Another Star Trek where the Enterprise gets destroyed and never fires a shot.

Another Star Trek in which every other ship looks way cooler than the Enterprise:)

I love Star Trek, but this one looks pretty bad. Expectations are low for the Fast and the Furious version of Trek.

Ya, that's the concern.
They should have taken things down a few notches. Maybe something closer to Enterprise's "Carbon Creek"(awesome episode) that focuses on drama and humour.
From Carbon Creek:
Stron: This is the third time this week I've had to fix Mrs. Garrett's sink.
Mestral: Perhaps she enjoys your company.
Stron: It might be tolerable if her son didn't insist on calling me... Moe.
T'Mir: Why does he do that?
Stron: There is a comic actor known as a Stooge with that name. The boy believes we have similar hair.
Mestral: There is a resemblance.
------------------
Mestral: This antenna is inadequate. I believe I can use a waveform discriminator to enhance it.
T'Mir: It'll be safer to go after dark. Can't risk being followed.
Mestral: I need to go now. "I Love Lucy" is on tonight.

I loved way back in first contact when they all teamed up on the borg and the enterprise was by far the most bad ass ship they had. Still couldnt defeat the cube, but lets see some more epic federation fleet battles for christs sake

I agree they need to do something different. Like fleet vs fleet type shit. Strategies and politics, the old school stuff that goes into it...
Not even gonna bother to see this one until its out on TV. yeap. TV.

There are numerous problems with so called movie reviews, I could list them all, but meh.
My main interest in a movie is not what it is, but rather what it's not. That "not", is cliche and unoriginal.
For example, I despise just about anything from Cameron, and the like of main stream Hollywood. But love everything from the Coen brothers.
With that said, It's an opinion, and not fact.

But HATED by the majority of people. It's because it was used as a platform for neo-feminism that sony & critics jumped on board, and any critics that tarnished it, were labeled as misogynists or anti-feminists.
I'm not being insane about this either, it's actually true :nut:

I'm ready to hate on Star Trek because it seems like such a mismatch for Fast and Furious directing. I was responding to HiTempGuy saying the reviews are "SHIT" when clearly they aren't. The audiences like it, and the critics like it for the most part.

Lots don't. The F&F crowd type of people do, ie, this is sci-fi for the masses. Kind of like Transformers, everyone will watch a train-wreck, it doesn't in any way mean it is "good".

Hard core fans of Star Trek already know the new movies are for general public, hence less preachy, more action.

I went in there thinking, this might actually be like F&F because I knew who directed it. After I've seen the movie, I thought he did a great job and possibly, JJ Abrams had quite an influence Also. Did not feel like F&F (maybe some part) but mostly felt like the previous first 2 films Abrams directed. I think the fact that we all know Justin Lin directed it gives us the hesitation to see it, moreover, that it is not going to be as good as the first 2; but for me, it was. :)

Just got back.
I dunno. I've seen this movie 18 times before. Transformers/Avengers/JurassicPark/Superman/etc/etc/etc/etc
I wouldn't say I was bored. More like disinterested. You can only see so many of these flashy neon assault-your-senses movies before they are just routine.

I really enjoyed the cinematography and the eye candy aspect. If anything I felt let down that they didn't explore the subplot between Kirk and Spock more deeply. Without giving spoilers, the touching parts were well placed, but again, not explored as deeply as into the darkness. Though there were implied dark themes and overtones I felt like they played it a bit to safe.
I have always adored and admired star trek for the intellectual side of it. I hope they regain that sort of feel. This movie did set a few interesting points for the next movie though.
The whole retro nest egg parts were definitely forced. If I wasn't a ST fan, I would have felt like I understood the references and felt smart. Almost like they polled a bunch of bbt Dan's and asked them what throwbacks should be included. Since I am a ST fan I felt slightly beaten over the head.
Avx is definitely the way to go on this one. 3d was used really beautifully. In some parts I felt dizzy. Awesome.
My last comment would be the "tribute" to Anton. As in nonexistant. Then again they had wrapped fully when he died... So. There's that.
Overall I really enjoyed it; however, in the places that into the darkness captured my feels, this one fell short ever so slightly. Enough to be slightly bewildering.
Would I watch it again? Atleast once more in theatres for the spectacular visual journey. Maybe not for any other reason.

Nimoy passed before shooting started. Writing that in is simple. Nods to Anton's death is in the credits. That's all they can do given so close to release.
Pegg was right that the last trialer spoiled the twist at the end. I won't be as pissed if that trailer was not force fed by YouTube.
A good outing for sure. The cast started to gel. Karl Urban stole the show.
Given it only has global $90M weekend for a $185M movie. Chinese won't bail this one out since its going to release 2 months later. This could be last one we will see.

Went to see it on the weekend as well. Had my expectations set at "action movie" level and was not disappointed. I did enjoy the easter eggs for fans, and the story is actually reasonably compelling. It felt like more like an episode of the TV series with some extra 'beats and shouting' thrown in to fill out the extra hour. I liked that they tried to bring it back to a more optimistic future with more classic messages about teamwork and unity.
We're going to get a little break from the J.J. universe now while the new TV series comes in. Hopefully they slow it down again and get back to the great story telling that made Star Trek such a success.
