So my house is at a stage where electrical is being run and I'm trying to decide what lighting to have in the garage. I was going to go with 2 fluorescent fixtures with 4 bulbs in each.

It's a 27x25 garage so I do need some light, but is this sufficient enough or are there any other options that won't break the bank?

I'd recommend going with LED it's cheaper to run and way better light output. I went overboard in my garage I did 8 LED fixtures. I hate not having enough light in a garage while working. They also don't dim or flicker in the cold weather.

I bought a bunch of LED fixtures from costco and mounted them in my garage. They work great and are much better then a fluorescent tube light.

I am sure most people are going to recommend a LED fixture. Many advantages: more light output, no warm up time, cheap to run and long life.

Go more than that... In my 24x24 i have 24 8' fluorescent lights (12 - 2 bulb)

Bright is better. I have mine on 2 switches (outside rows and center strips) but they are all always on as daylight is the way it should be

I haven't seen those ones at Costco for awhile. Which location did you get them at?

I have 4 T8 florescent fixtures (2 bulbs per) in my 24x24. They came with original florescent T8 bulbs and I found them too dim. However I upgraded the bulbs to the Phillips LED 17W T8 Instafit LED's and they have made a world of difference.

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.led-17w--32w-t8-tled-instant-fit-daylight-5000k.1000837301.html

I found by going with the T8 fixtures + LED bulbs it's slightly cheaper than going with a LED fixture (one that runs on the LED strips).

I've got 9 fixtures in my 24x24. Each row has it's own light switch. T5 35W High output lights. It's bright going into there from outside at night, but it's very well lit.

First rule, you'll want more light than you think.

I also have 8 2tube T5HO fixtures. Flipping the switch is like turning on the sun. At night the light coming through the upper garage door windows is enough to light up the street better than the actual streetlight 10' away.

I have 3 8 foot LED tubes in my garage and there is so much light.

This sounds about what I think I going to do. I searched around and found what I think I want and LED is the way to go. I believe I'm going to do 4 fixtures with 2 bulbs each. Well see how that goes.

My only issue with the T8's is they seem to take awhile to warm up when the garage is stone cold in the winter. The T5HO seem to be better. How are the T8 LED retrofit? I've never used them?

For the size of my garage this is overkill, but I rarely need a trouble light.

If you plan on doing any work in the garage once it's complete, run wiring for at least 2 more fixtures.

This. If you work in your garage then you want tons of light. DIY auto body guys will mount lights on the walls too.

The T8 LED's are great. As long as you have an electronic ballast they act like any other LED bulb, instantly lights up.

Granted, I have a heated garage so I cant tell you what performance is like if the garage is at -10.

Ya I will have a heated garage so that won't be an issue.

Anyone have any good experience with a dedicated LED fixture or is everyone still using standard florescent fixture with LED bulbs?

This seems to be the cheapest LED fixture available at Home Depot or Lowes...

I guess I never did update this. I ended up deleting the regular bulbs and opted for 4 50" LED lights that plug in to the ceiling.

They have been great and they were super cheap but I can't remember how much.

Style depends on your ceiling height. Fixtures with a cover over the LED's helps to diffuse the light for lower ceilings , where as the fixtures with the raw leds in strips tend to be better for higher ceilings. I find the raw lights on lower ceilings tend to have a kind of spotlight effect.

Only issue I found with fluorescent is temperature. If your garage isn’t heated sometimes they’re a pain. LED is essentially not affected by temperature.

I went the splitter route a couple years ago with 2 100W equivalents in each socket. Works ok but shadows are the issue. Working on your car with the hood up and you’ll need a secondary light source.

Bought 4 3200W led bars to replace the bulbs, hoping the 4 bars will be slightly brighter and offer better coverage

I'm going to grab some of these I think. Do you know if they have any access holes on the top so they can cover up an octagon box?

Home Depot has double row 4 ft strips for around $50 and double row 8 ft fixtures for around $100. I replaced my 60 watt double HO T12s with the 8 ft fixtures and the light output is at least 50% greater than the old 120w fixtures (and instant, no humming). The price is finally right for retrofitting. Also, my high-output bulbs were $9 twelve years ago.

I converted my electrical light boxes by installing receptacles and covered the octagon box with a round cover like this:
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.4-in-round-duplex-cover.1000106235.html

Also bought the Costco shop light fixtures they have instore when there were engergy rebates. The lights do have pull strings but I just leave it in on position control it via wall switch. Two per car stall in the garage brightens the entire garage up very nicely.

I did exactly this. Took about 30 mins to rewire, needed to run more ground to make sure everything was bonded correctly, pretty simple just followed a picture

I’m really happy, 4 led bars puts out significantly more light than the 4 100w equivalent LED bulbs with splitters I had before and way less shadow zones. Going to add two more bars on the front where I work the most.

This what I ended up with after swapping in the Costco Luminous 18w led tubes. MUCH improved over fluorescent

Agreed. Only two fixtures will give you a hot spots in those areas with a considerable drop off in light for the other areas. This is the time to get it done. Better to have overkill than not enough.

How big is your garage and how many did you buy?
Let me know how it turns out. Might pull the trigger on this too.
Was thinking of getting 4 of them for a garage with 14' ceilings that's 21X24.

I believe my garage is 24x22 or something like that, I only went with two in the work bench/over the hood type area, but I can see adding two more. (Can only link 4 together) I just moved into a new house and we have a long wish list, so adding more garage lighting might not go over well with the boss. ha ha

Too bad you didnt post that earlier, I would have ordered via your link. Very impressed with the lights for $39.99. One of my boxes came damaged, but the light was perfectly fine.

One thing on the mounting, I didnt have a ton of faith in the slip-on screw mount, so I also drilled a hole in the middle of the light and screwed that directly into the ceiling.

