Gonna try to home gym out over going to the Y and I am interested in acquiring a power rack. They range all over the place from 300 to 1500 for basic racks with no cables.

Anyone have setup at home? Pros cons?

Half rack or full. Bar, bench and weights. If going to basement get thick horse stall mats from
UFA and can drop your weights all day.

Kijiji specials never pay retail. Good luck.

I have this: http://www.fitnessdepot.ca/C11FCA690367/strength/strength-equipment/functional-trainer-with-power-rack-nlftpr150.html

And it's awesome. I use it every day. The 150lb weight stacks move smoothly with no undue frictional resistance. The unit feels solid and secure. It holds my 202lb ass when chinning. The most I've had on the safety spotter chains was 395lbs, but it held without issue.

If you've got $2k to spend, this is a good way to spend it.

Not the cheapest option but getting a custom welded power rack set up is the way to go if you need specific dimensions (example height for the basement). He has done a lot of local gyms as well as home lifting set ups.

what exercises are you planning to do on your power rack, squats?

I have something like this that I bought from Fitness Depot 2 years ago
http://www.fitnessdepot.ca/C11FCA690367/strength/strength-equipment/power-racks-smith-machines.html

then an olympic weight set
http://www.fitnessdepot.ca/C11FCA690367/strength/weight-plates/sets-packages-bundles.html

I use them to squat (being a wussy right now squatting only 165lbs but hoping to go back doing 205 or 225 again soon) and pull ups as well.

Pros are that I work out every day, now that we also bought a treadmill our gym is pretty much complete now.

+1 on stall mats too.

Try ercanada or bellsofsteel. I got some things from both and was able to have mike from ercanada deliver it to my house.

Got this and I like it.

I spent about 2.6k for my full setup with weights, bench, bar, and some other things the wife wanted

ER Canada is also another solid choice. We have one of their powerlifting bars and some belts. Good prices for the product quality.

These are good as long as you aren't moving heavy weight. It's thin gauge steel and can only really support around 315lbs.

Thats the one but both Er Canada and Bells of Steel sold out and wont have any until March. And although they may source from the above mentioned guys, you gotta pay shipping on top of that.

Decided to go with the commercial unit as it has the integrated plate storage. Those storage towers alone run several hundred so I figure its worth it

how do you guys do working out from home?? i like the setup A790 posted, but afraid the focus might slide while working out from home. not sure i have enough room either but curious what you guys have to say.

I would venture to guess about 90% of people can't do it. Or at least can't do it on a regular basis.

I've had a complete 500 lb Olympic set of weights, plus dumbbells up to 105's, a squat cage with high and low pulley, and separate incline/decline bench since '95. I've had it sit for years and have also worked out regularly for as long as 2-3 years straight. I'm currently in workout mode right now. When I'm doing it, it's great. But I've also enjoyed going to the gym regularly. It just takes more time. a good hour and a half to two hours, as opposed to being able to have a good intense one hour workout at home. I also have an elliptical for cardio which is good.

I love being able to workout at home at this time of the year. I can't STAND going to the gym between New Years and February/March.

Btw, my setup is not expensive or pretty. and my workout room is the garage with shit all over the place. But it works.

i work out 40-50min every day, love it.
sometimes i workout in the morning at 5am before work, but lately because i'm busy i workout in the evening after 7pm.

have a laptop and tv in the basement where i watch/listen to a show while doing cardio or weights.

i watched the whole breaking bad series by working out every morning from october-december, so i'm catching up TV shows while getting fit

Mostly Im just tired of waiting for a bench to open up, getting sick from excess exposure to germs, bros dropping weights excessively etc. And yea commuting to my gym takes up time. So I'm looking forward to having extra time :)

Like people have said, definitely check out Kijiji. Got my full cage, lat attachment, and 300lbs of Olympic weights for $500. The cage alone was about 7 or 800 brand new.

I had a good set up at home but I find myself more motivated when I'm at the gym. It's a personal thing but I prefer working out at the gym.

I mean if you've never really lifted before, the first few months are quite addicting haha noob gains and you find yourself just stacking the weights, filming yourself, updating your bros, talking shit, pound for pound look how strong I am etc. However like all things you plateau at some point but you are still motivated as hell to breakthrough so you switch it up a bit, do more research and keep going. I found myself to break through the first plateau but when I encountered the second, I basically said fuck it. Shit's heavy now and started making all the excuses in the world etc. I would go months without lifting and then one day jump right back in. Do it for a bit and then give up again. I did this for about 5-6 years on and off.

And now after moving into a condo I gave all my shit away. I don't even lift anymore.

Good luck on your journey. Stay strong.

hardest part of working out at home is how expensive the weights get. I can do light to medium weights at home but for heavy sets i have to go in to the the gym.

:werd: I limit myself to body weight workouts at home (eg. p90x-type where you use small weights in a positive manner).

I'm pushing around weight at the gym to not make worth filling up the basement with gear - plus its nice to not always workout at home.

I've always bought my weights used. Can easily get Olympics for around .50/lb. I have 6-45lb plates, plus two each of 35,25,10,and 5.

For my dumbbells I have 24-10lb standard weight plates: (paid less than .30/lb)

105's Can do a 125lb
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/CalgaryDave/20160109_132134_zpsmqbdhzi5.jpg

I enjoy doing both, working out at home, and also a gym membership so I can go to the gym when I want.

Anyone know of a good place for horse stall mats? Anything online says min order 5 units...

EDIT: nvm, fitness depot has 4x6' 3/4inch thick mats for $40
