View Full Version : Non-Christians: Do you celebrate Christmas?

FixedGear

I'm curious what percentage of non-christians celebrate Christmas.

I'm a non-christian and I celebrate it - got a tree and everything!

Also, I know that a couple of my FOB Chinese friends celebrate it even though they aren't Christian.

I think you need a third option there, I'm not Christian but I get a tree, do gift exchange but I don't go to church or celebrate the true meaning of it

That's considered celebrating Christmas IMO.

I can't beleive that any non-christian would celebrate Christ's birth by attending church.

Yeah, me too. Not religious, but celebrate it. It's a good time to get family together, generally in good spirits. Plus now that I have a toddler who is beginning to understand the concept of events like Birthdays, Christmas, etc, it's taken on new usefulness to celebrate it.

I don't remember a lot from my childhood, but some of the memories I do have surround Christmas time.

Not only is it not Christ's birth, but the origin of Christmas is Pagan, and the festival was 12 days of drunken orgies. Yes, seriously.

I'm not religious at all and I celebrate. Ive never looked at it religiously. It's just a fun time to get together with friends and family.

I've never understood why people get offended either way. I know some people that get so worked up about the "happy holidays" thing. Who cares? If you want to participate, relax and enjoy your family... if you don't want to participate, then don't and enjoy the time off.

We should commercialize and celebrate all religious holidays. Only path to world peace.

Am atheist and do celebrate Christmas. It's Christmas, call it what it is.

I don't go all out with a tree and all the associated trimmings, but do enjoy the time off, and the time shared with family and friends during the "holiday's"...Gift exchange, and the commercialism of Christmas I am all about though haha...

Thanks for the few days off Baby Jesus!!

There's celebrating Christmas, and there's celebrating the commercialism that's called Christmas. 2 completely different things.

I used to do it, but it was purely to try to get laid with a Christian girl.

Celebrated Christmas from birth until around age 12, then stopped celebrating it for, of all things, religious reasons. Then started celebrating it when I had kids, even though I didn't want to. Now, the kids are all grown and we've scaled way back. No presents. A tree and some decorations. I really look forward to having the kids around for Xmas dinner, sit by the fire, drink scotch and fire up the volcanoe.
I do kinda miss the presents though.

Man, the people that don't celebrate "Christmas" are the people you sure know to avoid :nut:

It has very little (and has HAD very little) to do with being Christian for a long time. Sure, the religioulous people take it seriously, and good for them.

I'd say 95% of people I know view it as a nice end of year holiday to give gifts and spend time with friends and family. Why WOULDN'T you participate?

Why should a person be avoided if they choose to not celebrate Christmas? You don't know the real reasons so they shouldn't be judged.

Seriously though, the best part about Christmas is just spending lots of quality time with family, including those you might not normally see. Any excuse for this is worth "celebrating" IMO.

It's a major societal/cultural part of the year throughout a lot of the world :dunno:

It's kind of one of those things "good on you for not caring/not wanting to participate, but nobody gives a crap".

No different than myself and sports, I don't give a crap about sports, but I don't go around telling everyone that because WGAF?

And especially the whole "commercialism" aspect, everything nowadays (and forever) has been a way to suck money out of the general populations pocket, that is the way the world works. So its really a pointless argument to make against Christmas. Christmas (like many things) is what you make of it, I see very little benefit (both of the "principled stance" or "realistic stance") to not participating. :dunno: And I find it odd anyone would take that stance, unless there were religious issues.

I don't see myself going around telling people about it other than answering the question here. I didn't grow up with it so making it a part of my adult life seems pointless to me. :dunno:

We don't, but if we had some closer Asian friends that did, I would be all over it. Nothing wrong with experiencing different culture's traditions. The neighbour a few doors down brought over some sweets for Diwali a few years ago, I didn't care for the taste but I thought the idea was pretty damn cool.

I dont, but then again I dont know anybody that celebrates it. I dont know much about it, but if a close friend invited me to celebrate it with his family and friends, I would be all over that.

I am not religious, but do celebrate Christmas. Being from a latin country christmas is a big deal, I would even go to church if Im down there, just to spend time with my grandma. Christmas for me involves a lot of booze, gifts and quality time with family. Why would I want to break that tradition ? Yes I am not religious but I just keep my mouth shut and go with the flow.

I find it fascinating mow many folks get drunk for this holiday. Maybe it's my upbringing in a family of non-drinkers, but I just don't make that association at all. Could also be that we always need to travel somewhere on Christmas and the days around it. So we need folks able to drive. I might not have any more than one glass of wine with dinner, and I really enjoy getting drunk.

Honestly, more likely to get blasted on the 27th, 28th, 29th etc.

Been off since the 18th... been pretty drunk 4 of those days. I love Christmas! Great time with family/friends, but we stopped doing gifts except for kids.

As for the religious side, I'm an atheist, so no church for me. I just kinda assume most people under 35 are closet atheists and just pretends to be Christian when asked.

Census taker - "Oh hello sir, what are your religious beliefs?"
Closet atheist - "Definitely Protestant! Yeah, protestant!"
Census taker - "Good thing I don't have to ask you when the last time you went to church is"
Closet atheist - "Good thing I don't have to tell you 1992."

I have always celebrated Christmas. Families have always been Christian but have never been churchgoers. My grandmother was involved with a town church but that was mostly for community and something to do in my opinion. Went with her to a Christmas mass once ( she lives in a different province ) but again she mostly did that to show off the grandkid to her friends lol.

I identify as an Athiest/Agnostic personally. But that's more of a philosophy of how I approach the world imo. I certainly am not the type to be offended by someone celebrating a holiday.

My step-i laws on my wife's dads side are very catholic so I will occasionally attend church with them if I am visiting over a religious holiday ( xmas easter etc.). That is something that I do out of respect for them and their younger kids. I am visiting them this Christmas so I did Christmas mass on the evening of the 24th. Oddly enough her dad doesn't even identify as a catholic lol

Before that i hadn't set foot in a church in 4 years.

I feel like my situation really isn't that out of the ordinary these days.

Could I say I was raised a Christian? Considering both of my parents were raised with religious parents, my mum even did the full Sunday church thing every week, I would say there were Christian values imposed at some point. We celebrated normal Christian/Canadian ( yes I feel like Canada is a Christian nation, though one which is tolerant of everyone's wishes and beliefs ) holidays like Christmas and easter. Though always in a fairly non religious fashion.

I celebrate because it is a personal tradition and a ton of fun. Its an excuse to break out of the monotony of modern life and spend time with friends and family around a theme. Nothing wrong with that at all imo.

Agree, that's a pretty typical situation and outlook. Although I do have to nitpick and say that atheist and agnostic aren't terribly close.

Close enough that I can relate to both:)

I identify myself as Atheist, with a pinch of Agnosticism. With that said, I'm in no way referring to Agnosticism to the typical human created Gods.

As for Christmas, I still say Merry Christmas, and enjoy the get togethers, but church is out of the question. There are also no adult gifts, and only minimal gifts for the kids.
