Autocross season is here! No mention of it anywhere else, so here it is! (Been in the sharing mood lately, some of these snippets were copy and pasted from Calgary Sports Car Club (CSCC) and Southern Alberta Solosport Club (SASC) forums. If not ok, let me know...)

I. Memberships and Registration

I'd highly recommend getting a membership with one of the affiliated clubs. Membership will usually pay for itself in as little as 2 events, and it makes the season a lot cheaper per event. Pricing structure may differ for each club.

Registration link for SASC membership is in my signature! Or click here (https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/southern-alberta-solosport-club-sasc-membership-499774#.VxU7kPkrKUk).
For SASC events and registration, click here (https://www.motorsportreg.com/orgs/southern-alberta-solosport-club). (CSCC event registration TBA when available.)

SASC Event Registration/Pricing Structure as of April 2016

In an effort to promote club membership as well as pre-payment of entry fees via Motorsportreg (in order to avoid the handling of cash on site) there will be a new fee structure for this season for SASC events held at Fort Macleod.

$30 - Members of the SASC or an affiliated club* & Prepaid online via Motorsportreg
$40 - Members of the SASC or an affiliated club* & Paid in cash on site
$40 - Non-Members & Prepaid online via Motorsportreg
$50 - Non-Members & Paid in cash on site

*An affiliated club is defined as any WCMA sanctioned club i.e. SASC, CSCC, NASCC etc.

Also of note is that we will strictly enforce the checking of valid membership status during the morning on site registration at each event to ensure that those paying a discounted entry fee are in fact members of the SASC or an affiliated club.

CSCC Event Registration/Pricing Structure as of April 2016

This year it looks like we have an even split of championship events between Fort Macleod and Westerner Park. The events held at Westerner Park will be $40 for CSCC and affiliated club members, and $60 for non-members. Registration will opened to members in advance of general registration. For all Westerner Park events proof of club membership will be required to be shown at registration on the day of the event. For registration procedures for the Fort Macleod events please refer to the SASC forums.

II. Locations:

SASC events are held at Fort Macleod Airport, CSCC events are held at Westerner Park in Red Deer.

Westerner Park - 4847A 19 St, Red Deer, AB T4R 2N7
Fort Macleod Airport (49.7059° N, 113.4220° W)

How many events do members typically attend?

I'm looking to get into AutoX this year but I'm a complete beginner. I'm out of town for the April 23/24 events.

Which dates would you recommend me attend? Any of the 'Practice' ones?

Just get to as many events as you are able. Only way to learn.

If your not competing then the practice days are better. You'll get more runs in the day. Everyone is super friendly so even just come and ask questions to figure it out.

That's not really true. The number of runs is determined by the number of entrants. If more people sign up for the practise day, then they will get fewer runs.

There really isn't any difference between the practise days and the competition days, other than the practise days don't apply toward the annual prizes.

reijo

Yeah, Murray is right. Usually you get about the same number of runs each day.

Note that autox is also a great introduction to motorsports without spending a bundle (run what ya brung!) nor risking life, limb and car.

In fact I would strongly recommend doing some autocrosses first before going on a big track in order to learn some driving skills first in a competition environment (believe me, this is NOT like driving on the street). Better to make mistakes at lower speeds first and the skills transfer over.

And there is going to be a novice school Saturday ... no extra cost! How can you go wrong? :)

Novice school and practice (yes, 2 full courses will be laid out!) this Saturday and first championship event this Sat./Sun in Fort Macleod April 23/24, 2016.

Register here:

http://www.motorsportreg.com/orgs/southern-alberta-solosport-club

By the way, we run rain or shine! Lots to learn on wet pavement! :) Note that it is typically about 30% drier down south so even if rain is forecast, unfortunately, you will more than likely be driving on dry pavement most of the day. 'Tis the nature of the beast!

See you there!

A +1 that I would love to come try an event one day, had to miss the novice school on sat otherwise i would be been there for sure ( was a weekend full of things that I had to bail on for one reason or another =/ ).

Besides i have my lovely free entry coupon from the winter school to use up this summer.

So at this point just sign up for any event?

I believe that the free entry coupon would only be good for the Fort Macleod events. Other than that I would recommend trying it out and getting addicted ASAP.

Was a good day yesterday despite the light drizzle almost all day. Managed fastest PAX car on non RE71R tires and second fastest PAX RWD after Murray. Damn FWD guys walked away from us in the wet :P

Good driving! If you had better tires, you would have easily beaten me. But neither of us were going to touch those little FWD cars; they were even beating us in raw time.

No kidding! I got 16 runs and I sat out most of the fun runs. I think a couple drivers managed over 20 runs. This was a SERIOUS seat time event!

Next event is a WCMA regional so I would expect it to be a bit busier. It is on July 3 at Westerner Park. Registration link is below:

Thanks for the results! My Civic was #41 pretty happy with it.

I always say it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. And, if I had a fast car I would have to drive it slow out of fear of breaking it :). I have no illusions about the focus, I know it's crappy but it's my crappy focus and I like it.

I didn't see you there for the afternoon runs - hopefully nothing bad happened! Are you coming out again for the July 3 event? You managed some pretty quick times in your civic!

Wow those RE-71Rs wear out fast! I felt really stupid when those came out, watching the big improvements in time everybody was seeing with them but now I understand I can't afford to run them anyway. They remind me of the rivals that I foolishly put on the front a year ago. I think I got 7 events out of those tires and I was ripping chunks out down into the carcass at that point. I even added 2.5 degrees of negative camber to try to get tire wear under control.

Do you think with your tires being so worn it will slow you down at all on July 3? You know, I'm just wondering.... ;)

I have used both tires extensively. The Star Specs make more noise on the highway than the RE71Rs, and it is a much more annoying noise (whine).

However, they feel much better for autox, with a crisper turn-in response than any other street tire.

Joe-G
06-27-2016, 08:40 AM
Never had the Star Specs, so I cant comment on them... but the ZII is horrible on the highway. Even my NT01 is better...

Zach has also had the ZII(* spec I believe?), and his opinion is somewhat similar to mine regarding their harshness/loud road noise.

The local YYC events are very nice, but to be honest, they aren't youer best bang for the buck. Westerner or Fort Macleod events are where you get your money's worth -- amazing number of runs and still some serious competition.

Murray is right ... not many reqistered for Red Deer on Saturday ... so that might be a good option to burn off some rubber.

Also the last events of the year for Fort Macleod are now open for registration:

Registration is open for October 1/2 on MSReg.com

October 1: Fort Macleod Appreciation Day (not an official competition and we will be giving locals rides in our cars, BBQ, etc. etc. should be a fun day!).

Oct. 2: Final CSCC/SASC Championship event of the year.
