are. Maybe it would be best if the bus picked them up from home. Before and after school care also in Grade 6, I am pretty sure I was staying home alone before I was 12...

/rantonpussificationofsociety

Am i just out to lunch?

You nailed it.

She moves to the middle of butt-fuck-nowhere and then complains about both the lack of services provided to her and the expense when those services are less than perfectly tailored to her life (location, schedule, etc). On top of that, she's raising two sheltered, sure-to-be-winners if they can't walk 5 blocks and cross a street on their own at 12 yo.

I bet she complains that their participation medals aren't shiny enough too.

OT - where did you go to school for 7th grade? Third world? For realz?

It's the NDP's fault.

Seriously though, 2.4km is nothing. The CBE's actual distance limit is 5km, and our kid's stop is now 4.8km away, right at the limit. We drive him to and from, but that's the choice we made sending him to an inner city school where it's closer to where his dad lives.

This isn't a suburb problem though, even in inner city where kids are getting bussed, they're walking further because of the reduced number of stops. What I don't get is how does reducing stops save money? The pickup and drop off times haven't changed, so bus drivers aren't working any extra hours.

Come on Sam, the bus stop is just over there.

I'm pretty sure times have changed, and that you'll probably go to jail and they'll take the kids away if you did that today.

It's true. That's why Jr. high schools are now in playground zones too, because we're apparently raising a bunch of fucking retards.

I don't get it either, I am assuming many parents living near each other, perhaps car pool on different days, get the kids to walk together. Unless of course, there are the only two children going to school in royal oak. :nut:

Lived in a small town in Brazil for 2.5 years ( from right after grade 6 to start of grade 9). My dad was managing finances for a chemical plant down there.

Went to a local "international school" to learn the language, socialize, stay active, while simultaneously doing Alberta curriculum grades 7 and 8 through ADLC. Pretty tough couple years.

As far as Brazil goes the town was pretty safe ( though with the local drug trade at the time the state i was in was quoted to have more annual assassinations than Gaza). But there was still shit you got to see that no one wants to.

I am always skeptical of people who call south America "modernized". In some places sure. But get outside of the nice districts of the biggest cities and things go pretty downhill from there.

What's even more entertaining is that we all know that there's beyond members that fit the moulhd that everyone's making fun of including having a wife with a doo like that, but they'll remain silent out of fear.

Am i just out to lunch?

no you are just part of the minority that remembers times when people weren't pussies...the new generation is horrible.

If you're worried about how your kids get to school, try living near a school. That's not rocket science.

Living in Royal Oak is proof you don't love your children.

RO has an elementary and will have a middle school next year. Not sure where she takes her kids. The high school is in Arbour Lake and you can walk to it, biking to it is extremely easy.

Having talked to a certain CBE trustee, the #2 money-drainer in the CBE is busing.

I have been saying this for years. If you are going to procreate, get to neighborhoods with schools. Building new schools are a waste of tax payer's money.

You realize that it's impossible for every single family with kids to live beside a school right? There are a finite number of schools, and a finite number of houses near a school, even in *gasp* inner city.

Elementary schools and Jr high schools aren't close to each other either, so do you expect families to move when the kids have to change schools? What happens if you have 2 kids, and one goes to Jr high while the other is still in elementary?

I know you're half joking, but still wanted to point out the flaw in your argument.

Dude, CBE's utilization rate is in the high 80%s (basically this means that each grade can take in 2-3 more kids during the school year). Even if everybody could've afforded to live in an overpriced inner city shithole, the CBE would've had to build new schools.

This. Bought my place in suburbia years ago before I even had a thought of having kids. 4 blocks for 2 schools up to grade 9, biking distance to high school (or a 20 min walk). Luck of the draw haha.

And before anyone brings in the "inner city schools are empty", those are the ones with the longest wait list and lowest lottery chances.

To the contrary, we are very mindful in how we raise our children, and look for opportunities for them to gain confidence and independence in a supported manner.

I'd like to say I was a badass as a kid but as it turns out I only had to walk 1.2 km. I was in Grade 1 at the time though, and we did have to trudge through a field. Got my boot stuck in the mud there once.

