my family bought the cheap Nakiska family pass for this upcoming season. hopefully get some good use out of it this winter. not the greatest hill but for a 5 and 6 year old, its good enough.

I think I'm gonna try it. for 700 you can't go wrong.

If you can get out mostly midweek, the Norquay 90 pass is an amazing deal, and a much better mountain than Nakiska.

yeah, no midweek for this guy. :(

problem with Norquay is that it is farther, and you have to buy a park pass.

we bought the family pass for $599. if we go 4 times, it will have paid for itself. my wife is very happy that we can just head out there for a 3-4 hours, have some fun and leave without feeling like we needed to get our full day in.

Yeah, a pass can take the stress off the day. 100% agree.

For the extra 20 minutes distance, I'd do Nakiska, but that's just me.

Hopefully doesn't end up like the disastrous RCR takeovers in recent memory. Would be a shame to have them do something stupid like shut down the whistler park as per RCR's seemingly insane protocol. That or start charging an extra fee per day to use the park. :nut:

Sounds like they're going to add W/B to their EPIC Pass, for the 17/18 season. Which is exactly that for the current advertised value.

I imagine they'll put quite the pricing lift on it, when they add W/B though.

I'm hoping to get out most weekends this season. I don't think I skiied more than 10 days last year due to the conditions and lack of friends who wanted to go out.

Whistler is fucked for sure now. It already had unbearable lines and was expensive, but expect Vail Resorts to double the lift ticket price within a few years. They do this everywhere.

Adding it to the Epic Pass offers little benefit to Canadians, but it will mean a huge influx of bros from Colorado, Tahoe, and Utah, who can now go there for free as much as they want.

For anyone with kids, how young did you start them?

My daughter is turning 3 in Sept, and I am thinking about putting her in lessons this winter.

Was it a waste of time and money, and you wish you waited? Or was it just what your kid needed and haven't stopped since?

SOAB
08-26-2016, 11:47 AM
I think you have to judge their physical build. if their legs are strong enough to push out and do the pizza, etc.

my daughter first started when she was 4. she's 6 now and just started doing green runs at the end of last winter.

googe
08-26-2016, 11:29 PM
From what many ski instructors have told me, it totally depends on the kid, but 5ish is about what you want to shoot for. Some kids do great earlier, but it's like rolling a dice. Combination of fear, coordination, and ability/attention span to observe and learn from an instructor. It's more about that than the physical aspect. 3 does sound a little young, but it's not unheard of.

I started when I was 2, was "racing" by 4. Its never too early IMO. Look at the Nancy Green program, its pretty awesome.

I have read conflicting reports on the no park fees thing. I bought a park pass back in march and it expires in March of 2018. When I asked the person at the counter she said its only free to people who buy a yearly pass. (I paid for 1 year and get 1 free) and it sounded like regular day users who buy a single day pass still needed to pay. Then I read later day passes are free. Better of just getting a seasons pass before the end of 2016, and you won't have to pay for a park pass until late 2018.

I'd love to get some new gear this year. The guys at Fresh told me prices were gonna ski rocket this year so I should buy last spring. I bought some new outer gear, but not from fresh as they didn't have what I was looking for.

I would like to get a new touring set this year, but I don't know if I can justify the cost.

Managed to find a new, never used Burton Audex Link jacket that came out in 2006/2007.
I've hunted for this jacket for years on eBay.

Also picked up a bigger & wider board from The Source's August summer sale.
I'm going from a 154cm camber to a 162cm wide hybrid.

All I need now are a new set of winter tires.

Why on earth would you want a wide board if you could ride a 154 before?

Yup booked, I'll be on the hill Jan 30th through until Feb 5th.

I start in Otaru and do 2 days in Kirroro, then to Niseko for 2 days, then Rusutsu for 2 days then back to Sapporo for a day off then home.

Its quick but I get in some great skiing and lots of diversity.

That's hilarious.

The Plaza is where we premiered two of our movies, so I can appreciate that venue. Nostalgic, with theatre seating. Post movie boozing & socializing will happen elsewhere.

I imagine tons of gear will be tossed at Flames Central, and boozing afterwards, on a school night.

All the resorts were busy because Thur and Fridays had the most snow days IIRC. People were trying to make the best of a shitty, short season with the lack of snowfall and higher than normal temperatures.

You can bet with the low Canadian dollar and no entrance fees for all National parks in 2017 itll be a shit show from January onward. I will not be looking forward to skiing weekends at Louise which coincidentally, are my days off this winter.

$100 lift tix sucks but be glad we have these amazing places to ride all within a 2 hour drive. I got buddies in edmonton that love to ride but its a 10 hour round trip:thumbsdow so they barely do it.

$74 for opening day is a joke but it will be packed still.

No but had a bunch of buddies go last year who had a blast! Also I'm obsessed with UK dance music so am pretty excited to see a lot of the acts released so far!

Any word what the Costco price is?

Sunshine is $80/each after tax, and you have to purchase it as a 3 pack.
Louise is a 2 pack at $150 for the pair

Anybody been to Sunshine yet? Looks like they have quite a bit open, but wanted to see if anyone has had first hand experience their yet this year.
