LOL...that's nothing. You should see some of the carpets we pull out. The real lovely ones are those in the homes of the 70's that put it around the ensuite toilet!! Yours is fine. I might try to sell it on kijiji! ;)

Tiling starts tomorrow....

Rage, are you going all tiles on main?

Gotta see the progress on this.

rage2

Just the main floor for now. I prefer carpet tbh but I'll see how I like the main floor then decide what to do upstairs.

I tell ya tho, disconnecting the home theater setup and labeling it all is a massive pita. Hope it all works when I put it back together haha.

Love to see how it matches up with existing tiles in the entrance and kitchen. Definitely easier to clean with young kids.

rage2

Kacz Kids only had black ones when I picked them up. The piece of wood that it's attached to is white tho, although I couldn't find white Velcro either to hold it up to the railings.

We went with a light hardwood look, I've photoshopped as much as I can and think it'll match pretty good. This is the tile I went with:

http://www.stone-tile.com/storage/app/uploads/public/55d/22a/63c/55d22a63c9e48557567539.jpg

It's quite a bit lighter IRL.

Every time I go by "wood" tile in the store I always thought why? But that actually looks nice! Definitely looks like quality work too.

No heated tile?

You don't need heat in a living room.

There's huge differences in "plank" tile. You can get it at Rona for ~$3.00/sq ft and it looks like absolute garbage. .99 cent pressboard laminate looks nicer.
Then there's the high end plank tile in large format with rectified edges that the tile distributors sell. You wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't hardwood, even standing on it.

rage2

I did a bit of research before choosing hardwood tile over hardwood. Over at market mall there are a couple of stores that have this installed, and I'd take my shoes off and walk barefoot in stores with tile then stores with hardwood. People must've thought I was nuts. Wouldn't have gone this route if it didn't feel like hardwood. From texture to temperatures it feels the same. The big difference in the stores was how damaged hardwood was, while the tile looked brand new. Dave pointed me to a few stores with the quality tile to choose from so luckily I didn't get a chance to see how bad the Rona tile was.

One interesting thing I noticed tonight was that the new hardwood tile floor is warmer than my old tile floor. Wonder if the subfloor is the difference. Speaking of which, my old tile looks super outdated now. Better start saving up. :(

Thanks Dave for your hard work! Excited to get this done!

i think ive got the same hardwood tile, its never felt cold and is very durable - not a nick in any plank

Nope. This is ceramic. Vinyl tile is soft on your feet and feels completely different.

Hoping it's durable, only worry is dropping hard objects on it and chipping it. Texture feels like a piece of wood, it's pretty impressive.

I am very interested in this for the main floor of my house as well, it looks great! My engineered hardwood is scratched to shit from my kids. How is the durability of this product compared to wood?

C_Dave45
01-20-2016, 12:13 PM
You could walk around on this floor with cork boots and it wouldn't make scratch. It's a full-bodied porcelain. Could put it in a car showroom.
As for breaking or chipping, you'd have to give two or three real good smacks with a hammer before it chipped or broke.

I have the same issue. 2 years and the floor has so many scratches/knicks/dents. Also with the change in humidity throughout the season this looks like a perfect replacement.

Dave what can one expect to pay per sq/ft? For a quality tile that is.

C_Dave45
01-20-2016, 01:29 PM
Finished, installed, around $20/Sq ft. Not including subfloor @ $2-4/Sq ft.

When I was in the states last year I saw them for about $100/each and you still need to tile it.

Figure $250, installed.

Yeah, always the risk when doing reno. I have the same fear in picking counter top right now. Used to looking at what I had for the last 13 years, it's going to strange to look at something different.

Well, if I'm still employed throughout 2016, may have to look at bathroom reno next. Wonder how these tiles looks in bedroom.