Good times.

Not necessarily so, we're only 3 miles out from downtown and have CBE schools at all 3 levels within walking distance (under 1 mile) and there's no lottery at all in any of those schools.

Savings are likely coming from an hour or so of extra bus driver labor, as well as less gas from not driving around the neighborhood stopping and going.

I see where the savings are coming from :dunno:

We should have a poll on how people's kids get to school and whether they are "inner city" or suburban.

Do they have some sort of lease payment per stop with the city? I dont get how it can save anything, let alone 30%. Same kids, same destination. I doubt its that much less driving.

EDIT: I misunderstood the difference between "walking zone" and "designated school". Kids are not guaranteed entrance to their designated school. Kids within the walking zone are given first priority.

I think there are 3 levels of lottery.

Best chance) walking distance or walking zone with siblings

Second best) not in walking distance but siblings in school

Worst) in bus zone and no siblings.

The worst level is the one I would be in for the public school for my designated zone.

I think also to get into the lottery you have to wait outside the school with your sleeping bag or some shit like that on the day that it starts, i could be wrong.

Walking zone is less than 1km from school I think.

Not on the topic but how many of you also have problems getting their kids into fucking swimming lessons....god so frustrating.

Lottery is just that, a lottery. It used to be hand picked by the schools, so if you knew someone there you could increase your chances of getting in. They changed it to a pure lottery system after the lady in the 2nd post complained.

As for swimming, gymnastics and other lessons, you gotta be prepared. I'm on those registration pages like I'm going for Taylor Swift tickets on ticketmaster. Shit fills up FAST, sold out within seconds for the good time slots that doesn't impede on nap time haha.

Perhaps. If I dealt that way I'd have no family or friends left. And I've had a few kooky moments myself over the years... so it' a two way street.

Basically the person was frustrated that we weren't taking their parenting advice. The escalated to their threats of child services.... But it was just all just a knee jerk emotional reaction on their part.

If this had been a recurring thing, it'd be another matter, but this is the first time anything like this has happened.

All told I was pretty unhappy as it took up a lot of time for me to mediate this down.... But calm was ultimately re-established, the person is repentent, and has a clear understanding of what is and what is not ok.

Families.... Sigh.

Protip: Many Catholics allow non-Catholics, provided that you're ok with the school being Catholic. All that's required is that you play along.

Of course, it's just a matter of time before some atheist exploits this little opening, and complains about the child they enrolled into Catholic school being indoctrinated with religion....

All the schools in my area/planned for my area are under restricted enrolment meaning no non-catholics allowed. Apparently I would have to attend a course and go to church a few times before getting that baptized certificate that allows me to register my kid in Catholic school. I have no problem with my kid getting exposed to the catholic stuff at school, it might be a bit awkward if she asks why we don't go to church though.

I never sensed any pressure or expectation.... It think the most important part is that you just play along.

There were some Catholic rituals and prayers in which participation was expected, but not necessarily active participation.

Personally I appreciated my kids being exposed to Catholicism.

We lived in Cougar Ridge when we were planning kids. Saw the writing on the wall for public schools up there so we moved to a zone near an elementary school. The before and after care sucks especially for kindergarten but until the CBE accepts that more couples both work than not and make a 7-6 school option we're stuck.

I had a lady lined up to drive my kids from the school to the dayhome (4 -5 blocks but crosses a busy street) and 3 days before school starts she bailed. So now our Grade 2/Kinder kids are going to try walking. I had to sign a form saying I allow them to be released alone but they didn't seem too concerned overall. This week I'll have to leave work before 3 to see how they manage.

I don't think that's what it means. It just means you're going to be waitlisted, pretty much what non-Catholic schools were doing prior to the lottery process.

We picked our inner city school 100% based on the availability of in-building before and after care. That's a huge thing for us.

Looking to move closer to it, right now about 2000m away from it. Would prefer to be ~500m.

Not sure which regular program "inner city" schools have huge problems with lotteries or waiting lists. I do know that's an issue with the specialized language programs, but honestly didn't know that was a thing with the normal stream. Maybe just my part of town is seeing half-empty schools? I don't know.

