Family operation that does excellent work, they re-did our roof after the insurance company's first choice botched the job. They even cleaned up after the first company, cleaned the gutters, magnet swept the grass for nails, took away the left over garbage from the first re-roof. The re-did the skylights to, looked a hundred times better on the inside fitment.

Derek is your brother? Cool. Big 5 did my house last year.

Good job and good follow up service. Plus one for big 5.

Hey glad to hear it :)

I used to hang eaves/soffit with my old man back when I was 15/16/17. My little brother Allen and older brother Derek run the show now. :)

I used Meerkat Roofing and the were awesome. They came back 4 years later and fixed a piece of trim that had come off in a wind storm, no charge or hassle.

So here's what I find interesting, I contacted both companies last Sunday, received call backs on Monday from both saying I would have a quote within a couple days but here's a week later and nothing...

I'm surprised with the lack of contact, perhaps the job is too small for them to quote?

A beyonder has at least reached out to me via PM and hopefully we can get this going

I had contacted 3 companies and all 3 gave me a printed itemized quote on the spot. Ended up going with A-Clark roofing and couldn't be happier.

I'm having the same issue for drywalling. Promised a quote and haven't heard back, I guess the trades aren't hurting for work these days?

What I learned is you can pester a lot of these guys enough to come and actually do the work for you, but they tend to do lower quality work, for more money, and are not very prompt.

My advice is when this happens, don't get upset... just move onto somebody who is more enthusiastic about doing the job.

One of the companies I contacted, the person who called me actually lives in my community

Considering one of the companies is Cam's brothers' it's odd I find

Wait, Derek didn't get back to you? If so I'll give him a call and give him a kick in the ass. :)

Nope, called me June 6, said I would hear back within a couple days. I asked him if he needed me to be there and he said no

Anyways, I don't go after people for quotes, I just move on to the next company

I contacted all 3 companies listed above (Meerkat, Big5, and ExteriorPirates). Got quotes from all 3. ExteriorPirates were the quickest to respond, then Big5, and I just got Meerkat's quote in my e-mail today. Contacted all 3 via their website.

For my application:

Meerkat is the most expensive and least detailed. Have line items saying this and that will be extra if they encounter it, but didn't include some of the simple things the other 2 caught right away.

Exterior Pirates responded quickly and had me a quote next day (or maybe 2 days later). Have provided 2 follow-up calls to ensure that any questions I might have about the quote are answered (first one I had got the e-mail but not looked at it yet, so they gave a second). Chatted with the GF who was home when they came by and she told me that night she liked them. Really polite, nice people, etc... Also happens to be the cheapest quote of the 3 for me.

Big5 took a bit longer, but I do believe I got a call back to say they would get to me closer to the end of the week and I was fine with that. Quote came in a bit higher then Exterior Pirates, but not as high as Meerkat. Both Big5 and Exterior Pirates had very detailed quotes, and caught the same couple of things (like adding roof vents to the garage).

I would be comfortable going with either Exterior Pirates or Big5. We will probably end up going with Exterior Pirates as the experience my GF had with them boosts them up a bit more (and happy wife happy life).

YMMV but this is what my experience has been.

Bump for an old thread. I have a call in to Big five this morning to get them to investigate a small leak I have around my skylight. It only leaks when we have major storms, so I may have time for additional quotes. Any other companies suggested? Does Legacy have a good reputation (aside from their boss's reputation on these forums, which I know.)

I have a small leak my roof (I think), that showed up in the storm last night. I'll call Big5 to see if they can come look at mine, too

Had a chat with big five and the "roofing specialist" who they said would call me back never did. I'll call the pirates if I get serious.

I'm just going to slap some caulk or something on that spot and pray for a massive hailstorm later this summer to destroy the rest of the roof. I get zero leakage for light or moderate rain. Even during serious downpours I get a tiny amount. I can roll the dice with that for the season.

Between the truck and this roof, I'm hoping for absolutely catastrophic hail this year!

Yeah, never did hear from Big 5, but don't need them now. Did some spot repairs with some roofing tar and I think that'll hold me for several more years.

I contacted Big5 about a small siding job.

Never heard back. I guess they're too busy.

I haven't had any issues with Big5 at all communicating with me. Always prompt on the reply. How are you all contacting them that you're having issues? Email? Phone? Web? I found that leaving them a message is by far the quickest way and I'm super happy with the service I've received from them. So much so that I brought them back to do my new house. New Roof, trim, eaves, tin work around doors etc.

I phoned, spoke to someone, and they suggested that thier "roofing specialist" would get back to me later that day via phone to arrange a time they could come and take a look at my roof.
I never got a call back.

I'm not mad or anything. If I really gave a shit, I'd call them again, but at this point I've done the repairs myself.

I assume most good small companies are quite busy. I'm not offended.

Quoting an old post I know but we had meerkat do ours as well and we were very impressed.

It's been two years now and I have found a total of 3 nails, that's it. They were very clean, quick and responded quickly to the questions I had.

If you can believe it they were also 50% under what National Star roofing quoted us. I have a feeling national was swamped or something and didn't have time so they way over quoted but still!!

Bumping an old thread but does anyone pay out of pocket for a roof anymore or does everyone just wait for the next hail storm?

Also, when to know when you need a new roof?? Mines looking a little sad..

Most insurers pay only a prorated amount for damaged roofs, so unless its very new, you'll pay most of the cost even with a valid claim.

I can’t imagine having a claim on your record would be good either. Insurance companies aren’t in the business of losing money.

I paid out of pocket for mine

Depends on your policy. Our house and garage roofs (15 y/o) got hailed out two years ago, insurance replaced it and all we paid was the deductible.

How much is everyone paying for a roof replacement? Im guessing an average 2000sqft home is around $12000 with asphalt shingles?

So far my quotes on our 1100 sq.ft low pitch bungelow are around $6g, so I imagine it'll be around there, if not slightly more for a 2-story

I'm assuming that is just to single over what is on the roof? Or RE sheet and shingle?

Yup, just removal and replacement of shingle (hopefully).

$6g +tax

That cost seems very reasonable. Any idea on cost if they needed to re sheet? My roof is pretty soft in some places. Imagine I only have a few years left before the whole roof will need to be looked at.
