This one's interesting as there could be a lot of things that happened. Reports of shoddy maintenance, it's a Russian plan (which almost guarantees shoddy maintenance), IS affiliate taking credit for shooting it down, talk of a bomb, talk of survivors (now debunked I think), eyewitness reports of plane coming down in flames, and some idiot Russian claiming it couldn't be anything but a missile (obviously he's never seen Mayday).

Place your bets! What brought down this plane?

My bet: Completely mechanical. Tail came off, plane disintegrated in mid air as the speed got too high as it was falling out of the sky.

My money is on a jet fighter pilot, who accidentally took the wrong drug before his bombing run flight.

Edit: The speculation already is fricking mind boggling.

Another source at Sharm el-Sheikh airport told Russian news agency Ria Novosti the plane had experienced "engine start failures several times over the past week," and that crew had flagged these issues to airport technicians

Yeah, because a bad start would cause the air frame to break apart mid-air.

We rule out a technical fault of the plane or a pilot error," Alexander Smirnov, deputy general director of Metrojet

Unhuh. They must have some impressive technology to determine that before anyone has even looked at the debris. Russian satellites FTW!

This is the more telltale here:

the plane has had problems in the past, noting it was out of commission for several months in 2001 after the underside of the rear fuselage slammed into the runway during a bad landing in Cairo.

Although a tail strike isn't totally unusual, for it to take "several months" to fix, means an insane amount of repairs. If they didn't keep up repetitive NDT'ing afterwards, it could easily be the cause.

Remote bomb or explosive pressure vessel failure - probably at rear bulkhead where a tail strike occurred some 15 years ago.

The second has happened on two occasions, and will happen again.

My money is also on a mid-air breakup. Tail came off due to faulty repair of previous tail strike. No missile at that altitude.

MH17 would disagree.

"The jet was cruising well above the maximum range of any surface-to-air missile that the jihadists are thought to possess. These are far less powerful than the vehicle-borne Buk system that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine last year."

It was an Airbus, so not a "Russian" plane. As for the maintenance, international carriers have much stricter standard for maintenance then domestic lines, so I think maintenance standards would be pretty high. No airline wants to get banned from flying into another countries' airspace due to poor maintenance. Not saying it isn't possible, but I don't think it's likely.

My bet is on the previous repair. Happened before. Second guess is a bomb...Egypt isn't exactly a safe place right now, have own ISIS problems, so anything could have happened with ISIS getting bombed by the Russians and such..

Nothing "International" about some of these carriers that have previously leased F-OHMP/EI-ETJ over it's 18½ year lifespan.

Plane is owned and maintained by Irish company to EU standard but leased to and operated by Russian airline.

I would bet its bad repair unless somebody lost control of another SAM in the region.

My money is on another bad repair from the tail strike. China Airlines comes to mind with the exact same thing...

i figured they needed a part from this one to fix MH370. Unfortunately when you beam parts from a plane when its in mid air these things tend to happen :dunno:
