View Full Version : Bringing Out Summer Ride & Swapping Out Winter Tires...February Too Early???

With the most recent nice weather and decent weather coming up in the next couple of weeks, has anyone contemplated bringing out their summer rides?

My only concern would be all the loose gravel on the sides of the road.

Way too early

Too early for sure. My summer ride is kept off the roads specifically because of gravel, not just snow. Wait until April when all the streets are swept. I've already seen a few sweepers out so you may be in luck!

I know a bunch of people who have switched tires on their daily already. Way to early for that!

Usually I wait until gravel goes away. Lethbridge did shit all for street cleaning last spring though... well they actually didn't street clean really at all.

I'll probably be lightly driving my car when my tires show up.

The only reason I haven't put my summers back on is because I know it'll snow 48 hours later.

So glad I went with the performance winters this year. My gf's hakka 8's are all but destroyed already lol.

Been driving the RC-F quite a bit too, and the temps are still too low for PSS's. Lots of oversteer, lots of fun. Really have to take it easy on the throttle, even on clean roads there's some wicked snap oversteer if I floor it.

Is this due to the soft tire compound and dry roads?

I'll be keeping my winter tires on until April just in case we get a big spring dump.

Street cleaners were out in full force in Shawnee/Evergreen area last night

Have seen a few Lambos out, no F-cars though, Rolls and Bentleys are quite common through the winter though.

That said......way too early unless you really don't care about your windshield/paint getting destroyed.

My summer ride is also my winter ride sooo :burnout:

Having said that, it's too early for the winter -> summer tire swap for people that drive the same car year round. I've lived here long enough to know we'll probably get at least a couple more big storms before the spring arrives.

Until the night time temps stay above zero on a REGULAR basis (which might happen in March), I would hesitate at de-winterizing a vehicle any kind (summer tires, bike, convertible, etc.).

It looks to be a warm spring so lots of opportunity for early season activity, but know that there is a good chance in March/April of a sudden, wet, snow dump (so it wont stick around for long).

I thought about this and decided it was not worth to leave the studded tires on with the warm temps forecasted.... 14C this Friday.

Even if it snows in March / April, the all-seasons should be fine unless it is going to be -20 for a week straight...

I drive the Chrysler 8km to work back and forth so don't care too much about putting on all-seasons too early. I am going to leave the winters on the QX60 that the wife takes downtown daily... figured thats a good compromise.

I took my winter tires off last year first week of March because the weather was so good and it turned out to be a good decision. If the weather continues to be like this (it's been even better this year), I'll be swapping them around the same time again.

As always in this annual topic, to me it doesn't matter if it's been a particularly mild snowfall type winter, after the street cleaners do deerfoot then I think it's time to get the summer car up and going.

As for DD, always coincides when I have to re-register/insure, so end of March the summer tires go on for me.

No way in hell is the corolla coming out until the snow is completely gone and the roads are pretty close to being swept.

There aren't any left and this one is completely rust free. It's going to stay that way!

Keep in mind a recession in Alberta is going from 4.5% unemployment to 7% unemployment, which is more like "typical" employment levels in most of the 1st world as of late. Ballers gonna ball in their Lambo's. Still waiting for all the screaming car deals to materialize on kijiji, but I've seen shit so far.

Still too cold on the morning commutes for MPSS so perf winters will stay on until at least end of April. Alley is still complete skating rink as well. One thing to bring out summer toys in the middle of the day another to swap tires on the daily.

Thinking of pulling the convertible out of the garage for the wife to daily though. More fun to drive than the FJ cruiser and cheaper on gas.

Drove back and forth to Red Deer twice yesterday. Last night coming back to Edmonton was a GONG SHOW, had two people loop out in front of me and into the ditch at highway speeds (while I was towing a car and trailer) :nut:

There was one section of highway outside blackfalds, even with studded winters on the truck, that trying to accelerate up the slight incline at 70km/h you would actually slow down with the tires spinning and kicking the rear end out. Hurray 4x4

Thank god for knowing how to drive/recover on ice thanks to the winter driving course on ghost. I'm driving a loaner car this week with all seasons on, not used to that since my car has blizzaks and I may have ended up a little sideways around a corner as well. I'd say my time on the lake definitely helped recover a bit.

I totally owe thanks to Reijo and instructors for the training on Ghost. That's a sharp, tight corner with a cement barrier on one side that I didn't want to meet. My rear slid out even though I was going slow and I recovered perfectly!! One thing I discovered about my car on the ice is that the rear end loves to try to pass the front!!!