Agreed. The smaller class sizes (in most schools, but slowly disappearing) and the quality of education is superior to public schools IMO. Doesn't hurt to be exposed to Catholism, let the child figure it out for themselves. I have no problems letting my kids go to Catholic school, unless I had a daughter lol.

On an hourly basis teachers would be cheaper

I have two girls, 3 and 6 months. The 3 year old is proving to be quite the handful. Although she is very independent and bossy. I think Im going to have no problem when it comes around to boyfriend time.....fingers crossed.

It's not that they won't let your kid go into kindergarten, it's that they will have to go to a different school which is inconvenient for you. :dunno:

How can they be at capacity when it is the first point of entry into school? You're kidding me. :nut:

^^^^lol sorry I realize that sounded dumb. :english:
My kid isn't old enough for school yet.
But I was having this conversation with a neighbor who was concerned that their toddler wouldn't be able to get into the school that is within walking distance when the time comes for them to start kindergarten because of the lottery.

Basically, if you are inside the walking distance to the school and register on time, how could they put you in a lottery. Wouldn't you get priority over kids outside that zone? Since it is kindergarten and there would be a certain amount of spots allocated for kindergarten wouldn't you get first priority.

30 spots, 50 kids, do the math.

If you're within the walk zone, you're pretty much guaranteed entry. The only exception right now is Royal Oak where it's at capacity so they removed the walk zone and put everyone in a lottery. AFAIK, that is the only school this year that has hit capacity for the first criteria.

Edit - not 100% clear but it looks like Glamorgan and Willow Park both fall into group 1 overcapacity.

Look up the walk zone maps on the cbe site for your school. The link will show dead (cbe site blows) but plug the url into archive.org and it'll pull up the latest revision. Remember, just because you're walking distance in your opinion to your school doesn't mean it's within the actual walk zone dictated by CBE.

Apperently not, according to the CBE website :nut:

No siblings already there means group 2, which could be in the lottery.

Oh right. Forgot about the no siblings part. I'm not sure how many schools do lotteries for group 2. Don't think that info is published.

Obviously I get that part.
But if you have 30 spots, and 10 kids within walking, and 40 kids that you have to bus in, wouldn't it make sense that the 10 kids get in automatically. instead of sending those 10 kids somewhere else where you have to pay for transportation.

That's not how it's split. It's more like 30 spots, 50 kids within walking zone. 50 kids that can be bussed in. 10 of those in walking zone gets in because they have a sibling, the remaining 20 in walking zone and 15 bussed in kids with sibling gets lottery for the last 20 spots. That's the approx ratio, I believe each school has 60-100 spots for kindergarten.

That's how kids living across the street from the school end up getting bussed out to a far away school.

Retarded system. Just checked 1/2 of Hamptons isn't in Walk zone of local K-4.

On a related note, a friend of ours had the cops called on her today....

The kids were playing on a bikerack while mom chatted 20 feet away in a doorway..

Some busybody guy observed this and reported her to to the police.

Some friends had the CPS knocking on their door because their kids were playing in their back yard without an adult. I'm not even joking.

^ the people that make those calls should be charged. Maybe deter future retards from thinking they're the parent police.

You can get in shit for calling the police without a good reason. They should really just use that banhammer more often.

The fine is pretty huge.

This kind of shit is only going to get worse when people can text messages, pictures, or videos to 911...

Call the cop on the grandparents for letting their kids play with the phone unsupervised.

My kids walked to their middle schools (grade 4 to 8) on everything but the most shitty of days, which is a good 25/30 minutes from our house. When we were kids we walked to school along the highway for at least the same amount of time from grade 1 on...

Parents need to teach their kids how to deal with some shit rather than mollycollding the crap out of them!

To be fair, 2km is a pretty decent hike for elementary aged kids.

All of this will pretty much be a non-issue in another generation - hell, my Dad either rode a horse to school or took a horse drawn sleigh depending on the season. When their school district finally got busses, I can just imagine the coddling howls from the older generation.
