Curious what you guys use for an aftershave lotion and how to cut down post shave irritation.

Here's my routine:

Shave my face in the shower after I shampoo my hair, this way the the facial hairs are soft. I'm using a Gillette Fusion shaver with Nivea sensitive skin shaving cream, I foam this shit up and lather all over the areas on my face to shave. My post shave is Nivea original after shave lotion - not the balm, this is the liquid stuff with alcohol in it. The problem I'm having with the Aqua Velva, Brut, Nivea aftershave lotions is the fragrance triggers my allergies, so I have to put a very small amount on. I don't know wtf is with my allergies btw, it seems as I get older i have lesser ability to handle strong fragrances.

Anyway, because I can't use too much, this leads to some crazy razor burn on my face to the point where I have small red bumps on my upper lip looking like i have herpes - which I don't btw. I looked online and Nivea makes a sensitive skin aftershave lotion, but I can't seem to find this locally.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what they use?

Thanks.

That's an aftershave balm, I can't use that.

My skin is normal to oily, so a balm causes pimples. The lotion is more suited to oily skin whereas the balm is more suited to dry skin.

Yeah i find that too with the Dove stuff, which I really like. Prob though is they only make their aftershave in a balm instead of lotion. I might just have to stick with what i have then...lame. Thanks though.

I started shaving with a double edge safety razor. Huge difference

Before when I used the cartridges I do use tea tree oil toner as an aftershave instead, seemed to help

As mentioned above, switching to a double edge safety razor will make a huge difference. Paired with some high quality shaving soap. I love Razorock soaps. Hand made in Italy.

Shave lotion is usually just to condition your beard before you apply your shaving soap or cream. For added slickness.

As for aftershave. I use Taylor of old Bond Street Sensitive Skin. ( Black Tube) It smells fantastic and my skin loves it. I have very sensitive skin and this calms it instantly.

Honestly a huge part of your irritation is using those shitty razor blades. Switch to a double edge razor. The edward Jagger De89 is a great razor for starting out. Its nice and mild and well made. I also have tried many blades and Astra blades are my favorite for a silky smooth shave with no irritation or ingrowns.

Its also important after you shave to rinse your face with freezing cold water. This closes all your pours before you are putting on any lotions or aftershaves.

Everything i mentioned above can be found at italianbarber.com or westcoastshaving.com

If you want to learn this process go onto you tube and watch a guy name Nick Shaves. He has a bunch of videos to teach you plus hundreds of product reviews.

You can try all the fantastic products in the world but if its your blades causing this you are fighting a losing battle. Also do you keep your razor in the shower? It might not be drying properly because of the humidity causing the blades to go dull or rust very quick.

Good Luck!

Get a toner instead. This one works really well on oily skin and the Tea Tree fragrance is subtle and not to girly.

If you can get away with shaving less often that might help too. When I shaved every day I had the same problems you've described, now I only shave Mon and Thurs and it feels incredible. Bonus is my mach 3 blades last 3 months before needing to be replaced, saves me some funds.

Currently using this

I find it a little too light and would probably go for a balm next time, but it might be just what you're looking for.

I used this and don't even need aftershave. Can't go back to anything else. They also have a version for sensitive skin.

Thanks for all the replies, sry haven't had a chance to reply back.

I ordered this one through Amazon:

http://www.clubmanonline.com/clubman-after-shave-lotion-6-oz.html

Supposed to be pretty good, light scent and great on the skin. Will let you all know what I think when it arrives.

Lint and Know1edge: I didn't see you guys recommendation till now - dang it. That's exactly what i'm looking for and no scent too!!! Thanks though.

I might have to ask everyone for a sample...I'm curious how these all smell haha. I don't mind a light scent, but not a strong cologne smell. Triggers my allergies.
