I'll kick off February. Just came back from Maui on the weekend, some random pics:

Could have reached out and touched this one, but I'm told the fine is $20K:

Great Photos. Love the 2nd whale one.

I just got back from the Big Island yesterday myself. I still need to go through all my pics.

Thanks!

Nice, the Big Island is awesome. Did you make it up Mauna Kea and over to the Volcano? The Big Island is my favorite along with Kauai. Maui was awesome, and we mostly went to see the whales, but it's just so damn expensive "because Maui" (even before the ~1.41 exchange rate), and the nicer areas are a bit crowded for my tastes. Put up some pics when you're done going through them.

Catching whales breaching has always been a dream. I've come close with Orcas, but all the humpbacks I've seen have been fairly mellow.

I was scuba diving with a colony of Sea Lions near victoria and ended up close to a small group of Humpbacks. Couldn't see them under water, but could hear them and decided it was time to get out.

Here's a snowy owl cleaning up after a meal...they'll wash their faces in the snow, it's an interesting behavior to watch.

Headshots are not as easy as people think. I like it. Did you use two flashes on this one? Soft box?
I never know if I should use a White background or a dark one.

4 flashes :)

2 strip softboxes at the sides, gridded beauty dish above and left and a gridded flash on the backdrop. Avoiding reflections on the glasses took some experimenting.

With a fairly small investment they can be surprisingly easy. Flashes themselves are the only expensive part - light stands, umbrellas or softboxes, reflectors, etc. are all very cheap. You can even make some light modifiers yourself. It's actually pretty amazing what kind of quality you can get with a basic lighting setup.

Flashes themselves can even be really cheap if you go off brand.

I get the feeling Dave was talking more about taking a photo that doesn't look like it was done at Sears as opposed to the cost of the equipment.

Even less than that. People take their P&S digital with a popup up flash and take a picture of someone and it looks like ass. Then look at a shot like yours and say "how come mine don't look like that?", not realizing how much actually went into a shot like that.

Yup, I gathered the same. I just mentioned the cost as part of the reply. Most people are stunned by the difference a few lighting tools can make to the overall quality of the image compared to your average P&S shot like Dave describes.

Looking good Dave, just a little underexposed IMO. Open up lightroom, go to level adjustments, and drag the right side over (left) until it touches the right side of the histogram. I'm not too familar with lightroom but if you have a white point selector you can use that too on the ice and see what you get. With a lot of ice in the shot you can probably dial in +0.3EV safely in-camera, or try experiment with center-weighted metering as well. Also if your monitor isn't calibrated, it's probably super bright, and photos may look more exposed than they are (which is why the histogram is the double check).

The screen grab definitely looks better - it's a lot brighter, colors look better, and the whites pop. Nothing is blown out on my monitor. That space at the right end of the histogram is what you want to get rid of. The horizontal axis is brightness (right side highlights, left side shadows) and the graph area is how many pixels are at each brightness level. You may have already learned that from your YouTubing (way better than actual classes too, IMO).

The other thing you can try instead of using the contrast slider is negative values on the black slider (or moving the left side of the histogram to the right).

If you have a ton of similar shots, you can just apply your settings to as many shots as you want to minimize processing time. From the looks of the camera roll at the bottom, you probably have a lot of shots that can take +0.3 to +0.7 EV or more.

Most people's monitors are way too bright for photo editing, but you can always trust the histogram. Same with the rear-camera LCD - usually you need to lower brightness on those to be more accurate, since everything looks way better on a back-lit screen. Also while you're shooting, just check the histogram on a few shots and dial in a bit of positive EV compensation as needed.

You're definitely getting the hang of it.

Went for a walk today with the camera. Difficult to find anything interesting when its dry and colorless. Ended up finding some eagles and a pair of coyotes with a fresh kill, cool to watch but out of reach for a picture.

Went to the Wildlife Festival at the Agrium. Was pretty lame until they bought out the raptors.

Too dark inside for my f/5.6 though :(

That's likely the same bald eagle as in the really popular shot from last year of the baldy dragging its wingtips in the water. It was a CRC bird as well.

I was setting up lights for someone not wearing glasses, so I just let it slide.

4 lights (beauty dish, 2 stripboxes with grids, background). For the actual shot I added a foam core reflector below to get rid of neck shadows and evened the light out. Women don't tend to like a harsher light and that gritty feel

Here's one with the Zeiss 100MP from yesterday morning, shot through our condo glass. Beautiful lights seems to show up when I'm never in the mountains!