I would expect he used a couple of these:

http://justizirrtum.info/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/light-bulb-socket-adapter-medium-base-socket-2-prong-adapter-pair-lamp-socket-adapter-home-depot.jpg

Also, for flush mounting the holes are 46.5" apart, but studs should be 48 inches apart. Coming in 3/4" from the centre of each stud sounds a bit dicey, no? I'd hate for one to fail and end up with a fixture bouncing off my car. I suppose if you're lucky then the studs run in the same direction you want the lights run.

With regards to my setup I posted with the Hykolity lights, they run on the 2-prong adapters, so you just screw those into the outlets indeed. I think you can get a 2-pack of those adapter for around $4 from Home Depot.

Also on the lights, I drilled a screw into the END of the light in the direction it slides in/ out, so it cannot physically slide "out" of position without me removing that screw! A screw drilled through the middle sounds even more solid, though!!

The setup takes less than 30 minutes. Just measure the distance twice, place your dots where you want to drill, and put the screws in. (Try to get it in a stud, that's best obviously). Then mount the light up and run your wires, tidy them up a bit, plug into the bulb socket adapters so then the lights come on with your switch on the wall! Plus you can link up to 4 lights. I needed an extension cord to reach the lights in the back, but I have 4 total.

Edit: Also, one of my lights the box was damaged, and actually the light figure inside had a small dent. I personally didn't care, BUT keep in mind you can return via Amazon and it's very very easy. (You just go into your Amazon order > return for refund > and print the label, slap it on, drop it off at Canada Post.

Here you can see when I only had two of the Hykolity lights in the Garage, and the light was only at the "back" side. So I added two additional lights, but they are only useful when my Garage door is actually closed.

Most of the LED lights if they are meant for garage use likely have a grounding prong with them. At least all the ones I have looked at do, and I had purchased the adapters to use only to realize it wasn’t possible and I did not want to risk it.

Did someone find LED shoplights without the grounding prong or is there some other modification going on?

You can go the expensive route and buy 3 prong lights, hire an electrician (or DIY), etc. but these are pretty damn awesome for dirt cheap. I've recommended them to lots of friends! (https://www.instagram.com/p/BlZPyRCFjk1Soq4Ex8DC1W-gV5G4RMtXrYvcfU0/?taken-by=jayhoang)

So on the high bay lighting, the best price I could find on 4 strip led high bays was 229 a fixture. I ended up going with the standard t5 high bay, with Led bulbs, came out to 140.00 .The lighting calc at the wholesalers had the same # of fixtures between the options. Worked out pretty good.82792

found the Costco ones cheap feeling and had a less consistent beam out of them. They (Costco ones) are useable and for the price half decent but I didn’t like them.

Thanks. I'll wait and see if the Hykolity ones come back.

I got some fluorescent plug in fixtures from Reno depot. Got them a few years ago but they were pretty heap. Grabbed a box of bulbs, and voila. I’d rather have them hard wired but we’re just renting. Put some LED bulbs into the sockets below those plug type adapter things. These fixtures have a ground prong on the plug, so the adapters above wouldn’t work. I put 3 fixtures at the front of the garage and two at the rear since I often have the door open in the summer.

I picked up a Costco power bar with LED lights built in for above the bench and I can detail in the garage no problem.

Sorry for the shitty pic I couldn’t get far enough into my house to get the shot with my phone.

Bump. Any good deals on garage lighting?
The famous Kijho ones are unavailable.

Do side wall lighting if you're actually turning wrenches. Reduce shadows and light blocked by your hood.

I installed 2 of these last week https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07H9MJR9X/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Clearly not the same as the original Hykolity units earlier in the thread.
They're ok. Not anything spectacular. Better than what I had (2 bare bulbs)
The metal is quite thin, mounting flush to the ceiling I added a screw at the end of the fixture to keep it from sliding back off the screws.
They are 3 prong plugs, so I replaced the single screw-in receptacles with a standard outlet. The outlets on the fixtures for linking are on the bottom :banghead: so you can't link them if mounting flush, AND the outlets stick out a bit, though so do the plastic end caps. I didn't try removing the plastic diffuser to make screwing them flush easier, I probably should have.
Still cheaper than Home Depot, and probably not much worse for quality.

The boss just converter my bay to led. Holy shit what a difference. Standard fluriescen before.

Easy swap. Remove ballast, direct wire one end bases clip connection on other side. Put in Led bulb. He got then from China ,(Alibiabba for $5 a bulb that is 4 feet). They are half the wattage and the bay must be like a hospital exam room now. Crazy bright.

I dunno why they don't have the nice diffused ones anymore that I have, they basically vanished or something. The Amazon Canada stuff doesn't seem to be updated / match up with their Amazon USA..
If you checkout the Amazon USA page they have way more going on: https://www.amazon.com/stores/node/16540236011?_encoding=UTF8&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=hykolity&ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_hi_web_16540236011

Checkout their 'Shop Lights' here, this is how they're promoting these 4ft ones now: https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/615EBAC8-F1A0-4F8B-840D-F9EC51EC354F?ingress=2&visitId=ed587179-6a0e-4714-89d9-51bf7afaeb1b&ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_hi_web_16540236011

The problem is I don't think any of it ships to Canada. I'm going to email them right now and ask what's going on haha..

"bay" doesn't necessarily mean mechanic workshop though...

Could also be his landlord taking advantage of the NDP energy rebates for LED swaps in his dyno shop.

I converted to these. Twice as bright half the wattage.

The ceiling only has 1 of 2 layers on in this pic.

Got all the white panels up on the garage walls. Replaced 1/2 the 4' light tubes with 4' LED tubes. You can see the difference in the pics. Paneling the ceiling remains. Still waiting on 8 x 8' LED tubes to arrive.
