View Full Version : Ugliest car you've owned

Let's see them - in your opinion, the ugliest car you've ever owned. For me it was my first car, something that my Dad located and bought and then resold to me all out of good willed intentions. I remember coming back to the small prairie hamlet to pick up my 'new to me' car and my heart dropping when I saw what I was going to be driving. It sure as hell was no chick magnet and was about as ugly as ugly could get in a car to me.

But over the next few years, I came to terms with it's ugliness and came to love this car for it's quirkiness and how tough it was. The thing went off road in places that no 2 wheel RWD car was probably ever meant to be and it always got me home with nary a problem - a Jimmy probably would've suited my adventures better but the "Big D" as I nicknamed it proved it's self time and time again in scenarios where it just should have not been.

I do not currently have any digital copies of old pictures but I will try to scan a picture from the Idaho where some random gas station attendant is filling my car while casually smoking a cigarette - how times have changed. Anyhow, a couple pics from the web - this is pretty much an exact copy of what I had...

It may be ugly, but my old Mazda 323 taught me about basic car setup, over/understeer, how to be fast around corners, and was a bit of a shocker in the 90's era street racing scene. I would routinely outcorner sports cars in this thing because I had learned how to drive it at the absolute limit.

I also was able to cram 9 passengers in this thing on a trip to Banff and back. So many amazing memories in this thing haha.

Learnt how to drive in one of these then inherited it, so ugly but also the most reliable car our family owned, 20 years and ~350k kms until we gave it away to the Kidney Foundation. The 4WD taught me a lot, my dad was always raving about how amazing it was not to have to come to a stop to engage the 4WD after coming from years of Land Rovers/Cruisers in SE Asia.

Miss that car though. In HS we crammed 8 people in it a few times, that little 1.5L was bulletproof as hell.

This was a 1985 1.3L Ford Laser. I believe that (atleast in New Zealand) the Mazda 323 looked exactly the same.
Inherited this from my grand parents in 1999. It had only done 40k. Had beige vinyl seats and a cassette player.

Sweet 323... unfortunately hot hatches of the era all got too close to that boxy dodge omni look. But like you say, they were basically race car trainer aids where you learned to be flat out all the time and make time up where you could.

I have too many hideous cars to pick just one as ugliest. From early 80s RWD Toyota van that apparently terrified some friends for life with corners on 2 wheels (so verified by guys losing to said van) , early 80s base model Ford Escort, etc... my early motoring years definitely lacked any and all visual appeal.

While I never owned that car, I drove it a lot while doing deliveries for my parent's photofinishing wholesale business. Like many of the cars I drove back in the day, it eventually failed with a transmission failure. :D

1986 Chrysler Lebaron GTS

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/SHOracer14/2012-08-22_19-13-34_124.jpg

Had the red interior to match the exterior, no A/C, no power locks, and no power windows.

Not the prettiest thing out there but the notch back held a bunch of stuff and the 2.2 Turbo was quite peppy for its time (probably the only thing I liked about that car).

Yep was it the auto? We had the 5 spd but I remember hearing how much of a PITA it was to change the clutch on it from the Viet mechanic, many FOB swears I heard there whenever my dad and I went to pick it up

I think after that Tercel, my next ugliest car was a Stanza, which I called the Costanza.

I don't consider any of them ugly but if I had to pick I guess then the 350Z or C350. Mind you though, like I said, I do not consider them ugly by any means. Especially my 350Z which was decently modded. lol

77 E250 van...

Blue and rust with Heart shaped sex window, luxurious green shag carpet...

I still see it around on occasion... By the time I was done with it - it had a divorced NP205, F250 front axle and was riding on 32" BFG ATs. Which made it half ass cool, but it was still one ugly f*ing van.

1978 Ford Ltd. This land yacht was mine for a few months while I was in between cars that I actually wanted. It rode like a dream but you couldn't see anything you ran over, which doesn't matter cuz you probably didn't feel it. The doors felt to be about 7' long and the exhaust was dollar bills.

Had a 1978 Plymouth Volare 4 door sedan exactly like this

http://classiccarsmark.com/images/full/1979-plymouth-volare-4-door-sedan-3-speed-automatic-1.jpg

Gutless 318 and the biggest turd I ever owned. Note the rust on the rear rocker-I had the same issue. Big enough to lose a traffic pylon out of (ask me how I know).
Did a road side starter change on it, swapped in a 360 (dropped it on the trans cooler lines while dropping it in-oh and the 360 had a rod knock), cracked the radiator and had to stop every ½ hour to add water. Too cheap to add coolant at the rate it leaked it so I just ran water until it froze one night and cracked the block.

I had a 1989 blue Ford Taurus with the clear peeling off. It had the 3L V6 though and the fuel pump would cavitate with anything less than 1/4 tank when it was hotter than 25 outside. Amazing when it would putter and stall turning left at a light.

EDIT: never mind. You're older than me, graduated with my brother(s).

Actually, I didn't have it during hs. No way my parents would help me out with something like a car, so I didn't buy it will I was... 21? Something like that.

Funny.... I didn't realize right away the speedo was in miles. Wondered why 100 on the highway felt so unstable...

Cool car, but that color does remind me a bit of newborn baby poo... takes a while for their digestive systems to develop as it were...

I had a red 85' Coupe GT back in the mid 90's, great car. Few exist now and those that do are generally heaps. They are certainly not ugly IMO.

Had this same comment. Is it actually in baby-poo yellow? If so, I'd say it's a little ugly, even though I think those corvettes are pretty cool.

The official name is War Bonnet Yellow, and it's more of a mustard/gold. Period correct (and the original colour) for the car and its year.

I have to admit the first time I saw it in a picture I was turned off. That being said it has grown on me a lot, and it stands out in person, my wife still hates it though lol.

My first car was a hand-me-down 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon ...

It was NOT clean like the attached picture... The paint and especially the fake wood-paneling whatever-you-call it was all oxidized, and it looked like crap. So very, very ugly. And it went through oil like crazy.

That would be such a cool car to own now.

Owned a 1986 Mitsubishi Sigma when I was in NZ back in university. What a shitbox. Don't have pics of it handy, but here's a couple I found.

Well this would be in my top 5, but I had an '88 Honda Accord EX-I sedan with 245,000 km that I purchased years ago for $100. Interior was great but the rust was pretty terminal and poorly repaired by the prior owner. A former co-worker's nephew just bought a new truck that day and just wanted it gone - hence the price. Mechanically, it was flawless. I bought for the sole purpose of teaching my girlfriend (now wife) how to drive stick with it. She affectionately named it "Spot" and it stuck.

We owned it for over 8 years and it was our spare car whenever one of ours was ever in the shop. We used it to haul things to the dump or to transport anything we didn't want to dirty our regular transportation with. We drove to BC, the US and the Northwest Territories without any problems. I changed the oil twice annually and gave it a tune up every 2 years.. other than that... No other maintenance. The alternator went once and I replaced the brakes three times in all the years I owned it. I abused this car and it took all the punishment and went about its business. The windshield and sunroof leaked whenever it rained, and the trunk and frame rusted from the inside out as water would get trapped and you could hear water swishing around in random spots throughout the car a couple days after each downpour. It was a shitbox beater of the first order.

The RCMP pulled me over and promptly told me it wasn't roadworthy - recertify it with a safety within 90 days or take it off the road for good. By that point it had over 450,000 km, third was slipping, the oil light flickered randomly and the suspension was shot. I sold it for parts for $475. Spot was without question one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned.
