So I had a bulkhead built and installed to hide my projector bar about a year ago and just last week I noticed some huge cracks between the bulkhead and the walls its connected to.
On the bottom of the bulkhead the drywall seems to all be cracked too. Normally I wouldn't worry as I know wood will shrink but not to this extent. I can literally stick a toonie in between the cracks. Before I call up the contractor that did this I just want to be informed. Do I need to worry about this?

Structurally, no. But the contractor did a terrible job and it should not have done that.

I have no knowledge as to whether this constitutes a major issue or not.

But man, based on the title, I was expecting a totally different post. I once found hash oil in a Mustang I purchased. :)

Nice. No drywall tape used. That's like 50 cents savings right there.

The bottom of the bulk head has hairline cracks in it as well. I found small crumbs on the floor underneath it and that's when I noticed this.
Glad its not structural but man is that ever a sore sight to look at

When i say structural please know i mean its not "Your house will fall down" structural. But it obviously moved and the bulkhead or anything attached to it could further move.

Got any pics before it was drywalled? We can try to help you determine if it's the box that's not anchored properly or just a lazy drywall mudding job. Amazed it would last as long as it did with just drywall mud in there.

unfortunately I dont have any before pics, not very knowledgeable about this stuff
does it look serious enough to tear out all the drywall to get pictures?

Any self respecting contractor will cut back the drywall on the bulkhead enough to see how it was built and repair from there.

Cutting back the drywall on bulkhead isn't going to add much to the overall repair and it's necessary but I assume you're not doing it yourself so I would just wait.

PM'd you Ben.

No, you don't have to worry about it being structural. That whole bulkhead iirc is made from 3/4" MDF and is nailed together. I am pretty sure it was already mudded at the wall when I took over there, but I can bring over a tub of mud and some fiber glass tape and fix that up over the next few days.
