Wonder if CTE is a factor here.

That's too bad. Mirra was an idol for me as a BMXer. Everyone was all about Tony Hawk and I had posters of Mirra lol.

Yeah, him and Nyquist and Osato were the guys that really blew me away. I didn't start riding park till I was in my 30's so watching what guys my age (or close to it in the case of Nyquist) were doing really helped!

:( This is so sad he had a wife and kids.
I really enjoyed watching him, along with everyone else, he was fucking amazing!

He was unbelievable for the stunts he pulled off. Definitely brought BMX to the next level.

Damn! You started riding park at 30? I had to switch to flatland at 25

Well to be fair I wasn't/still am not pulling backflips or super huge airs....a few spins, your standard grinds and relatively minor airs over hips and spines is about all I've got really haha

But, once I buy a place with a bigger backyard to pour an additional pad in there will be a nice dedicated half-pipe in it and some of that stuff will still come along nicely I figure!

Lots of closet BMXer's here... I remember when I used to ride for Impala bikes as a teen watching this man... I still ride at 30 lol, getting old, then you see Nyquist still riding.

Cory Nastasio and Jay Mirron should make the old timer list. Still have my Jay Mirron MacNeil frame on my shop wall lol.

RIP first man to double backflip

BMX was my life growing up. I worked a paper route and saved money for a year to buy Dave's signature model - 2001 Haro Mirra Pro:

I can't really express how chapped I am over someone I never met, but I feel like he had a profound impact on my youth. Childhood Bedroom wall poster:

What a legend.

Dammmmmn Zip, that bike was top notch back in its day... Gyro with brakes that worked, dat seat (which I ride on my 24 hrs of adrenaline bike still), killer headset, and a 3pc crank.

So shitty to hear. We are losing a lot of good ones lately. Seeing Mirra and Nyquist was why I got into BMX back in the day. I bought a Haro because of those guys, and had that same double flip poster. RIP

That's rad... I've machined a few custom parts for my BMX bikes, but owner of Macneil? That's too sick... I still have 3 of them lol

Dave Mirra pro bmx on ps1....man I loved Mirra. The shit they were pulling brought me in to bmx away from skating. Recently purchased a new bmx haha, flatland all the way

First song that popped into my head when I heard the news. I was also big into bmx growing up. Built up a retro style FBM with skyway tuff mags a few years ago. Sad. Mirra did things that would blow your mind. So much talent.

:(

Really makes me wonder what things go through a persons mind that seemingly does what they love and are outwardly successful, yet chooses such a dark path.

This recent picture of Dave Mirra really says it all to me. If you look at his face and eyes especially you can see the emptiness. He truly looks lost and depressed. It's sad that what makes extreme athletes so great can also be their Achilles's heel. The profound need to break the limits and push harder than humanly possible. When they can no longer feel this way, life feels pointless.

I avoid the TMZ/Daily Mail type sites, because they extrapolate stories out of nothing.

Dave posted that pic of himself after a hard 6AM run, with a caption discussing putting in work even when you don't feel like it. It's impossible to say how long he was depressed, and in my own search for answers, I found this to be the best written article on the situation:

This is true.

Yes I also saw the caption on that pic after the workout. I still think that what we see is more than just fatigue from a workout. I don't agree with the mantra of "It's better to burn out than to fade away." It's heartbreaking that Dave couldn't allow himself to accept the realities of aging and live out another 30-40 years with his wife and beautiful children.

Depression is something that needs to be DE-stigmitazed.

Excellent piece on Dave in NY Magazine:

Vital BMX did a great compilation of stories about Dave from his friends in the BMX Community:

ABC did a tribute in conjunction with the X-Games called "Remembering Mirra"

The 'Remembering Dave Mirra' tribute on ABC really got me. There's so much footage that I remember watching as a kid.

I remember hounding my Mom for a full-face helmet. When she asked why? "Dave Mirra has one!!" was all that mattered.

Saving my paper route money for a year, exactly $1138 to buy a 2001 Haro Mirra Pro from D LITE Cycle.

Hit me right in the feels when Daniel Dhers shares the exact same memories from his youth.

You pay the price to push your body to the limit all the time. It's no big surprise that hitting your head repeatedly will do something bad to your brain. Now we know more.
