What does a guy get for a good bike lock these days? I remember the big U shaped ones but I'm guessing those are outdated now.

How does one secure a bike that has removable wheels?

Is a helmet mandatory?

When is it okay/not okay to ride on a sidewalk? How about for kids?

Can I google all of this? probably, but want a Calgary best practice so I don't look retarded.

I clearly haven't done any serious cycling in 20 years and bought a bike last night.

U shaped are generally still the best, but they vary greatly in terms of protection. You'll have to do your own analysis for cost/weight/performance for your needs. Get one that's as small as you can get away with (for locking your frame to a secure object/rack) as oversized U's provide more room for leverage based attacks.

Get a cable to go with your U lock to secure quick release wheels.

Helmet mandatory for those under the age of 18, but recommended regardless.

Only children under 14 can ride on sidewalks.

Remember red means green and ride like you're driving in mainland China minus the horn.

Kryptonite makes some beefy locks... But think they specialize in motorcycle protection...

Kids are fine on sidewalks, adults technically should be on roads and pathways... But in reality sidewalks are fair game in the burbs... And if you are riding super slow you can almost get away with it downtown... But please don't

U lock with cable works well.

I use a thick magnum cable lock, then pull off the front wheel and lock it to the back and frame when necessary.

Another option to secure the wheels are locking skewers.

They do both. They have different ratings of locks depending on what you are using it for.

If you want to get a Kryptonite lock, Chain Reaction has the best prices from what I've seen.

I've only ever known Kryptonite for their bicycle locks.

I use a Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 (https://www.amazon.ca/Kryptonite-Kryptolok-Standard-Bicycle-FlexFrame/dp/B005YPK8G2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462374109&sr=8-1&keywords=kryptolok+2) with cable that I purchased for $40 on sale from Amazon. It's a very popular combo based on what I see where I lock my bike. Use the cable like this to secure your front wheel, and the U lock to secure the back wheel and frame.

There's definitely more robust locks out there, but I only ever lock my (inexpensive) bike in a secure parkade during the day, so I don't need the best protection - your needs may vary.

If you have a quick release on your seatpost, don't forget to secure it. :banghead: Either replace the collar with one that bolts, or run the cable through the back of the seat.
