Urban form and walkability study

Just because it's beyond, here's a link (http://www.ucalgary.ca/urbanlab/files/urbanlab/2015-10-23_walk21_alanizuribe_f.pdf) to a U of C Urban form and walkability study dated 2015.. None of what's in this report comes as a surprise to me but it will be food for the fodder for some people/groups.

Another study from the U of C, this one (2011 link (http://www.ucalgary.ca/urbanlab/files/urbanlab/NHood-CarTravel_29aug2011small.pdf)) found that the average speed in purely residential areas was 43.08kph..

I live in curvlinear and there's only one commercial building within a 20min walk of my house... a school.

The problem I have with this study is it is done in a complete vacuum.

Without accounting for our weather, walkability means something completely different. We're not talking about 10*C weather and a bit of rain, we're talking -40*C and a foot of snow sometimes.

My curvlinear mid-50's community has at least 42 businesses within a 20 minute walk of my home, 3 public schools, 4 or 5 private/charter schools, ODR, swimming pool, 3 churches and there's probably more that I'm forgetting.

edit: did some checking on Google and I can easily ad in another 20 businesses and more public schools, didn't realize how far I could get in 20 minutes.

This is AWESOME! We can dedicate a lane on 12th, 8th, and mcleod trail entirely to becoming an urban boulevard. We can put up barriers so the pedestrians don't feel threatened by the cyclists and install special signals so the walkers will know when to go and when to say no.
