you got OWNED. sorry to hear about you problems but neither of them are your friend.
As for the 29 days, is that the period they are holding it? you could call your local station and see what the deal is. they will explain it to you.

OUCH! id say to prevent this from happening again, be careful about lending out your car, no matter how well u know your friend.

Freind went through this. The car is locked up and stored for the full time.

Unfortunately, this is the case. If I were you, I'd get both of those 'friends' of yours to arrange/pay for a rental car for you, for the remainder of the 29 days.

I know someone who had 2 ferraris seized for racing. AFAIK, they were supposed to be impounded for a month, but he got them back through his lawyer in a few days.

Maybe check with Poiints for some advice? Won't hurt, since their consultation is free.

i know this is a few days old, but i found this on the alberta registries site

Vehicle Seizures

If a person is caught driving a vehicle while their operator's licence is suspended, the vehicle will be seized and impounded for 30 days, regardless of who owns the vehicle. Towing and storage charges (as much as $400) are the responsibility of the vehicle owner. An appeal for early release to the Driver Control Board costs $100 for a paper hearing and $200 for an in-person hearing. A hearing does not guarantee an early release.

Applications for hearings can be obtained at any registry agent office.

a friend of mine racked up my old integra... I feel your pain, I was OWNED

however, I took my 'buddies' jeep until everything was sorted out... still paying out the ass for insurance though!

...and my 'buddy' is my pal no longer...

Since you are going to be forced to pay the storage fees, spend the same amount of money NOW on a lawyer and get it out asap. You won't be saving anything, but you won't be out a truck for a month.
