Hi guys, I am wondering about trailer hitch laws in Alberta. I heard a roomer that it was illegal to drive around with a hitch on with no trailer. Any information would be muchly appreciated on the subject!
Thanks

That is true , but with how many people do it, it can't be really enforced that much

I leave a receiver shackle in mine. It's seized in there pretty good so I can't really take it out.

Which section is it? I thought this was debunked a while ago.

It's an asshole move, but I have never seen proof that it is illegal.

True. My wife backed into a Tacoma with our Subaru. Had I been there, I would have thanked him for leaving in the ball so I didn't need to repair his truck. Our WRX I couldn't care less about.

Off topic but 'roomer'? That has to be one one best wording errors I've ever seen, thanks OP.

it is not illegal, however it is a liability if you get rear ended. insurance companies fight over that.

One of those ones that a lot of people think is illegal, but there's no law against it

My dad slid on ice and rear ended a truck with a huge hitch at ~5km/h, barely moved the truck, scraped up his hitch and did about $3000 in damage to the car, hitch pierced into the rad and some other stuff up front.

if not illegal to drive with one no trailer then it should be

i saw a guy make a parallel spot bigger by reversing in and making room by pushing the guy behind him with his toe ball

We now have:
● roomer = rumor
● toe = tow

Pure gold.

Beyond aught too half an 10 question grammer and spellin test four memburrship.

This fog-a-mirror and pulse test might have been fine for my university but we ought to be more selective.

The only reference I could find was to objects which overhang the vehicle hauling them, and that restriction in Alberta is 1.5 metres in length.

Source: www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Regs/2009_122.pdf

Even at 1.5 metres, it is not illegal, but it does require a red flag (during daytime) or red light(s) (during nighttime) for visibility.

Yes, driving with a hitch and no trailer is aloud. Actually asked a DOT guy about it once.:D

in the summer, I purposely leave mine on in case I do get rear ended. my hitch would take the brunt of the hit and the guy rear ending me would fuck his shit up.

A hitch does almost nothing to defend your vehicle from damage, but does pretty much guarantee an increase in damage to anyone who rear-ends you. It is an offensive, not defensive weapon.

if you want to look at it that way, that's fine.

I have almost no defense against someone about to rear end me. if I can cause more damage to their vehicle, great!

my hitch would definitely take a large brunt of the hit. if it bends the frame while that happens, then I get a new truck. win-win for me.

I've seen first hand where the ball hitch has eliminated damage nearly 100% on the truck during a minor hit. (aka, parking lot defence. I would install them on all 4 corners if it was practical)
