View Full Version : Help us choose a middle name for our daughter.

My wife is due with our first in November and it's going to be a girl. We are having a tough time figuring out a middle name for her. Her first name is going to be Harper. We have it narrowed down to 3 options so go ahead and vote for the one you think sounds best. They all have some meaning to our family. If you have any other suggestions for middle names go ahead and post them.

Check the initials with your last name to avoid anything weird. My rule has always been to use names nobody is going to misspell, so Mae is out. Grace sounds more religious, and to me Rose sounds more British. If any of those are names of rich living relatives, use that one, can't help when inheritance time rolls around.

Like them all, chose one. Good luck and congratulations.

Why not "Steph... anie"?

The amount of porn stars with "mae" in their name would rule that one out for me. Also make sure the full initials don't spell anything she might get teased about throughout school. The other two seem fine to me. Just IMHO of course.

people always comment about the initials, i didn't really consider this when naming my son, he's 13 now in grade 8, his initials are BJS, I've asked him and he said its not something he's teased about... and he's not exactly the most popular kid.

I joked with my husband when I was pregnant that if the baby were a boy, the initials would be JDM.

D has meaning for my family and M is our last name... He didn't find much humor in what I was proposing.
We ended up having a girl and we didn't do a middle name for her.

I personally like Mae the best of the 3, but I have a niece and one of her middles names is Mae so I'm biased.

Something gender neutral so that if, in a few years she starts self identifying as a he, then you can simply drop the first name and start using the middle one.

So.....

I'd have to know the family name otherwise, you end up like my old neighbour Harold Butts. Yes he went by Harry to friends and I've no idea of his middle name, it never came up.

Girls get feminine names, nothing feminine about the name Harper. I can see a kid bugging her by saying "I'd like to play that Harp", etc. Kids can be cruel and can twist anything into a cruel joke.

Rose, Mae and Grace... I'll go out on a limb and assume it will be a family name from the Asian side of things. Hard to fault a name like Grace in any case.

Mitsu3000gt

I have to agree wit the above comment that all the names in fact sound like porn star names haha. Harper also reminds me of Stephen Harper. Not that my opinion matters one shred toward naming someone else's child, but the more I see it I am really not a fan of the name.

Because of all the helpful responses.

To be honest middle names aren't terribly important to anybody else, do what you want. Very few people know my middle name and I rarely use it, but I like it since its been passed down through the guys in my family. The odd dutch spelling is useful since my other two names are so common.

I have never met someone with no middle name, but then I make up for some others as I have 2 middle names.

If my mother used both my middle names when addressing me, I knew I was in trouble.

This is complete bullshit. At some point in time in your life, especially while young, your middle name WILL be required in some way, shape, or form. And if it is weird...

My middle name is Ernest, not exactly a crazy middle name (my father's name), but the ridicule I received for that would blow your mind, all the way up to around grade 6 IIRC.

Kids are the f*&king worst, no need to make your's an easier target.

I don't have a middle name and 2/3 of my kids don't have one either. I know a lot of people that don't have a middle name either. I've never come across a situation where I required one :dunno:
But, yes I guess if you have one and a form or something requires you to fill it in or have it published then you're required to provide it and can't leave it out if it's one you don't like?

I will join the crowd who things that Harper is a the very last name I would pick for a daughter. If you were having a boy, would you name him Jessica or Britney...if you answer is no, then that is the reason I wouldn't name my daughter Harper.

I did vote however, and I think Rose is the one that matches Harper the most, in my opinion at least.

These names also come to mind: Sue-Anne, Mary-Jean, Jerry-Anne, Mary-Joy.

Outside from the obvious SH reference, Harper just strikes me as an "odd" name. It doesn't sound particularly nice to me. I'd scratch the whole idea personally.

Can't beleive the middle one is losing, it rolls off the tongue far better than the other two (which both suffer from having the same drawn-out syllable at the end).

Haha yes, a great start to life is teaching your kids the power of doubling down on a bad idea.

Your name is your first impression. It is incredibly important, and studies have shown it most certainly has an effect on an individual throughout their lives. It is a difficult decision, and rather than being a sheeple and doing the "different" thing everyone else is doing, the OP should grow the hell up and not treat their kid like a dog. :nut:

Fuck, might as well just call the kid "kid" if it doesn't matter, what's in a name amirie?

This. There's a reason my wife and I never told anyone the names we were thinking of before either child was born. Someone will always have an issue with it. If you like the name - other opinions don't matter.

Why? My middle name is rarely required, really only for legal or government ID. Hell even my first passport somehow didn't have my middle name on it.

Kids will only make fun of you if you let them. My first name is Richard, you know how many times people have tried to call me Dick? I honestly didn't care and if you didn't react kids immediately forgot about it.

I think its super weird not having a middle name. Mind you my parents kind of dicked me around when they gave me three of them. One is fine and it helps identify you.

I also don't understand the hate for "Harper". I really like that name, I think its classy and feminine. By the time she is grown up none of her peers will relate it to Stephen Harper so I don't understand the reference.

Harper Grace was my choice. It seems like your standard run of the mill pretty girls name.

What's with this "no middle name" bs anyways..is that some new "trend" ? Out of the three you've picked, Harper Mae sounds the nicest to me. Harper just reminds me of a naggy woman who will be "harping" about this and that. Or a musical instrument. An annoying one at that.

Harper Rose = forest lawn

Harper Grace = chinese piano lessons

Harper Mae - kind of country but OK

Surprised to her how many people think that middle names are important, I haven't used mine in all of my life as long as I known, and haven't seen any of my friends use theirs....they all say they don't have one? Learn something new every day, who would have thought people put so much importance into them.

What's more surprising, is I have a middle name that I never use, in good old Russia your middle name is your dad's first name, or at least I think that's how it works, it is so for all members of my family. I haven't seen anyone use a middle name at all...I feel like I have been living in an alternate universe based on what I learned on beyond from this thread haha.

As an example, my dad's name is Alex...so my middle name is "Alexandrovich" ...my mom's middle name is "Dmitrievna" as her dad's name was Dmitri. In Russia the last names change based on the gender, as do the middle names, so if my mom had a brother, his middle name would actually be "Dmitrivich"....very weird.

Besides our ex-PM which is an horrible image for a girl, the other famous Harper for me is Harper Lee - author of "To Kill a Mockingbird".

So it does have a southern ring to it.

And by the time she goes to school, Stephen Harper should be a distance memory. I don't see anyone will be making fun of that name.

My cousins name is Finnigan...Finnigan. I don't know his middle name but I can't be any more wierd than the first name.

Also, I am of the crowd that Harper is also wierd and shouldn't be a name at all for anyone. It sounds to me like some sort of bug. So I chose nothing. Change all the names. Fuck, change my name too, it sucks.
