Description :

A Testimonial of Owning a 1993 Mitsubishi GTO

If you’ve got the time for a testimonial, read on….

I originally purchased the car in the fall of 2008 – it was legal to import and was being prepared to ship over to Canada. My interest in the 3S platform grew out of the love I developed for an early 90’s Dodge Stealth ES. It was white, sleek, and fast – or so I thought for the naivity of a 16 year-old. In time, I sold the Stealth because I knew that there was so much more to the 3S platform that needed to be experienced.

My father and I drove up to Edmonton in the early spring of 2009 to receive the car from JDM Connection’s holding facility. William patiently scanned the auction houses day after day for months until this particular car came along. It came from Japan with approximately 63,000km and was given an auction grade 4. That day Dad and I picked it up is one of the dearest memories I have. It was rainy and cold, but the Danube blue pearl paint was still colder and sharper than even the bitter Edmontonian weather. I remember grinning ear to ear as I watched the facility manager pull the car up to the fence so I could receive it. I also think this was a special moment because it gave tangible, real evidence to my dad that there were people on the internet who could be trusted – in this case, an importing company who was both reputable and trustworthy.

I drove the car back to Saskatchewan where its new home – far, far away from anything and anywhere it was once familiar – awaited. I had a small stable set up in my dad’s shop where he stored his semis. Indeed, this new breed was rare and not fully understood amidst a shop of American Iron. However, that did not dissuade its new owner. I quickly began modifications that would lead the car and I on a long and arduous road of building, tuning, and a genuine love for Japanese automobiles. Before the car was even safetied, I had swapped out the stock suspension for Tein Flex coilovers and EDFC controller. Basic maintenance was completed and the car was safetied shortly thereafter.

Snippets of documentation and the bulk of the data collected on an excel file give evidence for the years of modification and upgrading that followed thereafter. Presented before you is what can be described as an evolution in the life of this particular Mitsubishi GTO. Indeed, both this car and myself have had our share of ups and downs in our eight and a half years together – many of these complications a result of my own oversight and fervor. However, this GTO has certainly earned its right to a stable next to the mighty American Iron of our Fathers.

The modifications were taken to the next level when, in 2012, I cracked a ring-land on one of the pistons of the original engine. I was forced to pull the motor and begin a rebuild that would take this Mitsubishi down another unfamiliar path. I had recently purchased a set of Billet DR650 turbos from Dynamic Racing out of the US. Because the piston sent shrapnel throughout the motor, I had the turbos rebuilt, the heads torn down and refinished, and essentially underwent a full long-block rebuild. In addition, I purchased a USDM ECU from a fellow 3Si member, as I believe that my JDM ECU was part of the cause for the excessive stress to the motor. Though it is well documented that the JDM ECU is not appropriate for our octane levels, I overlooked it and paid a hefty price.

I purchased the short block from a fellow member of 3Si.org. He upgraded all of the components to forged internals. I installed a much larger Setrab oil cooler to deal with excess heat and upgraded the hydraulic lifters to the ’99 Big Bore style lifters. In addition, all 120K maintenance was performed (including oil pump, water pump, timing belt, pulleys, etc.), and the seals were changed in both the engine and drivetrain (the rear main has a slight leak since the install. At the time, I purchased the seal by itself and installed it that way; in hindsight, I realized that the housing with the pre-seated seal could be purchased. Thus, I picked said piece up and it will be sold with the car).

I reassembled the car and received help and support from so many friends and fellow enthusiasts along the way. There were a few kinks that followed, however. By the following year, I had to replace the CAS (crank angle sensor) and was having wiring issues with the oil pressure sensor and gauge. Nevertheless, the GTO made its way back to its prairie roaming grounds.

The following years have led us on multiple excursions - with a certain grace and ease - through the dry, prairie plains to the once familiar, humid and oceanic air of Vancouver Island (approximately 5000km round-trip). Yet again, it tasted the spindrifted air of the Pacific Ocean and was reminded of its home in Japan – a taste though familiar and sweet, now a memoire of the past. Indeed, this car has been far more than a tool for getting to and from a number of locations. Rather, the Spirit of the Japanese automobile thoroughly saturates this GTO in a most raw and pure form. I trust that whomever owned this particular Mitsubishi in its home country would see it now and rest assured knowing that it was passed on to someone with an equally zealous enthusiasm, care, and passion for the platform. Perhaps I was a tad ambitious – maybe even impatient - at times to help thrust this platform onward. But it is my hope that whoever decides to carry on this torch does so with a similar zeal and sentiment for the 3S Platform.

Weaknesses:
Rear CV Shafts need changing. I had purchased two CV shafts that were lost in transit and have not searched again.
Though the paint is original and still in excellent condition, the front end has rock-chips and some wear.
Bomex lip received blow on highway resulting in several inch crack on the bottom, right side.
Two rock chips in windshield – they did not spider, however.
Clutch pedal is significantly heavier than most vehicles.
Check Engine light and SRS light are on.
There is an oil leak coming from rear main area, likely due to improperly seated seal. Has not affected driving and loses approximately .75L/5000km
Keeping up with regular maintenance is vital for upkeep, though can be demanding at times.

Stengths:
The GTO is a rare and powerful machine.
The engine produces in excess of 450whp and approximately the same 450ft/lbs of torque or greater on wastegate pressure (1.1 – 1.2 BAR; Turbos are capable of 2 BAR), and has the capacity for much, much more. However, the boost controller remains off 99% of the time.

(These numbers are correlative for comparable mod list on 3Si forums - http://www.3si.org/forum/f142/new-turbo-billet-dr650s-508115/ & http://www.3si.org/forum/f1/1st-test-dr650-billets-509888/)

Overall, the car is in excellent condition and receives detailing continuously.
The GTO is always stored for winter and started throughout to ensure proper running condition.
There has been no expense spared on this car in the 8+ years that I have owned it.
I have trusted it on a number of long-distance road trips and it has not failed me (5000 km+).
The car has been running extremely well for the last two years and has not been showing any signs of issues.

If seriously interested, please contact Riley @ 1-306-37one-zero355. Texting will likely not take you very far - calling is a sign of a more earnest interest.

Starting Price: $22,500

The car is located in the Salmon Arm, B.C. area and can be viewed there; I can arrange to connect with a potential buyer, if necessary, outside of Salmon arm.

Thanks for your consideration, but I am not interested in trades.
My wife and I will be leaving the country for some time and thus will not need a vehicle here (also for sale will be my 1993 Subaru WRX for a significantly reduced price).
Reason for selling: Beyond this upcoming trip, I have been considering selling the GTO for over a year now as life has been pulling me in other directions. However, because it is precious to me, I have no intention of dumping it for cheap (think of a father in anticipation of an appropriate dowry for his daughter, gentlemen ;) ). Because I have not spared expense with this car, I will not part with it without ample reason. In addition, I anticipate that the potential owner would also be of an enthusiastic and mature pedigree. This is not a starter car and not for the faint of heart.

** I have a brand new OEM 99 Wing that I would be willing to sell alongside the car. I am asking $1300 for it because the wing is no longer in production, is brand new in the box, and was approximately that price CAD new.
