View Full Version : Wobbly lawnmower wheels.

The plastic rims have wear, so they wobble on the axle making the mower harder to push.

I was thinking of lathering on some heavy grease, or try to find very thin bushings. It's either that, live with it, spend $60.00 on new wheels, or get the gf to cut the lawn.

Any other ideas?

BTW- No quips about having to push the lawn mower, as my lawn is around 7000 sq ft:)

Hmm, could be a half assed excuse to get a self propelled.

ALL 4 wheels are fucked?

Go to Amazon and see what they have.

Yep, all 4. That's not too bad after weekly cuts on a 7000 sq ft lawn for the last 8 years.

Amazon's wheels are the same prices as CT.

I'm thinking the best bet is to try and find really thin bushings.

If you're a typical beyond baller, then why in the hell are you mowing your own lawn?

Because I'm a cheap ass.

Princess Auto should have something.

Find a bushing that will fit over your 'axle'. Then bore out the wheel to whatever diameter the outside of the bushing is with a drill. Glue them in place with somelike like jbweld or along those lines. Use mower for another 8 years, repeat.

I called a couple of fastener places, and they'll have the correct inside diameter bushings, but also doubt they'll be thin enough.

OK, cheapass fix for you!

Take aluminum tape and build up the wheel shaft large enough to eliminate the wobbles. Then lube the snot out of them. This should last you a season. You dont exactly cut grass in LA on a regular basis !! (super dry).

I'm tempted. Heck, I even have metal tape:)

Depending on the size of the axle, you can use either a bushing like this from Princess Auto:

It's 1/2" OD, 3/8" ID and $4.73/pair:

Or even a thin-wall copper coupler fitting like this 1/2" version from Home Depot (62 cents each):

The copper coupling just might be the perfect thickness. I'm heading over to Home Depot this morning.

Thanks!

Turns out that even the copper coupling was too thick.

I decided against the boring option for a number of reasons, but one of which was, "It's 7000 sq ft, so I'm either getting a self propelled, or pay a kid in the neighborhood to cut it" :)

Thanks for all the good suggestions none the less.

Funny note to the endeavor though... I brought in the wheel and axle to HD and while I was checking out the couplings, a young employee asked what I was trying to do. I told him and let him have a look. Now I shit you not, his suggestion was to wrap 1 layer of duct tape on the axle! That's right Rev, not even metal tape!

Irony is a bitch

I always use pop cans to make bushings for situations like this.

Great solution.

The wear seems so minimal, and that pesky lever effect comes into play.

At my shop there is a husqvarna promotion that gives you $50 for a trade in value on any lawn mower (we have some old clunkers at the shop we can use to send in the info) plus we have some smokin deals on some husqvarna AWD units that are leftovers.
