Debating on a winter beater for the upcoming winter and I want to keep it as cheap as possible.

So far I'm down to a 2000ish Civic or a 2004 Mazda 3.

something like these

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/calgary/2005-honda-civic-great-running-condition-amazing-on-gas/1103954959

What say beyond? I would like to keep it as cheap as possible.

How about a CR-V? I have a 2000 in great shape. Make a great winter ride!

Well I can't be picky, especially for the price range I'm looking at.
Wouldn't mind a CRV at all. Just need something to get me through the winter with good heat.

i regret getting a beater without heated seats; on the plus side it had a remote starter, 4x4, and came with new winter tires and brakes.

How much did you pay for your winter beater if you don't mind me asking?

I paid $4400 for it I think... But I've also done a few things like brand new battery and windshield.

I'm sick of it if you're interested? :D

Mines a 2000 CR-V, 219km, 5 speed, working A/C, heat, aftermarket CD with usb and aux, excellent body, good glass, tires are all season.

Just gave it a full service. timing belt, w/pump, valve adjust, tensioners etc...

only $3,000!

Past winter beaters for me included a 1998 Pathfinder for $1200 that even came with Blizzak DMV1s, a 1994 Impreza Wagon for $1000, a 2002 Subaru WRX stage 2 for $8400, a 2001 S/C Xterra for $4000, and a 1991 Honda Civic RT4WD for $3900. The Civic was a lot of fun and really cheap to drive and I know the guy who owns it in Edmonton now after the car has passed hands a few times. The Xterra and WRX were pretty pricey based on fuel consumption and premium fuel. The Impreza is and always will be a total shit box (it's for sale if anyone wants it), and the Pathfinder was good value for money.

Find a beater with winter tires, totally worth the effort, as it's insane to spend $800 on new tires for your beater.
Remote starter is a good plan too. Heated seats are nice, but no big deal to me.

That's not beater territory unless your kijiji skills are much better than mine.

Maxima and I35 are good vehicle. Here is a question. Why did you get AWD if you don't drive it in the winter?

Snagged a $1000 Audi A6 2.7T 6MT earlier this year. Already has X-Ice winters on it.

Have you considered a 2000-2004 Subaru Outback?

- AWD
- Heated seats
- Higher ride height
- Tons of storage space
- 4 wheel disc brakes

This is mine.

Just because I chose to go AWD doesn't have to mean it has to be winter driven.
I would just prefer not to spend the first nice day in spring looking for rock chips with a touch up pen.

I looked at used Subarus but in the $2000 - $5000 they're all thrashed and/or need head gaskets. I bought a manual 1.8t jetta wagon and never looked back.

Man, Kijiji is just wedged solid with junk lately. It's full of seedy people getting rid of totally unusable/destroyed cars for 2x the value.

Looked at a Civic that was so bad for rust I could reach in from the rear wheel well and unlock the back door.

I wouldn't recommend a Mazda3 personally. Mine wasnt fantastic. The automatic window wipers are incredibly horrible. The seats suck.

Afterwards I got a focus. Similar car but was stick, better seats and didn't have the stupid window wipers. But it was lowered and seemed unstable on the highway.

Got back into a truck and happy now.
Just be patient for a beater

Are mid 2000s Lexus sedans for 4 figures usually a good place to look or are they usually beaten to shit? (or just bad winter cars)

90s-mid00s Lexus' are probably the most reliable vehicles on the road. What were you looking at, LS, GS?

Why not just buy a Koenigsegg Agera? Good winter daily.
