Hi guys,

I'm wanting to get a bit more active in life, and spark up an old interest of mine: martial arts.

I was wondering if you had any suggestions on good schools in Calgary.

Note though, I am looking for something at a reasonable monthly price, nothing too crazy. I know this is a silly thing to say, but I'm considering my circumstances so I can't over spend.

I was considering the Ninpo classes at ITTA Canada, but have no idea of their rates. (I've contacted them about them).

Oh also, the reason for me to pursue this is, i want to be able to defend myself in a bad situation and get more active. I'm a pretty short guy so I can't intimidate someone away lol

Thanks for your input!

my kids just started at Elite MMA in the south. it is a pretty good class and gives them a good workout. not sure on adult classes though. the cost for my kids was $225 for 3 months, once a week.

ITTA is pretty practical and the guys are good folks. Long ago price was $160/month. Not sure about now. Go watch a class and see how you like it.

If you are into MMA then Champion Creed is hard to beat.

If you will consider boxing, Bowmont Boxing Club down in Bowness is like 50 bucks a month I believe. You won't beat a price like that.

Good school, and great kids programs. I got my black belt here, and was a student for 5+ years. Adult classes are great also.

For kids, any martial arts school initially will get them active and provide discipline, etc. So - choose a convenient one. :dunno:

In regards to Tao of peace. Is what they teach effective and realistic?

I read the website and they mention different styles... do they teach a combination of different styles altogether as one or do they teach them seperately?

i guess the most important for me is whether what they teach is effective or not. I was in karate before and they had katas and shit and just didnt' seem realistic.

I checked out ITTA and holy fuck it's expensive! 200$ per month! And you have to sign a contract for 24 months at least. Crazy! :nut: :nut:

I trained there for two years when I was younger. It's a legit school, and they also offer CQC and Firearms courses as well. IIRC Orlando Mancina trains the Canadian Military and he and his son are enlisted.

I attended this dojo for a number of years until my shoulder started to give me trouble ... a very, very good martial arts school. I have been in a number of them over the years .. different styles, etc (kung fu, judo, 3 styles of karate) but this has been the best ... with world class members (literally as per world tournament results). The teaching (the most important part even apart from style .. imho) is excellent:

David Jones is the Sensei and is a very, very good instructor and motivator etc. Other instructors are excellent there also ... pretty hard to beat imho.

And reasonable fees.

No doubt about it, their school is definitely legit. Just pricey, that's all I'm saying.

i train at Champions Creed Martial Arts (CCMA). i've been training with them since 2005 (they used to be called BDB Martial Arts), and I love it there. excellent facilities, training partners and instructors.

i'll be there for the advanced muay thai class at 5:30pm, and bjj at 7pm. if you've never done muay thai before, I suggest going to the 7pm class tonight.

please see their website for more details: http://championscreed.ca/

feel free to PM me for any questions!
