View Full Version : Where can I get a 1 1/4 hitch mount snowboard rack?

I've called B&P Cycle and also Racks Unlimited, the only ones they know of are the Thule and Yakama which use their bike racks as a conversion for snowboards. Is there some company that makes a hitch mounted rack for boards and skis? This must exist.

I can't recall ever seeing a hitch mounted rack for skis. I would think they would be too tall.
I do however know they make roof racks, and the rear seats on a Veloster(tm) fold down, so you can fit a snowboard inside.

You are really fixated on using that hitch for something, it's unhealthy.

:dunno: If you drive a veloster we can't let you join the snowboard club because that's like the anti thesis of cool. On a serious note boards should go either inside or in a enclosed thule style shell. Otherwise you just get rock chips and salt all over your gear.

My girlfriend's skis are super short, she's under 5 feet tall. I don't mind putting everything inside the car but we often go with 4 of us and then can't fold the seats down to get 3 snowboards and 2 skis inside. I have a bike rack I use all the time, it's awesome, so I would really like to have a snowboard rack to pop in there as well. Maybe it could be a Kickstarter project.

Thanks for the coupon!

Mar, with four people, and skis or boards, plus boots, coats, and maybe a snack, you really should look into a roof rack and an enclosed box. My guess is that even if you got all the sticks onto some kind of hitch-rack, the rest of your gear would not fit.

Innovating is cool if you make a better mousetrap, but nobody is going to beat a path to your door when you are creating a worse solution than the one that already exists.

Also, is the Veloster seriously the largest vehicle in this group of four people? What do the otehrs drive, mopeds?

I bet the Hyundai dealer will sell you one for above MSRP if you call them up.

Or they'll have one in the wrong color.

Damn you guys are an evil bunch:D

Roof top cargo box is the only way unless you want your gear covered in dirt. They do make hitch mount carriers for skis and boards but imagine how much crap is going to get sprayed on them from the road.

Don't try and use logic on Mar, it's sure to fail.

What he should do, is try and rent a small trailer that will hold all the equipment. He could also haul mattresses if need be.

I drove my bike to Fernie and it didn't get dirty at all, though that wasn't winter. I have those plastic mud guards, would it still get that dirty? Should I not be transporting my bike in the winter neither?

It's hard to put a box on a roof that's all glass. It's like being in that car from Jurassic Park.

Hmm....I wonder if that might make a difference.

why don't you go to Mercedes and see if the smart car one fits. I know for a fact those guys would love to sell something for above MSRP.

Anyone else think the bigger problem is trying to put 4 people and associated ski gear into a veloster in the first place.

Mar you need a friend with a truck...

Like i said the multiple times, Mar cant be real. To even remotely think your gear will not get dirty in the winter because your bike stays clean in the summer is nuts. And to think plastic mud guards will do the trick is :banghead:

Is Mar really young?

I wonder if Mar knows that the sheet metal of the roof doesn't actually support any weight when you use a roof rack. Not sure why he thinks his big sunroof is relevant.

10 seconds of google-fu...

So are we allowed to say this wouldn't have happened if you bought a civic or a golf like we all told you to. My GTI was fine to take 4 people to a ski hill even with everything in the car :dunno: . It kind of sucked. But it worked.

It must be fully loaded then!

Because panoramic sunroof means there's zero metal on the roof of the car to attach a rack to

Thule has a guide on their website where you can select your year/make/model and it will recommend a kit for you. It includes the option for "glass roof" or "normal roof", which incidentally doesn't make a difference in the recommended kit. As killramos mentioned, the strength is in the roof pillars, not the roof skin.

Tons of people put their gear exposed in racks without a box. It's not really an issue. Surprise, outdoor sports gear gets dirty when you use it too.

This is helpful, thank you.
I grew up driving trucks that had the runner mounts attached directly to the roof, I've never used ones that hook into your door. My earlier point was that I can't put the runners on my roof because it's glass, which is a valid point.
