View Full Version : What's the market like for an '81 Camaro with 10k kms?

A bit of a barn find in the family (I think someone just forgot about this thing). Gf's aunt has an '81 Chevy Camaro Z28 (Canadian spec) with the 350ci V8, final year of production of 2nd gen and being Canadian spec it doesn't have all the emissions crap that the US '81s were installed with. Car is single owner (well, 2 owners, mom and daughter) and was parked in '87 in covered garage with only 10,200kms on the odometer.

Pulled the car out last month, flushed all fluids, gas tank looked pristine, no rust, battery, starter, tires, brakes replaced. Thing fired right up and drives great, which is insane for sitting 30 years. Car looks damn good, looks like it time travelled from the 80's. Still have the original purchase agreement and tons of documentation too.

Is there any demand for these cars? They weren't super powerful thanks to the whole energy crisis, but do people care about low mileage original owner cars like this? I see sites have valuation has it at $12k for excellent and $16k for concours condition. Seeing if next to no mileage would command more money or not.

Is it 10k or 110k? I had one of those for years and the speedo wraps back around to zero at 100k. I think there is a market for sure, but I don't think it is insane. Personally I would sit on it for another 10 years or so and it can only go up...

10,200kms. No odo wrap around, it's genuinely that low mileage.

Graham_am wants it ;)

Personally, I'd say you've gone too far already... people who want barn finds want them still covered in dust, flat spotted tires, 30yr old oil and all...

eBay it - market it to the Americans - they'll be the one paying a good price at the moment anyway.

Does it have an 8-track? Seriously.

I'd think it would be at the top of that price range, being that it is unmolested and the original buyer. Sell it on Bringatrailer.com, all those US$$ would make for a good deal.

Wow, now that's a barn find. I'd be shocked if you couldn't get at least 14-16 K for it. I'd scoop it up for myself personally. That car deserves to be driven.

Its worth more than that I reckon. I'd hold onto it for another 5 years though, once 3rd gens hit "peak pricing", 2nd gens will skyrocket.

That thing is amazing. I bet you could get $20k to the right seller!

Where is the nicest trailer park in Calgary?

They're not the most desirable generation, but I think it would be valuable to the right buyer. Low kms and originality will definitely increase value, some guys get really horny about that. The tricky thing will be finding a collector/enthusiast.

Take it to an appraiser. You will likely not get full appraised price, but its a place to start.

I had a white 79 back in highschool (early 90's...). I always wanted to buy another. Manual transmission?

Agreed. Yes, these were not the most powerful cars in the world. But really, at this point all modern muscle cars would blow the old ones out of the water. It isn't about speed... it is about nostalgia and the hobby.

I think that's a 20k car as well. Perhaps noticeably more, even. Pristine, and mileage is almost unheard of. It just might take a while to sell it due to it's niche nature, but somebody somewhere would want it for that price... nearly certain.

What a find.

I'd trade my wife's unmolested '08 WRX for it, no idea what either are worth.

Crazy. I'd have an appraisal done on that thing. I'd hold on to it for a little while just to find out the actual value. That's crazy low mileage

Yes that's sweet. If it's the 4sp manual with 350 it's worth much more to American buyers.

Also because beyond, LS swap it.

I used to blare that from my '86 Trans Am like it was my job. Now I grew up and blare it just as obnoxiously as before in whatever I'm driving lol.

Should've offered $8888.

Tough sale locally given the economic downturn, nobody is really buying toys right now... well aside from Flipstah and TwinCamTurbo

The weaker CAD dollar and stronger US economy can probably get you at least 20K or maybe even a bit more over the border though.

Actually I don't think 30K is out of the question now that I looked at the picture more closely. Just don't drive it any further, haha.
Yea, definitely not selling locally. The car isn't even in Calgary. Was just helping them get a sense of what the car is worth to the right buyer, and helping them sell it later this summer.

I'm thinking you could get 20+ for it. Put the car on bringatrailer and get that in USD

Hey Rage, you'll probably get some great selling leads via a Camaro forum. Something like this:

http://camaroforums.com/forum/

Now I want to watch that Voyager episode with the Camaro that B'Elanna pronounces Kam-er-oh. lol

Damn. I never find any really good stuff. The best thing I've found was a $50.00 bill under some landscaping ties at Canadian Tire:cry:

 Would also be interested. I have a 3rd gen (car that has been kept in the family) but would like to buy 1 of every gen just for the hell of it.

And that one is only a 305 with 4x the mileage...so rage's example should be worth at least 4x that!
